Something I think might be nice would be the exploded diagram of an Enigma rotor (by wapcaplet) collapsing into one of the rotors in the rotor assembly diagram (also by wapcaplet). Since Enigma is so important in both the history of crypto (Rejewksi's breakthrough) and in the application of crypto (the importance of Ultra in extremely significant political and social events), it's a fitting subject choice. The visual complexity also would suggest the intricacy of crypto, sort of, more or less, approximately...
The suggested layout would give something of a sense of movement, which is hard to do in static 2D images anyway, and since crypto is so abstract, such a sense of movement would be especially well. But, not being a graphically enabled type (the firmware was omitted at assembly time), this is counsel of perfection from the incompetent. Wapcaplet may be able to magically make it happen though.
