WikiProject Tourism was started on May 17, 2007 to coordinate work for and expand coverage of tourism and related subjects in the English Wikipedia.
Anyone who is interested in contributing, please sign up below and post any ideas and suggestions on the Talk page. Also, feel free to edit this page and add any articles that need serious work or that you feel require attention below in the Tasks section.
[edit] Scope and Introduction
This WikiProject aims to coordinate and help maintain the development of and improvements to articles related to tourism. Below, you will find tasks, and other information related to the WikiProject.
[edit] Tourism vs. Travel
Travel is the physical movement from place to place. For example, trains, airlines, and subway stations should be included in travel. However, these are not appropriate topics for tourism, unless there are special circumstances. Tourism is the act of going somewhere or doing something that is not done in the daily routine, or around one's hometown (in most cases), for the act of leisure or recreational purposes, for a period of time, usually longer than 24 hours. However, when a conflict arises, the best thing to do would be to leave it as it is for the moment, and bring the issue to the WikiProject Tourism talkpage. From there, we can build concensus. The debates should not be like XfDs in the term of the duration of debates. 2-3 days would be sufficient in most cases.
Note:WikiProject Tourism focuses on articles related to actual tourism, not tourism destinations. For example, Tourism in Japan or adventure tourism would be appropriate topics. The Eiffel Tower or The Louvre would not.
Note:If you believe there is something wrong with the definition, or you would like to add to it, go ahead. We welcome expansions and corrections of this to help the project.
[edit] Participants
To become a project member, please edit this section to add your name, along with an optional short bio to the bottom. You may also add the the {{User WPTOUR}} userbox to your user page to identify yourself as a member of the project. We currently need as much help as we can get, so please consider signing up.
[edit] Coordinators
Coordinators are volunteers that are interested in helping "running" the project in a way. This does not mean that they control the project, or are the "CEOs" of it. It means that they would like to accept a responsibility.
[edit] Coordinators
Cool Blue (talk · contribs) - I am the creator of the project, and a current coordinator. I plan to spend a lot of time with the Project.

[edit] Tasks
Feel free to add any tourism-related articles that need to be addressed or improved, in addition to general tasks.
- Get a peer review for space tourism, and see what we can do to get it to GA.
- Cleanup volunteer vacation. The article sounds more like a dedicated volunteer vacation site, than an encyclopedia.
Cleanup Backpacking (travel). The article has been less than useful almost since its creation. I self-nominated for this after realising there was little I could do for YHA.This has been do ne, while I don't think the article is perfect, I think it's a marked improvement from what it was and am hoping the NPOV tag will go away soon. Off to tackle some others. Travellingcari 15:57, 31 October 2007 (UTC)- Create new Tourism in ____ articles with the countries in Africa. Per this:
|
We don't have very many tourism-related Africa articles. Also, be sure to check the templates for other continents, too.
- Assess as many articles as we can. We're just starting off, and we need as much help as we can get.
- Is anyone up for an assessment/review of Backpacking (travel)? I think it's been improved but could always do with more. I'm interested to know if there's a consensus on what could change there. If this is the wrong place to post it, I apologize but Wikipedia:WikiProject_Tourism/Assessment doesn't have a talk page and I wasn't sure where else to put it. Travellingcari (talk) 15:41, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- Cleanup Tourism in the United States. Editorofthewikireview my edits here! 00:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
