[edit] European lions
It has been suggested that Lions in Europe be merged into European lion. I quote from Talk:European lion: I agree to fusion this article with "Lions in Europe", because of the fact that the european population of lions isn't widely accept as a separate subspecies."
- I agree, but lions could also be a page that discusses the presence of the Asiatic lion and the European cave lion in Europe. Maybe even the lions in the Roman arenas. Peter Maas 10:24, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- European lions are also discussed in Asiatic lion#Asiatic Lions in Europe
[edit] Portal
Isn't it better to rename this page into Portal:Extinction?
- Well, not in my opinion. Why? Because a WikiProject and a Portal are wto different things. In short: a wikiproject is to coordinate and organize article writing, and a portal is to help readers and/or editors manoeuvre their way through Wikipedia topic areas through pages similar to the Main Page. In essence, portals are useful entry-points to Wikipedia content. Peter Maas 07:41, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- However, I do agree that we should create an Extinction Portal, besides this project. I will start one at: Portal:Extinction. Peter Maas 07:41, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Editing the portal
The portal has been started. Now we have to edit it! Everyone feel free to do so. All help is needed. You can look at other portals as an example, like the Portal:Biology. And look here: Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions. Any suggestions for featured article and image? Peter Maas 08:15, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 23:36, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, I just added the Extinction Portal to the directory. I think eventually we will create the departments you suggested. Might indeed be helpfull. Peter Maas 08:31, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wildlife Barnstar
There is currently a barnstar proposal at Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals/New Proposals#Wildlife Barnstar for a barnstar which would be available for use for this project. Please feel free to visit the page and make any comments you see fit. Badbilltucker 15:38, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Topic:Paleontology
Hello at Wikiversity there is a disipline in development on palaeontology that needs help. The courses could help with te development of articles on wikipedia so it is a long term program. Interested people can go to this URL: http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Topic:Paleontology#Content_summary Thanks for reading Enlil Ninlil 03:02, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Endangered species
According to the above article:
- It has also been noted that the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act itself, which coined the term "endangered species", has been questioned by business advocacy groups and their publications, but is nevertheless widely recognized as an effective recovery tool by wildlife scientists who work with the species. To date only 16 species have been delisted and recovered.
The sentence sounds dubious to me. I'm pretty sure that the term endangered species preceeded the act. Indeed, I suspect the 1963 Red List probably included that category and CITES obviously had the word endangered species as well and was conceived around the same time as the act. However as my knowledge in the area is limited could someone confirm this is true and if so, remove the inaccurate claim that the term was coined by the above act. It might also be an idea to re-word the sentence as it's US centric Nil Einne 12:08, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
I was surprised by that sentence too but didn't look closer.. however I've done some research now.. the act passed its first legislation in 1966 (according to wikipedia)..
Searching Google books for:
- "Endangered Species" date:1000-1899
Comes up with 56 references.
The oldest appears to be from 1777:
Public Papers of Governor by New York (State). Governor - 1777 Page 1891
But the papers aren't that public it seems and there is "No preview available"
Another comes from the "Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria - (Melbourne, Royal Society of Victoria) published 1889 which mentions Litoria spenceri as an endangered species. [1]
So it seems clear the US ESA didn't invent the term, although it may have popularised it in the US. —Pengo 04:34, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Local extinction
I've started an article on local extinction as it was poorly addressed in the extinction article. The contents are very rough right now, and if anyone would like to make the article their own they are most welcome. —Pengo 04:15, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Renaming
I would like to suggest to rename this project into Wikiproject:Extinct and Endangered Species. What do you think? --Melly42 18:38, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not in favour to that, because its range would be too large. Besides it would than not include pages like Extinction and Local extinction. However, I would support a different Wikiproject on Endangered Species (if it doesn't exist already), but not the two combined. And you could also say that 'Endangered Species' fall under 'Extinction'. Someone else also an opinion? Peter Maas\talk 12:53, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
- Melly42, what are you arguments for renaming this project? Maybe I need just convincing... Peter Maas\talk 13:06, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
- Well, a different Wikiproject was my first idea too. But, why it would be make the range too large? We have a lot of endangered species which were not seen in years but are still considered as extant (especially newly discovered species), we have Extinct in the wild species, and we have lazarus taxa (i.e. rediscovered species). I think in that case it is rather difficult to separate the subjects. --Melly42 (talk) 13:37, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Project Banner
I have recently created a banner for Wikipedia:WikiProject Biology which has assessment parameters. I notice that your existing banner does not. Given the amount of overlap in the biology sector, and the concerns expressed elsewhere about the proliferation of project banners, I was wondering whether the members of this project would be interested in perhaps utilizing the Biology banner, with a "drop down tab" for this project, perhaps similar to the {{WPMILHIST}} banner. Doing so would permit for individual assessment for each project, as that is something the Military History banner does, while at the same time reducing the amount of banner "clutter" on talk pages. If you would be interested in such an arrangement, please let me know and I will work to revise the Biology banner to include the "drop-down" tab and make the other arrangements required for your project, as well as theirs, to have assessment data available. Thank you. John Carter 20:59, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm leaning into being in favour! What are the opinions of the others? Peter Maas\talk 13:05, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
- Although now I found the following on another "drop-down": See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Snail . Peter Maas\talk 21:36, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
{{WikiProjectBannerShell|1= {{WikiProject Gastropods|class=B|importance=High|nested=yes}} {{WikiProject Extinction|class=B|importance=Low|nested=yes}} }}
[edit] "Extinctions in dependent territories of European countries" section
I have found in the article List of extinct animals of Europe the following section Extinctions in dependent territories of European countries. This is using a purely political term on a biological matter. As if it really matters what contemporary political situation an area has in terms of what extict animals there are in that area. I had assumed that we were using the word Europe from a geographical point of view. We could also remove Cyprus fossil residents from the list as Cyprus is not European geographically or perhaps the best bet would be to create a new article called List of extinct animals of Eurasia. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Francisco Valverde (talk • contribs) 19:01, 7 May 2007 (UTC).
- I would futher propse the use of geographical and gelogical terms versus political or sociological terms and therefore propose either the deletion of the whole article or the renaming and expansion to List of extinct animals in Eurasia, letting the possibility of new articles titled List of extinct animals of the Americas, List of extinct animals of Africa and List of extinct animals of Antartica. See definition of Eurasia in the article of Eurasia. --Francisco Valverde 19:18, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Peer-review of Evolution
Hi everybody, comments and suggestions on this core topic are welcome. Wikipedia:Peer review/Evolution/archive1. Thank you. TimVickers 22:35, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Palaeontology
Considering this page is about this topic, all my concerns will come to this page. So does anyone know anything about the American palaeontologist Roland T. Bird? Thankyou Enlil Ninlil 19:17, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Evolution FAC
Hi there, I've nominated Evolution as a featured article candidate, the discussion page is here. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated. TimVickers 15:41, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Chalicotherium...
...is in need of some looking at. I did what I could with the animal ;-) Expert knowledge either in mammal paleontology or wiki format is sorely needed. Thanks in advance. Dracontes 14:54, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Dinosaurs
Is this project focused on dinosaurs or recently extinct and before, or is it left for WikiProject Dinosaurs.
- Well this project is focussed on all extinction-related topics, thus including dinosaurs. However the sisterproject Dinosaurs takes on that part for the most. It depends on the participants: some are more focused on recently extinct species, while other more on prehistoric ones. Peter Maas\talk 13:00, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
