[edit] Departments
[edit] Assessment
The assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of project-supported articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work, and are also expected to play a role in the WP:1.0 program. The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WPZOO}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in a set of categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.
[edit] Guidelines
The guidelines presented in this section are intended to be guidelines only; while they are well-suited for the vast majority of zoo, aquarium, and aviary articles, there exist a number of peculiar cases where, for lack of a better solution, alternate approaches can been taken. Please discuss individual cases on the Project talk page when deviating from guidelines.
[edit] Article naming conventions
- Since the vast majority of zoo, aquarium, and aviary articles are about specific and unique places, simply use the zoo, aquarium, or aviary name as the article name. For example, Reid Park Zoo.
- If you must disambiguate, use Zoo name (zoo).
- See also: Naming conventions (places)
[edit] Article structure
The guidelines in this section are intended to serve as a starting point for writing a good article; they are not meant to enforce a single structure on all articles, nor to limit the topics an article will discuss. Remember to cite your sources!
[edit] Opening paragraph
The opening paragraph should concisely introduce the facility and provide a brief overview of the significant or notable facts about the facility including association membership(s), # of animals and/or species, and/or location of zoo. See WP:LEAD for more information on writing a good opening paragraph.
[edit] Article body
The article can be structured along these lines:
- History
- Areas and attractions
- Notable animals
- Sections on specific notable topics such as conservation, special exhibits, etc.
- Business details, including for-profit or non-profit status, fundraising efforts, etc.
- Notable staff and training programs
Remember to cite your sources per WP:CITE!

A zoo infobox may be used to summarize information about a particular zoo, aquarium, or aviary in a standard manner. Many of the parameters can be omitted if desired; the choice of which parameters are appropriate for a particular zoo, aquarium, or aviary is left to the discretion of the article editors.
The infobox should be added using the {{Infobox zoo}} template, as shown below:
{{Infobox zoo |zoo_name= |logo= |logo_width= |logo_caption= |image= |image_width= |image_caption= |date_opened= |date_closed= |location= |area= |coordinates= |num_animals= |num_species= |members= |exhibits= |website= }}
Required:
- zoo_name — Name of the zoo
- location — city, state, country of where the zoo is location
Optional:
- date_opened — Date the zoo opened
- date_closed — Date the zoo closed
- logo — Logo image name to display at a default width of 300px (use "foo.jpg" instead of "Image:foo.jpg")
- logo_width — width of logo
- logo_caption — caption for the logo that is displayed underneath the image (if necessary or extenuating reasons)
- image — Image name to display at a default width of 300px (use "foo.jpg" instead of "Image:foo.jpg")
- image_width — width of image
- image_caption — caption for the image that is displayed underneath the image
- num_animals — approximate number of animals at the zoo (include a reference or year as well)
- num_species — approximate number of unique species at the zoo (include a reference or year as well)
- area — Land area the zoo occupies (include units and alternate units)
- coordinates — geographical coordinates (latitude & longitude) of the zoo (suggested location is the main entrance)
- Recommended to use this template {{coor dms|lat_d|lat_m|lat_s|N or S|long_d|long_m|long_s|W or E|type:landmark_scale:2500}} with lat_d, lat_m, & lat_s representing the latitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds (north (N) or south (S)) and with long_d, long_m, & long_s representing the longitude (west (W) or east (E))
- members — Zoo association
- exhibits — A short, comma-delimited list of major exhibits
- website — External link to the zoo's website
[edit] Categories
Articles should be placed in the most specific applicable categories, and should not be placed directly in a "parent" category if they are already present in one of its sub-categories. In other words, if an article is placed in Category:Zoos in England, there is no need to place it in Category:Zoos as well.
- Category:Zoos
- Root category for all zoos, aquaria, and aviaries.
- Category:Zoo associations
- Category:Marine parks
- Category:Oceanaria
- Category:Zoos by country
- Classifies zoos by country.
- Category:Aquaria
- Root category for aquaria.
- Category:Aviaries
- Root category for aviaries.
[edit] Stubs
There is only one stub template currently available for all zoo, aquaria, and aviary articles. Please use {{zoo-stub}} for any stub-class articles.
[edit] WikiProject templates
[edit] Project banner
The {{WPZOO}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, it has a number of optional ones that add various extra features to the banner. The full syntax is as follows:
{{WPZOO |class= |attention= }}
General parameters:
- class – a rating of the article's quality; see the assessment department for more details.
- attention – "yes" if the article requires immediate attention; this should be used sparingly.
[edit] Member userbox
You can add this userbox to your user page, signifying your participation in the project. Adding this to your user page automatically adds your username to Category:WikiProject Zoo members.
Code | Result | Usage |
