This is about a specific toolbar. For general toolbars on Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Toolbars.

The Wikipedia Toolbar is a browser extension for Mozilla Firefox that helps editors navigate Wikipedia. This extension brings the Wikipedia search bar as well as several often-used Wikipedia functions to a convenient resting place atop your browser window.

This extension is currently being developed only for the Mozilla Firefox browser, for use with the English language Wikipedia. Report bugs, questions, or feature requests via the talk page.

Contents

[edit] Status

The extension is currently in its beta stages, meaning that it is fully working but may contain bugs.

[edit] System requirements

The only known requirement is any Mozilla Firefox version from 1.5 to 3.0pre.

[edit] Download

[edit] Main download site

[edit] Alternate download site

When the main download link isn't working, use this link instead. We're using all free web hosting for this, so the main download site may be down from time to time.

[edit] Instructions

Simply download the latest version from the download site and run. If you have difficulty running the file directly, you can also drag it into a Firefox browser window, which will also initiate the installation.

[edit] Toolbar toggle button

After installation has completed, you can optionally add a button to your standard Firefox navigation bar that will quickly hide or show the Wikipedia toolbar:

  1. Right-click in your standard Firefox navigation bar (where the back/foward buttons are) and click "Customize".
  2. Drag the button labeled "Wikipedia Toolbar" to the location of your choice on the navigation bar, then click "Done".

[edit] Notes for Firefox 3

Firefox 3 (including beta and pre-release versions) includes an extra security feature that prevents installation of any extension that doesn't provide secure updates. Since the Wikipedia Toolbar doesn't currently provide secure updates, you may need to disable that security feature in order to install the extension. Follow these steps:

  1. Open a Firefox browser window, and enter about:config in the address bar. Press enter. A list of settings will be displayed.
  2. Right click somewhere in the displayed list, and select New -> Boolean.
  3. Enter extensions.checkUpdateSecurity as the name, and select false as the value.

Afterwards you should be able to install the extension as normal.

[edit] License

The Wikipedia Toolbar is open-source software, provided under the GNU public software license. You are free to use, distribute, and modify it.

[edit] Source code

To view the source code, simply download the installation file and replace the "XPI" extension with "ZIP", then extract the contents. Like most Firefox extensions, this one is written in XUL and Javascript.

  • Alternate download site - You can also download the installation file here if the main download link above isn't working.
  • Wikipedia Toolbar at Mozilla - Reviews here are greatly appreciated. If we get enough reviews, this extension could be posted as an official Firefox extension in Mozilla's public listing.
Note: The version available for download from the Mozilla site is not enabled for auto-updating, so you're better off downloading the extension from one of the external download sites linked above. This link is provided primarily to encourage reviews.
