[edit] Goals
- This WikiProject aims to enhance information on volcanoes, volcanology, igneous petrology, and related articles.
[edit] News
- April 17, 2007: The WikiProject has been active for one month now, and much has been accomplished. Over 2000 articles, lists, and categories within the project's scope have been visited and tagged by project members during that time. Categories have been cleaned up and properly sorted, and hundreds of articles have already been improved, expanded, and most importantly referenced to reliable sources.
- April 25, 2007: A new project portal, Portal:Volcanoes, The Volcanoes and Volcanology Portal, has been created.
- April 28, 2007: In order to easily identify articles in need of attention, article assessments have been implemented. See the subpage /Assessment.
- May 17, 2007: Two months. Over 2280 total pages tagged, including over 2000 articles and lists. Over 1600 articles have been assessed. A bibliography of useful references is now at /Bibliography.
- May 24, 2007: A list of useful public domain and free image resources is now at /Images.
- May 27, 2007: The initial assessment phase has been completed, and all 1923 articles which currently have {{Volcano}} tags have been assessed for quality and importance to the project. Over 2320 total pages have been tagged, including over 2020 articles and lists.
- August 17, 2007: Five months. Over 2,400 total pages tagged, including over 2,000 articles assessed.
- October 17, 2007: Seven months. Over 2,550 total pages tagged.
- December 18, 2007: Nine months. Over 2,600 total pages tagged.
See the subpage /History for a detailed project timeline and progress report.
[edit] Scope
- All articles about volcanoes, volcanic fields, volcanic belts, volcanic arcs, mid-ocean ridges, rift valleys, hotspots, and other volcanic structures.
- Also articles about magma, lava, and volcanic rocks, along with volcanic eruptions and deposits (lava flows, tuffs, tephra, etc.).
- Articles about the science of volcanology, notable volcanologists, and volcano observatories, along with volcanic hazards and monitoring.
- A broad interpretation of the scope would include articles about all igneous rock types, both volcanic (extrusive) and plutonic (intrusive), but mountains made of plutonic rocks would not be included.
- Articles about non-igneous volcanoes (e.g. mud volcanoes, cryovolcanoes) are certainly within the scope of the project, as are articles about volcanoes on other planets and moons.
- Articles about many types of hydrothermal features (fumaroles, hydrothermal vents, black smokers, geysers) are within the scope, since they are commonly associated with magmatic and volcanic activity. Many common hot springs, especially those where nearby volcanic activity is absent, should probably not be included.
- Articles about certain types of volcanogenic lakes, including crater lakes and lava-dammed lakes.
- Articles about some protected areas (such as national parks) which have been set aside primarily because of their volcanic features or due to a volcanic eruption.
- Articles about people, places, or other entities notable for their association with a volcano or volcanoes, including volcano gods and victims. For example, Pompeii, Harry Truman, and Pele.
Please feel free to join the project and expand its scope in any necessary directions. See the section "Total number of articles" (below) for an estimate of the current number of Wikipedia articles within the project's scope.
[edit] Open tasks
- Add the WikiProject Volcanoes message box {{Volcano}} to talk pages of articles within the scope of this project, including appropriate assessments if needed.
- Ensure that all mountains and islands which are volcanoes are properly noted as such in the article text, with proper references.
- Add appropriate volcano type categories to articles, and verify the accuracy of any existing categories. See the section "Categorization" below.
- Add {{infobox mountain}} to articles if needed and missing, and add volcano-related fields to existing infoboxes if these are missing.
Use Category:Unit display templates to ensure accurate conversion of elevations, distances, areas, and volumes. - Expand volcano articles which are stubs, especially by adding photos and (most importantly) proper references.
- Expand the list of volcanoes, it is underpopulated in many areas.
- Bring more volcano articles to Good Article and Featured Article status, including Mount Baker, Mount Vesuvius, Mount Garibaldi, Mount Meager, Mount Cayley, Anahim hotspot, and Mount Ranier.
- Please help the Anahim hotspot article while it undergoes GAN.
Feel free to add on to this "to-do" list.

[edit] Assessment
In order to easily identify articles in need of attention, article assessments have been implemented. These are generated using the optional class and importance parameters in the {{Volcano}} project banner on an article's talk page:
{{Volcano | class= | importance= }}
The statistics at right are updated daily (or every other day) by an automated bot. See the subpage /Assessment for details.
- April 28, 2007: Article assessments have been implemented.
- May 1, 2007: Over 400 articles have been assessed.
- May 5, 2007: Over 1,000 articles have been assessed.
- May 10, 2007: Over 1,400 articles have been assessed.
- May 17, 2007: Over 1,600 articles have been assessed.
- May 25, 2007: Over 1,800 articles have been assessed.
- May 27, 2007: The initial assessment phase has been completed, and all 1,923 articles which currently have {{Volcano}} tags have been assessed.
- June 29, 2007: 1,957 articles have been assessed.
- August 4, 2007: 1,998 articles have been assessed.
- August 17, 2007: Over 2,000 articles have been assessed.
- October 17, 2007: Over 2,050 articles have been assessed.
- December 18, 2007: Over 2,190 articles have been assessed.
[edit] Articles in need of expansion
Now that initial assessments have been completed, the most critical articles to attend to are those marked with "Top" importance, but only "Start" class (there are no "Stub"s in this category at this time). The most important such article is Volcanology, which is one of the two flagship articles of this WikiProject (along with Volcano) and is sorely in need of comprehensive expansion.
In the "High" importance category, over 20% of the articles are only "Stub" class and another 60% are "Start" class, so these also require attention and expansion.
In general, "B" class articles which are "Mid" importance or higher should be polished up and nominated as good articles.
The easiest way to find articles which fall within a particular intersection of quality and importance categories is to use the assessments worklist, which is transcluded from Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/WikiProject Volcanoes articles by quality.
[edit] Project watchlist
Using the bot-generated assessment logs, it is now possible to generate a watchlist which includes all articles within the project's scope. All of the logs have been combined into a single large file with all dates unlinked, so that the following link provides a single unified watchlist which should include all talk pages which have {{Volcano}} tags, along with their corresponding articles:
It is also quite simple to generate a watchlist which includes only the talk pages:
[edit] Similar Wikiprojects
- Most (but not all) volcanoes are also mountains, so they fall within the scope of WikiProject Mountains. But as the "Scope" above demonstrates, this project is far from being a mere subset of WikiProject Mountains. This WikiProject covers a very diverse set of articles despite its relatively narrow field, and only about 60% of its 1800+ articles are about volcanic mountains.
- With 100+ articles about types of igneous rock within its scope, this project also has some overlap with WikiProject Rocks and minerals.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Geology is aimed to organize and expand geology specific articles.

[edit] Categorization
The root category for this WikiProject is Category:Volcanology. The major category, Category:Volcanoes, should be reserved for articles about types of volcanoes and volcanic features, while specific individual volcanoes and volcanic belts / fields / regions / zones should be listed in the appropriate subcategories.
If an article about a volcano is added to the project, please ensure that it has the correct country-specific, region-specific, or ocean-specific volcano category, e.g. Category:Volcanoes of the United States, Category:Volcanoes of Mars, Category:Volcanoes of the Atlantic Ocean. Also consider adding a link to the article in the appropriate list article, such as List of volcanoes in New Zealand, List of extraterrestrial volcanoes, etc. (see Category:Lists of volcanoes for current choices).
Next, please ensure that it has the correct volcanic type categories (one or more, in some cases):
- Articles about a particular volcanic eruption should be listed in Category:Volcanic events, while articles about types of volcanic eruptions are listed in Category:Volcanic eruption types.
- Articles about lakes located within volcanic craters and calderas are listed in Category:Crater lakes. This new category (created March 27, 2007) has quickly grown to contain over 200 articles, and it is already perhaps the most comprehensive list of crater lakes available anywhere. A convincing demonstration of the power and magic of Wikipedia!
- Articles about general topics in volcanology may be listed in Category:Volcanology.
- Articles about notable volcanologists/vulcanologists are listed in Category:Volcanologists.
[edit] Category sorting
It is important that volcano names which begin with "Mount" or "Volcán" or some such words are sorted based on their actual name, not the generic prefix. The easiest way to ensure this for all categories in an article is to place the magic word {{DEFAULTSORT:<sort key>}} before the category tags. This will apply the sort key to all categories at once, without having to enter something like "|Rainier, Mount" in several category tags. See Template:DEFAULTSORT for more info.
[edit] Category cleanup
- A comprehensive cleanup of the subcategories in Category:Volcanoes was undertaken during the first weeks of this project, since previously entire trees like Category:Archipelagoes (every island group in the world?) and Category:Saint Helena (including every single thing about this little island) had been mis-filed as subcategories of Category:Volcanoes by ocean. Most category problems and errors have now been fixed, and any other new or unfixed errors should be taken care of as they are found.
- More cleanup: Please note that Category:Craters and its subcategories such as Category:Craters of the United States are intended primarily (exclusively?) for impact craters, not volcanic craters. A few volcanic craters and calderas had been misfiled under these categories, and these have been fixed. Some "Craters of ..." categories were also misfiled as subcategories of corresponding "Volcanoes of ..." categories, and these too have now been re-sorted.

[edit] Total number of articles
An initial attempt was made to count the number of pages within the scope of this WikiProject, both manually and also using CatScan to automatically sum an entire category tree. Unfortunately, due to the 35 day lag in updating the database for the English Wikipedia, the CatScan numbers are quite outdated. Also, there is often significant overlap between categories, because some categories may be subcategories of two different areas or continents, and so these are double counted in the table below.
Many areas were very poorly categorized and organized before this project began, with cities and other non-volcanic features appearing within the volcano categories due to inappropriate category/subcategory choices and relationships. One of the goals of this WikiProject is to improve the categorization of volcanoes, and these problems have largely been addressed and resolved. The CatScan tool is very useful for finding such problems, although until the database lag is fixed there is no way to see the effects of any recent changes and improvements. These CatScan searches were run with a depth of 2 in most areas (except 3 in North America and 1 in some others) to avoid finding too many extraneous articles, and numbers below have been adjusted to try to eliminate such articles from this list.

[edit] Multiple WikiProject Volcanoes tags
The original {{Volcano}} template has now been supplemented by five additional ones for tagging different types of pages:
Template | Page type | Category for tagged pages | Number of tagged pages |
---|---|---|---|
{{Volcano}} | Articles | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes articles | 2,200 |
{{Volcano list}} | Stand-alone lists | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes lists | 105 |
{{Volcano category}} | Categories | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes categories | 249 |
{{Volcano template}} | Templates | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes templates | 15 |
{{Volcano project}} | Project pages | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes project pages | 18 |
{{Volcano image}} | Images | Category:WikiProject Volcanoes images | 17 |
Total tagged pages as of Dec 18, 2007 | 2,604 |
Current total for the project: 2,200 articles (including lists), more than 1/1,000 of the English Wikipedia (currently 2,411,215 articles). See the subpage /History for a detailed progress report and table of article counts since Aprl 16, 2007.
The use of separate templates follows the example of some WikiProjects (e.g WikiProject Oregon), and it was easy to implement quickly when the need had arisen. The original {{Volcano}} template has also now been updated to include optional class and importance parameters to allow article assessments.
Note that {{Volcano image}} should be used to tag featured pictures which show volcanoes or volcanic phenomena, along with other selected pictures of particular notability or quality, thus placing them within a single category for easy access. As of May 13, all such featured pictures which could be found have been tagged. The tag should probably be used sparingly, only on selected photos, maps, and graphics which are important to the WikiProject, and not placed indiscriminately on thousands of volcano images. Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons may also be tagged.
[edit] Featured articles
As of 9 March 2008, fifteen featured articles have been given a {{Volcano}} project tag:
See Category:FA-Class WikiProject Volcanoes articles for an up to date list.
There is also one featured list:
[edit] New articles
Please feel free to list any new volcano or volcanology articles here if you would like to bring them to this WikiProject's attention:
- Myojin-sho, a Japanese submarine volcano. Totnesmartin 22:10, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- Dense-Rock Equivalent, which is used to measure historic and prehistoric eruptions. I am not a geologist nor do I play one on TV, so I'm struggling in the writing of it. Any help is welcomed, because a lot of articles could refer to the article in describing these ancient eruptions. Orangemarlin 23:41, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- Axial Seamount, a submarine volcano in the Juan de Fuca Ridge. I've also filled out List of submarine volcanoes a bit. Myasuda 00:29, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- Mount Tarumae - a Japanese active volcano on the island of Hokkaido - 'A' rank
- List of volcanoes by elevation - Jespinos (talk) 04:51, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
- Bola (volcano) an active volcano in New Britain Meldshal42Comments and SuggestionsMy Contributions 13:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- Chaitén (volcano) Although I did not create this article, I wanted to notify it was new. Meldshal42Hit meWhat I've Done 20:03, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
If you would like to request the creation of a particular article, please post on the project talk page.
[edit] Images
Wikimedia Commons has many images of volcanoes and volcanic phenomena, along with igneous rocks. Many of these photos would make useful additions to many of our articles here which may be lacking adequate illustrations.
Please see the Commons categories at right, or try searching on Commons since many images available there are not properly categorized yet.
A new subpage /Images has been created with links to many useful public domain and free image resources.
[edit] Issues of ongoing concern
Continual IP vandalism to numerous volcano-related articles, including:
- semi-protection requested and granted on 20 March 2007 (for 1 month), extended to indefinite on 27 April 2007 --
- -- semi-protection requested and granted on 26 March 2007 (for 1 week), again on 08 April 2007 (for 15 days)
- -- semi-protection requested and granted on 26 March 2007 (for 1 week)
- -- semi-protection requested on 26 March 2007, but declined
- -- vandalism was heavy, but has dropped below a level needing protection
- -- semi-protection requested and granted on 16 April 2007 (for 1 week), on May 3, 2007 (for 2 weeks)
- -- semi-protection requested and granted on 20 April 2007 (for 1 week)
- -- semi-protection requested and granted on 26 April 2007 (for 2 weeks)
- -- semi-protected indefinitely on 27 February 2007; unprotected on 10 June 2007
- -- semi-protected indefinitely on 01 May 2007
- -- ongoing vandalism, may be time for semi-protection
Please consider adding these articles (and other volcano-related ones, too) to your watchlist, to help in reverting the ongoing vandalism which is certain to resume once semi-protection expires. Even during the period of semi-protection, some articles continue to be vandalized by recently registered accounts.
If you find any other volcano-related articles which are being heavily vandalized (as a rough standard, over 10 vandals per day, or continual vandalism for several days such that the last 50+ edits are all vandalism and reverts), please report them at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and add them to the list above.
What a strange topic to vandalise ClimberDave 11:35, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- These articles are mostly vandalized by schoolkids. See the comments in the block log for Mount Vesuvius, for example. --Seattle Skier (talk) 20:06, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
