[edit] Rename
There is a suggestion by User:Baldrick90 to rename this to Wikipedia:WikiProject Friesland. This sounds sensible to me, and I would have used this name, except for the proposals to call it Frisians. What do people think about renaming? Once the project has a few contributors, we can make a template for users, and one for articles. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 19:52, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Move back
I don't see why it should be Friesland, which is generally associated with the Dutch province, which is by the way officially called Fryslân. The flag also suggests that it deals with this province. However, when I proposed this project, I had all the Frisians in mind, including the North and East Frisians. I truly believe "Frisians" would be a better name. It should cover the entire history of the Frisian people, their languages, literatures, lands, everything. At best, Wikiproject Fryslân could be a subproject of Frisians. --Benne ['bɛnə] (talk) 21:42, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think we can have more than one project on the topic, there are not enough editors to go around. The Frisians project should be redirecting to the Friesland project. The reason for Friesland is that is the name in English, and this is the English wikipedia. Fryslân is not in English.
- Are there any articles that would miss out because of the project being called Friesland? I cann't see that the scope has to be any different. Graeme Bartlett 20:19, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Friesland generally refers to Fryslân, whereas the scope of this project should in my opinion include East Frisia and the North Frisians as well. Therefore, I believe Frisian would be more appropriate. --Benne ['bɛnə] (talk) 13:18, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- I have to say it might be best to leave it the way it is. I'd like to place a few comments. Firstly it is true the province is officially called Fryslân, I believe since 1997. However you must admit that everyone in and outside the province still uses the name Friesland. The article on Friesland is also called Friesland and not Fryslân. Consistency on Wikipedia is very important. Therefore I believe we should not move the page, but instead broaden its reach. My proposal is to redirect searches such as "WikiProject Fryslân/Frisian/Frisians etc here. I also want to change the first line. "Welcome to the Frisian WikiProject. We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Frisian people, the Frisian language, Friesland and any other place of Frisian settlement as well as Frisian history and culture." I reckon might do. Any comments? Baldrick90 20:57, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- Your proposed opening paragraph sounds good, please put it in. Is there any better proposal for the pictorial symbol, apart from the waterlily flag? Graeme Bartlett 21:20, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Friesland should be Fryslan! It is our great province's only rightful name and will and shall officially be called that way. So I request a move-back right now! Thanks in advanche, the one and only: -The Bold Guy- (talk) 16:44, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] A new member (who planned setting this up for a long time)
I am a true Frisian, a proud inhabitant of Fryslan who could not be more proud with the blood flowing through his veins! I shall help this project for all eternity, whenever I have time, this I solenly swear! You have yourself a new member and this member shall try to do his best improving all articles concerning Frisia and Fryslans inhabitants the Frisians! I shall help you with history related articles! My interests goes mainly for Pier Gerlofs Donia and associated articles, for Pier Geerlofs Donia is my ancestor! I am most delighted to see you finally created the article and I will most certainly try to do my best in order to help improve all it's associated articles' quality! -The Bold Guy- (talk) 16:51, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- Welcome! It's great you joined up. There are many ways of contributing: 1 The project definitely needs more support, if you could find more people it'd be great. 2 I have created the assessment table and rated almost 100 articles but there is still a lot of work to be done. 3 Categorisation of Friesland articles. 4 Creating lists of requested articles/open tasks 5 Creating and enhancing articles 6 create a list of literature on Friesland etc etc. It's also great you like Grutte Pier so much. It would be great if you could improve the article to a good quality standard. Baldrick90 (talk) 19:27, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

- It sounds like fun, this project. I'd love to be a participant all the way up from the beginning. I think Fryslan deserves to have its own project, and I think many people would like to share the same opinion with me! I should say; look at this, tell every Frisian wikipedian that you know, and give this proposal some notice on this great site! Many great Frisians throughout ancient history all the way up to modern times, need to have recognision on wikipedia. People such as Grutte Pier, Ygo Gales Galama, the Galama-family, the Schieringers and Vetkopers, Tierck Hiddes de Vries, and much, much more! Today is the day! Now is the time for us Frisians to combine and create our long-rewaited project! We are standing at the start of something new, something great; Fryslan boppe!
Murlock 09:57, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps there's enough information for Fryslân to deserve its own project, but I thought it would be nice to combine information about all the Frisians, also in Germany.
- Frisians! Absolutely, now doubt about that! And I am very proud of being a member and starter al the way up from the beginning! Your idea is great, Benne, it sure is! Frisians! Our own project! A great thing. I'll be happy to help. Allways, -)-(-H- (|-|) -O-)-(- 13:03, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, a month has passed after your last comments; is there anything going to happen? Is anyone going to create this project? Frisians, when is your project gonna be started up! Or is this just empty talking and no acting? I'd like to see some action taken here, okay! Otherwise, I don't think there will be any project for Frisians. At all. And that would be a bloody shame, since the Frisians are a great people who deserve to have there own group of organised editors, taking care of there historical, culteral, and etnical-related articles. 84.87.138.105 08:35, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I would love to volunteer in a project like this. I am of Frisian ancestry myself, and the idea of such a project to be formed sounds really interesting to me! You guys really have my blessing for this; I would love to be a part of it and help you whenever help is requested! -The Bold Guy- (talk) 17:48, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
- I have created a project page Wikipedia:WikiProject Frisians, so anyone is welcome to sign up. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 03:13, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for adding this. Can someone please ask the people who put their names here as "interetsed wikipedians" if they're willing to sign up as a member now the project has been created? That would be a fine way to get us some more members for Fryslan project. Thanks in advanche,

[edit] Wijerd Gerlofs Donia
I just made this article on Pier Gerlofs Donia's nephew. Just to make you people aware of what I did. Can anyone help me with the article? Is there perhaps some more information known about mr. Wijard? Thank in advanche,

[edit] Can I join?
Can I join you people? What should I do before I can join? 86.89.146.118 (talk) 13:44, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- You can join up by signing up in the members section. Firstly it would be good to register so that you have permanent identity. And then helping to improve the articles, or create the missing ones. What are skills and interests in relation to Friesland? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 20:59, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cool project!
I decided to join you because I thought "Frisian people" and "Frisian empire" aswell as "Fryslan", sounded really cool. Other than that. your national hero Pier Gerlofs Donia seems to be quite a cool guy. The story of his lifetime seems to lend itself perfectly for an adventure story of some kind! And, last but not least, I am "Fries" myself. Never knew Fries translated to "Frisian"! Cool stuff, really! Angela from the Blue (talk) 11:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] rename attempt
the Bold Guy attempted to change all of the occurrences of Friesland to Fryslan. I think we should be using the English language name for the area in the English Wikipedia. Nearly all the links that were changed went red! Let's have a discussion before renaming the project again. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:02, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
The Friesland-project should be moved to the name Fryslan project, for the name Fryslan is our great provinces officially recognised name. We should use it more often, how else do you think we can get it "ingeburgerd"? Please man, we gotta use the name Fryslan for the project. We gotta use the name "Fryslan" more often or it will die out. -The Bold Guy- (talk) 11:12, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rename to WikiProject Frisia
Because Category:Frisia contains articles dealing with all of the Frisian regions, and Category:Friesland only those related to the Netherlands province of Fryslân, and since Friesland is about the same province, I believe the name of this project should be changed to WikiProject Frisia. --Benne ['bɛnə] (talk) 12:22, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- How about I put in a redirect? I think it would be difficult to rename all the templates that are already in place. Also I expect that the Friesland subset will have most of the articles. There has already been an attempt to call it project Fryslan, and it was project Frisians in the past. It would be better if there was a bit of stability. It seems that there as many opinions for the name as there are participants! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 01:36, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
I would go for the name of either Fryslan or Frisia, but Frisia is the more internationally recognised name and Fryslan merely the name of a province in west-Frisian language while Friesland is just the Dutch name. I approve with the use of the name Frisia rather then to use the name Friesland. 86.89.146.118 (talk) 08:18, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Participant back on board
- Hello -The Bold Guy-, it is good to have a participant back in the project. I have mad a whole heap of articles in the last few weeks on history, see: User:Graeme Bartlett/Frisian pages for a list, just a few more red links to resolve. I would appreciate if you could check out the Dutch and English versions to see if the translations I put up are good or not. Do you want to resusitate your talk page as it redirects to your user page? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:10, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, I am back under my IP adress. Under -The Bold Guy-, I'm still unable to edit. Because User:Chrislk02 banned my account, and when not logged-in, I can't make any articles. I can only expand articles others have made. Can you perhaps try to make aware Chris at his talk page that I am a valuable member to the project? I would love to edit again but right now, I cannot. I would love to return, but I probably can't before some of my fellow Frisians make aware the admins that -The Bold Guy- is a good user. I was hoping maybe you could see whether you can help me so that I can edit once again under my account name. 86.89.146.118 (talk) 14:12, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- The trouble was angela from the blue who came from your same IP address. Can there be an explanation for this IP number. Is this a school IP number shared by many, or an ISP running PAT? Otherwise you will have to wait till 9 May for the block to expire. Any way you can still look at the articles I have been making on the Kings and counts and potestaats of Frisia. Magnus Forteman deserves more attention - perhaps a WP:DYK Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:14, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
