[edit] Scope and goals

The Avatar: The Last Airbender task force is a collective effort between Wikipedians to enhance and maintain the quality of all pages on Wikipedia that contain information on the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Many of the pages that relate to the series are currently muddled with conjecture, trivial information, or poor grammar/spelling. For the sake of both the users and Wikipedia as a whole, this project strives to bring all pages relating to Avatar: The Last Airbender up to par with the rest of the encyclopedia. The project seeks to reach this goal by implementing a two-step process:

  1. Establishing content guidelines and structural guidelines for Wikipedians to utilize when creating or updating articles
  2. Utilizing said guidelines to improve all current and future articles

This project is a long-term effort, and all Wikipedians are welcome to contribute, regardless of how much or how little time or energy they can be contribute. Short of Wikipedia policies and (more than likely) Wikipedia guidelines, all aspects of this project are always open to discussion and debate on the talk page. Like the pages it seeks to improve, the project itself will continue to evolve as new and exciting ideas from its members are incorporated.

[edit] Guidelines

[edit] Content

Content guidelines encompass guidelines for what types of information to include, what types of information not to include, and the appropriate style for information in all articles within in the project. These guidelines are detailed below; feel free to discuss them on the talk page.

When working on Avatar: The Last Airbender articles, remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and should be treated as such (see What Wikipedia is not). While popular in the fan base, conjectural items such as unwarranted shipping, theories on events in a character's unrevealed past (i.e. how Fire Lord Azulon died), and possible future events in the series do not belong in any of the articles. Remember to keep in mind that there are differences between encyclopedic entries and fan webpages.

This means that when creating/editing articles, do not:

  1. Add unverifiable information, original research, your point of view, or uncited claims. This encompasses all theories, assumptions, opinions, and unwarranted shipping fantasies that are not published in reliable sources.
  2. Insert trivial information (see Notability (fiction), Fancruft, Importance).
  3. Lose sight of the fact that the series' events and characters, as fictional creations, should not be included in Wikipedia as if they are factual events that occurred in "our universe" (see Check your fiction, Manual of Style for writing about fiction).

It's also a good idea to have at least a working knowledge of the Manual of Style and the How to edit a page article to avoid others having to copy-edit, cleanup or wikify pages later.

Other than that, be bold in updating pages and have fun!

[edit] Structure

Structural guidelines encompass guidelines for how information relating to the show is broken up and distributed by categories, articles, sections, and templates, as well as the format for all articles within a category and the format for all templates. These guidelines are detailed below; feel free to discuss them on the talk page.

Format guidelines for the articles within the below categories are currently under discussion:

[edit] To-do list

To-do list for Wikipedia:WikiProject Television/Avatar: The Last Airbender task force:
  • Discuss the direction, guidelines, and tasks of the WikiProject
  • Expand the WikiProject by bringing in new members (i.e. advertise)
  • Bring all other articles up to good article status
  • Add reliable citations to pages where necessary
  • Add information to pages that ties the show to reality (i.e. effects on popular culture, influences, etc.)
  • Create new, appropriate articles
  • Expand current articles, including adding images where appropriate
  • Copy-edit/cleanup/wikify existing articles
  • Add respective templates to all knowledge- and episode-based articles
  • Assess articles that have no importance rating.
  • Assess all unassessed articles.
  • Identify articles appropriate to include in the open tasks box below

[edit] Article maintenance

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced. Feel free to list any articles you've adopted below (the most-recently adopted articles at top, please)

[edit] IRC

There is now an IRC node on irc://chat.freenode.net for the Avatar WikiProject. It is called #wikipedia-avatar. Please use it to talk with other project members in need.

[edit] Referencing

In order to keep reference information uniform and as informative as possible, it is encouraged, but not required, that users use special reference templates set up to cite Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes. Simply type {{subst:avatarref-PRODUCTIONCODE}}, replacing production code with the production code of the episode to be cited. The only bug is that the references have a line break that just needs to be removed afterward. The references include links to the episode summaries and transcripts as well as the director and writer for that episode. Remember to subst the template!

[edit] User Warning

If users are constantly adding unsourced information about upcoming Avatar episodes, consider placing {{subst:WP:AVATAR/uw|ARTICLENAME}}, replacing ARTICLENAME with the name of the article, on their userpage. It creates a specific warning for adding such information.

All articles related to the project should have the {{TelevisionWikiProject}} template added to their talk pages.

The template has a class= parameter that provides an article assessment rating and a avatar-importance= parameter that provides an article's rating on the importance scale:

{{TelevisionWikiProject| class=??? | importance=??? | avatar=yes | avatar-importance=???}}

The following values may be used for the class parameter:

In addition, the article is added to Category:???-Class television articles.

The following values may be used for the avatar-importance parameter:

If a rating is not assigned, the article will be filed in Category:Unassessed Avatar: The Last Airbender articles. The class should be assigned according to the grading scheme. As with the class parameter, the article is also added to Category:???-importance television articles.

For the normal importance parameter, it is the same as the avatar-importance parameter, but instead of specifying the importance of the article in the Avatar: The Last Airbender task force, it specifies the importance of the article in the Television WikiProject as a whole.

The article ratings are used to generate a project worklist.
