[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 20:41, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project banner

I noticed that this project doesn't have a banner to place on the talk pages of articles. I hope that this one would provide at least the basis for one which might be used. Thank you for all of your work to date, and best of luck in the future. Badbilltucker 16:57, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:38, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Intro

I have just joined this project. Would like to hear from the other editors from this project. Gondola 10:43, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pictures

I have located so far 2 sites that have public domain pictures of cheese: http://toutunfromage.canalblog.com/archives/2005/06/19/501346.html Albums Photos located on the right side of the page are photos taken by Emmanuel Gault who has granted permission to me to use them in the Wikipedia as long as his url is listed as the source. http://www.jonsullivan.com/DiaryDetail.php?pg=1679&mat=ddef All the photos are this site are labelled Public Domain, and several of this photographer's photos have been used already in Wikipedia's cheese articles. [edit] Update

In a hopes to keep the members of this project going, I have completely updated the main page as-well-as created many subpages for organizations. You will find a user banner now for you to tag your user pages with as well as a link to the old tagging banner which I will update for rating soon. --Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 19:53, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article assessment

This project now has the ability to assess the articles that its tag has been placed on. Please visit the main page and click under the assessment graph for recommendations on how to properly assess articles if you are unfamiliar with the process.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 18:59, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Is there something I need to do in order for my assessments to show up on the bot-generated assessment page?--Gondola 06:40, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
They will show up within a day or two when the bot makes its rounds. Sometimes it is down for a few days, but you should see them soon.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 06:51, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Stub Class Parameters

I dutifully checked the parameters for stub class per Christopher's suggestion, and I am still not able to see why the Bleu de Bresse article is considered stub class and not start class. Therefore, I am not able to raise it to start class from stub class because I do not know what I need to do to cause that to happen as the article in question in its present stage seems to fulfill the parameters listed under start class, or am just being dense? Gondola 14:03, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I raised it based upon the fact there are multiple headings, a picture and "internal" links. It really isn't that huge of a deal. To get it to a B level the article does need substantial work in the way of history, local significance of the cheese, citations and references, etc.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 18:28, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
I appreciate your efforts to organize the development of articles; such an approach will lead to a nicely growing collection of improved articles. I just needed to ensure that I understood the listed parameters which I will follow--no problem. As I live in the French Rhone-Alps region, I would very much like to take advantage of that fact--in terms of taking original photos of not only of cheeses which I eat on a daily basis, but also perhaps production facilities, etc. We'll see. I would like to assess the article on Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage, classing it as a stub, but I can't figure out how to do that yet!!! Can you please walk me through that process? EDIT: I figured out how to do it finally! I did not leave a comment at the discussion page since my reason is listed under history. Gondola 11:41, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
The link for the guidelines is here. If you are looking for the actual tag, the tag should look like this when you put it on the discussion pages of articles {{WP Cheeses|class=XXX|importance=XXX}} with the XXX being replaced by the proper ranking for importance and class. I hope that was what you were referring to. When ratting, also think of importance "in the realm of cheese", not just people in general. So if it is an AOC and well known as you stated on one summary which popped up on my watch list, then you would be good with Mid. If it is an obscure cheese that is only known in on "region" of France then it would be Low. Cheese rated as High are more generic and would likely be found mentioned in a print encyclopedia or are just central to the cheese industry over all, such as Blue cheese, Cheddar cheese, Brie, etc. Where as Cheese or Cheese making would be Top.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 20:17, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ways to Contribute

Under the heading of Ways to Contribute (on the project page), it is stated that trivia sections in articles should be removed. Is trivia the same as Miscellaneous (please refer to Bleu de Bresse article)?--Gondola 06:56, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Well what many people have been doing is creating sections instead that are titled "In popular culture." Although this alleviates the title of "Trivia" it can still be trivia just with a different heading as you have noted. Sometimes the comment is worthy enough to be written into a paragraph, but quite honestly, this instance is not noteworthy under Wikipedia:Notability in the least bit.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 07:02, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
How about if I remove the Miscellaneous section from the Bleu de Bresse article and add it as an internal link?--Gondola 07:46, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I'd vote to just remove it completely as it has no real context as it was just a cheese he was looking to buy in the shop. We might as well link everytime the word cheese is mentioned on any tv show to the cheese article if we do that.--Chef Christopher Allen Tanner, CCC 07:58, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I removed the Miscellaneous reference to Python's Cheese Sketch, because I agree with your reasoning (though the reason why many people I know went out of their way to find and eat Bleu de Bresse was because of the publicity that famous Python sketch gave it!)--Gondola 08:15, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] For consideration

Regarding Casu marzu, articles meeting the featured article criteria and passing WP:FAC in time can be considered for the April Fools' mainpage, as discussed at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-03-03/Dispatches. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:32, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Diction

In the article on Fontina, the author writes, "It can be substituted with: Gruyère, Emmental, Beaufort, Taleggio, Edam, or Gouda." What does this mean: that Fontina may be substituted for the named cheeses, that the named cheeses may be substituted for Fontina, or both? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.153.247.8 (talk) 23:59, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
