Template thoughts
I'd like to make Modern Events a subhead of History rather than a level 2 heading.Lou I

I'd also make a suggestion about references at the bottom of the article. This is riskier since it deviates from what has become almost a norm for Wikipedia. I'd create a structure that looks like:
- Level 2 - References
- The See articles: references to other 'pedia articles just goes at this level as text.
-
- Level 3 - Further reading
- Level 3 - External links
What do you think? Lou I 18:12, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- I think that would merit a project of its own. You are proposing reworking something that has become pretty standard. I wouldn't want to mix that issue with the "Ethnic Groups" issue. -- Jmabel 22:52, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Choice of Target
I like much of what you've done with the formatting and content for this sample of the use of an Ethnic Groups Template. I just wish the sample for using the template used an easier target. I feel compelled to comment but don't necessarily have a better suggestion. My concern is that the Pequot are not what I would consider an ethnic group. This area of confusion is one that clutters the whole concept of ethnicity. From my perspective, the ethnic group would be Eastern Woodlands Algonquian Indians. We might even create a further sub-group for Coastal Eastern Woodlands Algonquian Indians with some minor differences in culture or economics. Our modern view of these tribes is based on their organization at the time of greatest historic contact with Europeans, filtered by current U.S. government recognition rules. But, separating the Pequot, Mohican, Narragansett, etc. this way makes little sense. It is as if one tried to define Pennsylvanian, New Jerseyite, and Marylander as different ethnic groups.
To recap, I like the idea of a sample for a template, and much of the work you've done in creating this one. If you could suggest a better target, I'll try to construct another sample. While really difficult politically, we could try Kurds. But I'd really like to try it with a less politically sensitive subject. It may be a couple of weeks before I can address this, so I'd welcome other suggestions for a target ethnic group. Lou I 18:12, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- I'm working on Basque as my next example. Quoting from Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic Groups:
-
- "This project construes the term 'ethnic group' in its broadest sense. There may be identifiable ethnic (sub)-groups within an ethnic group (such as the Ashkenazi within the Jews). Any templates we adopt have to allow for a way to talk about that. Often, ethnicities border on being nationalities, such as the native 'First Nations' of the Americas, or are heavily identified with a particular nation, such as the Ethnic Germans."
- My intent over the next week or two (depending how much time I have) is to try to come up with at least five very diverse examples. If anyone else wants to help on that, wonderful! -- Jmabel 22:52, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)
