Welcome to the Veterinary medicine WikiProject. We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of articles related to veterinary medicine.

Goals
  • The goal of this WikiProject is to create, improve, and maintain articles and content relating to the subject of medicine as it relates to non-human animals, with particular attention paid to companion, domestic, exotic, wildlife, and production animals.
Scope

Contents

[edit] Guidelines

We shall try to follow the guidelines of the Manual of Style in construction of articles. A more specific guideline for medical articles can be found at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (medicine-related articles).

[edit] Open tasks

This list is incomplete.

  • Stub expansion - A list of stubs can be found at Category:Veterinary medicine stubs.
  • Assessing importance and quality - Guidelines can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Veterinary medicine/Assessment.
  • General clean up and improvement of existing articles, especially the ones rated as important.
  • Adding quality references to unreferenced or under-referenced articles
  • Images - Many articles are missing images. See below under resources for suggestions of image sources.
  • A symbol for this Wikiproject - Image:Esclapius stick.svg could be modified by adding a V to it, if anyone has talent in that direction. Otherwise, any appropriate free image would be good.

[edit] Naming guidelines and other considerations

Right now there are a variety of ways that vet med pages are named. Some do not indicate that they are specifically animal related. This is fine for diseases that only occur in animals, such as Foot-and-mouth disease or Pseudorabies, but it may not be appropriate for diseases that occur also in humans (but currently lack human information), such as Hip dysplasia or Chronic superficial keratitis. Also, some diseases are disambiguated differently, such as Bladder stone (animal) or Cerebellar hypoplasia (non-human). Others begin with the specific breed, such as Canine ehrlichiosis or Feline lower urinary tract disease. Some uniformity should be decided on.

Related to this, there are quite a few medical articles that contain both human and animal information. Should they always be separated into different articles, or can they be kept together? Obviously, once the information on animals is long enough, it can be split off. However, even for articles with only a short paragraph on the disease in animals, there has been suggestions that it is inappropriate for articles about the "human" disease. Please discuss on the talk page.

[edit] Resources

See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Reliable sources, a good guideline for what to use for sources.

  • PubMed - Good search tool for journal articles related to specific vet med topics. Full articles are sometimes available, especially from the Canadian Veterinary Journal, Veterinary Pathology, and The Journal of Veterinary Medical Science (Japan).
  • Other online journals that are free with membership in the respective associations include the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (back to 2000) and the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association (back to 1998).
  • International Veterinary Information Service - Free for veterinary professionals, it has some textbooks and conference proceedings (WSAVA, NAVC, AAEP, SCIVAC, and others) online.
  • Merck Veterinary Manual [1] - Good online resource for background information.
  • Veterinary Information Network - A nonfree site, but it has a great number of veterinary journals (abstracts only) and conference notes (WVC, ACVIM, IVECCS, etc.) online.
  • Veterinary college websites can usually be considered to be reliable.
  • A Google search will often reveal reliable resources.
  • Non-online resources such as textbooks and vet med-related periodicals

[edit] Images

Any decent digital camera is probably our best source for images. Pictures of pets or patients can be very helpful (generally with the owner's permission). Barring a self made image being available, there are some possible public domain or otherwise free sources available at various sites. If an image on a federal government website does not have a Used by permission tag or a photo credit to a private institution or unversity, it is probably PD.

  • The Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal [2] often has vet med related images. It is published by the CDC and therefore in the public domain.
  • The Public Health Image Library is also a good source for PD medical images.
  • The CDC also has a page dedicated to parasite identification with good images.
  • USGS National Wildlife Health Center's Field Manual of Wildlife Disease — General Field Procedures and Diseases of Birds [3]. Unless otherwise stated, the images in these PDF files are taken by USGS employees and therefore PD. These are not searchable through google, so it is a good place to check for images of bird diseases.
  • USDA's outreach publications, for agricultural health issues [4] - also PDF and not google searchable.
  • USDA's Agricultural Research Service Agricultural Research journal [5]. Some files are PDF and have different images than the html pages.
  • A google image search with the modifier site:.gov will turn up images on federal government websites which may or may not be public domain. Please note that state government websites are not PD.
  • Wikimedia Commons has a Category:Veterinary medicine that has many free images, and all new images should ideally be uploaded there for use among different wikis.

Please feel free to add yourself here, and to indicate any areas of particular interest.

  • Badbilltucker - Regretably not the brightest bulb in the world, particularly in matters relating to medicine. Will probably focus primarily on formatting of content and other "administrative" functions as time and circumstances permit.
  • Carlo Banez - Interested in adding drugboxes to each article regarding veterinary drugs.
  • Joelmills - I don't mind doing grunt work on article creation and improvement, and I have a general interest in all aspects of vet med. However, I definitely lack the ability to organize things like this. Tell me what goes where, and I'll help out here and I'll continue to create articles.
  • John Carter 14:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC) - have access to a lot of good source materials, even if not overwhelmingly qualified otherwise
  • Smooth_O
  • Lamaglama
  • DL Harris - Most interested in Equine medicine side of the project (that's my job, after all...)
  • Flukeboy - interested in Veterinary Parasitology and Immunology
  • Ohadaloni - Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome.
  • NotThatKat - Small animal medicine and surgery NotThatKat 06:38, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Montanabw(talk) 04:04, 24 October 2007 (UTC) Oh all right, I'm in! What the heck. All things equine, particularly interested in genetic stuff and lameness issues.
  • Bishor
  • SaritaMackita I guess I've gotten into pathogens, particularly dog pathogens.
  • —CynRN I'm not a vet, but I breed miniature schnauzers and recently got interested in CAM topics in veterinary medicine. I am a skeptic.
