Wikipedia:WikiReader/Spoiler Warning

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A WikiReader Project

Spoiler Warning is an idea for an (eventually) printed book containing some of the best articles from Wikipedia that are spoilers.

[edit] Vision

Wikipedia has thousands of spoilers for books, movies, plays, etc. The idea for a readers digest of condensed book summaries is not new; it is a well proven concept in traditional media.

The "first" reader will contain the best spoilers in fiction (novels). Probably one spoiler for every 2 printed pages on average, for a 250 page book is about 120 spoilers, although 100 may be a more reasonable estimate. The focus will be on novels because it is a clear target market (and a market that reads and buys books). It is also utilitarian; there are so many novels published every year, a short summary of the best novels (prize winners and runners-up) would be a fun read in itself — 100 novels in 200 pages.

The goal is to print and published the book, including an ISBN number and sales online through Amazon. It is not expected that WikiMedia would make money (probably lose money), but project participants could even fund it themselves, to experience the process of creating and publishing and distributing a book, a worthy goal (if only as an editor) for many.

If it is a success, it could carry on to others in a series, such as movies, plays, etc.. and of course any actual profits would go to the Wikimedia Foundation (although, as said, it may be unreasonable to expect this to make money; 90% or more of self-published books sell less than a handful of copies, so a "success" would be a few hundred copies which would not even pay for the costs, while a bonanza would be a few thousand copies, in which case Wikimedia could buy a new server for the farm.)
