[edit] Departments
[edit] Assessment
The assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of project-supported articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work, and are also expected to play a role in the WP:1.0 program. The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WPTOWER}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in a set of categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.
[edit] Article of Focus
The Article of Focus is a part of the Project which is designed to concentrate the collaboration of the project. Articles are nominated, and then voted on to become the Article of Focus. Once an Article of Focus is determined, all members are encouraged to contribute to the article. The Article will remain in Focus until the article's quality has been improved adaquately.
[edit] Guidelines
The guidelines presented in this section are intended to be guidelines only; while they are well-suited for the vast majority of The Dark Tower articles, there exist a number of peculiar cases where, for lack of a better solution, alternate approaches can been taken. Please discuss individual cases on the Project talk page when deviating from guidelines.
[edit] Article naming conventions
- Use the topic name as the article name when it is unique. For example, Roland Deschain or Eddie Dean.
- If you must disambiguate, use something logical and generic, such as (fictional character) or (fictional location).
- See also: Wikipedia:Naming conventions
[edit] Article structure
The guidelines in this section are intended to serve as a starting point for writing a good article; they are not meant to enforce a single structure on all articles, nor to limit the topics an article will discuss. Remember to cite your sources!
[edit] Opening paragraph
The opening paragraph, or lead section, should provide a concise summary of the important points in the article. For characters, the lead may include a summary of their major role in the stories. For places, the lead may include a summary of major events that happened at them. For articles about entire books or other media, briefly summarize the plot.
[edit] Article body
You primarily should use the Wikipedia Manual of Style for writing about fiction to govern article text. It is essential, in writing about fictional characters, places, and so on, to write in an encyclopedic fashion from an "out-of-universe perspective" as detailed in that Style Guide. Make sure your writing is clear and understandable to someone who has never read the books; for example, do not refer to other Dark Tower-specific things without providing context and/or wikilinks.
[edit] Citations
Remember to cite your sources per WP:CITE! The novels themselves are considered primary sources and are not acceptable citations for statements made in articles. This violates the Wikipedia policy of no original research. Facts in your article must be verifiable with reliable sources, such as books or magazine articles about The Dark Tower series.
An excellent example of an acceptable secondary source for Dark Tower articles is Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance by Robin Furth.
[edit] Categories
Articles should be placed in the most specific applicable categories, and should not be placed directly in a "parent" category if they are already present in one of its sub-categories. In other words, if an article is placed in Category:The Dark Tower characters, there is no need to place it in Category:The Dark Tower as well.
- List of categories
- Category:The Dark Tower - main category
- Category:The Dark Tower characters - category for characters in the novels and related media
- Category:The Dark Tower comics - category for comics based on the series
- Category:The Dark Tower novels - category for the novels of the series
- Category:The Dark Tower places - category for places in the novels and related media
- Category:The Dark Tower beings - category for races and creatures in the series
- Category:The Dark Tower organizations - category for the corporations in the series
[edit] Stubs
You can use different stub templates for short articles depending on the context. For example:
- {{Fict-location-stub}} pertains to articles about places in The Dark Tower series.
- {{Lit-char-stub}} pertains to articles about characters in The Dark Tower series.
- {{Fictional-stub}} pertains to miscellaneous objects, technologies, and so on in The Dark Tower series.
- {{Fantasy-book-stub}} pertains to articles about novels in The Dark Tower series, although this should not be necessary since none of the book articles are stubs.
[edit] WikiProject templates
[edit] Article footer template
The {{DarkTower}} template should be added (not subst:ed) to the bottom of every article within the scope of the project.
[edit] Project banner
The {{WPTOWER}} project banner template should be added (not subst:ed) to the talk page of every article within the scope of the project. While the template does not require any additional parameters, you can add an assessment parameter according to the guidlines at Wikipedia:WikiProject The Dark Tower/Assessment. The full syntax is as follows:
{{WPTOWER | class=???}}
General parameters:
- class – a rating of the article's quality; see the assessment department for more details.
[edit] Member userbox
You can add this userbox to your user page, signifying your participation in the project. Adding this to your user page automatically adds your username to Category:WikiProject The Dark Tower members.
