WikiProject Unmanned Space Missions aims to standardize articles on unmanned space missions. While the main goal of this is to standardize scientific and exploratory programs, the templates in here can also apply to any artificial satellite. See sister project WikiProject Space Missions for manned space missions.

[edit] Structure

Unmanned space missions should begin with the bolded name of the mission, followed by a simple description of the mission.

The page should be roughly divided up with several headers, in the rough following order: Mission Description, Spacecraft Design, and Mission Results. Please note that this is not a hard and fast rule, but is meant for a general rule of thumb.

On the top, right-hand corner of the article should be an infobox. The infobox should contain a picture of the spacecraft and describe the general characteristics of the spacecraft. All units should be in SI.

On the bottom should be a table linking again to the program/spaceship.

As for other standards that do not pertain to a preferred page design:

  • Times in the table should be 24-hour UTC. Times in the text of a document should be in 12-hour local time (with UTC offset given). Any link of UTC in the table should only be done once. Years however should be linked every time.
  • Duration should have written out time words. (e.g. "1 day, 1 hour, 8 minutes", not "1 day 01:08" or "25:08")
  • Even though this can be construed as a historical project, it is also very much a scientific project, so please use only metric units in the articles.
  • Longitude and Latitude should be in degrees, minutes, and seconds if possible, rather than in decimal format.
  • All picture should be thumbnails.

[edit] Mission that are part of a larger Program

Should the mission be one in a series of spacecraft, please include at the bottom the following

Previous Mission:
(previous mission)
(spacecraft/program link) Next Mission:
(next mission)

[edit] Done

[edit] To Do

  • Process the UCS earth-satellite list; create articles for notable satellites (ones with a science mission, perhaps); use the orbital/launch information to infobox existing articles on earth satellites
