- Comments
- Poor article. Could do with a *huge* expansion to cover the life of the first Sikh Guru. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:48, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that this article require a lot of work. May be we should first decide on the main sub-sections that we should include in the article and then see how we can work on these sub-sections. I think we will require probably 4 weeks to accomplish this task. Hari Singh 15:46, 17 July 2006 (UTC) [-- Moved layout suggestion to article talk page. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 00:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)]
- Indeed, this should be the ideal article to start on for this portal - The fount of the faith himself. I agree with Hari Singh. We need to develop sub-sections in the article. And I am sure there can be many.
Guru Nanak lived from 1469 to 1539 - a period of seventy years; a long time indeed. Also, it was the time when most of India was in ferment, with the Bhakti and Sufi movements in full swing. Since Qasim's invasion of Sindh in 712, Hinduism and Islam, the two dominant faiths of the Subcontinent had known each other for more than 800 years.
Also, Nanak's life encompassed the transfer of power from the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughal Empire, a force to reckon with for the next 300 years (if you count till 1857).
Hence, the most ideal way to start would be to capture the essence of Northern India in general and the Punjab in particular in those days. After all, it was this social and political ferment coupled with the socio-reform movements that would lay the foundation of Sikhism.Rajatjghai 16:44, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
With no objections, this is now our current collaboration effort. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 00:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sadly not very good, especially considering the importance of the subject. I believe that this article deserves nothing less than to be a Featured article. — Seadog 04:56, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- I have added some content and tried to improve the layout of article.Any comments and advice?Ajjay (talk) 03:49, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Important points
Points I've just jotted down ....
- In the interest of neutrality, do not use titles and honorifics such as 'Sri' or 'Ji' unless absolutely necessary (for example, Sri Chand is correct, but Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is not!).
- Limit the use of the term 'Guru'. Exceptions:
- When introducing one of the ten Gurus for the first time in an article. Subsequently remove the the 'Guru' title.
- The "Guru Granth Sahib" is always referred to as the "Guru Granth Sahib", never the "Granth Sahib". When referring to the Guru Granth Sahib several times in a short piece of text, it is appropriate to refer to it as "the Granth" (the same applies to the Dasam Granth or any other holy book with the term 'Granth' in the title).
- Do not use pseudo-transliterations for terms. [EXPAND]
- Sanskrit derived words that are prominent in fields outside of Sikhism should use the traditional Sanskrit spelling. For example, 'Maya' (ਮਾਯਾ)and not 'Maia' (ਮਾਇਆ), karma not karm. But 'Panj Piare' not 'Panj Pyare' because this is used within the realm on Sikhism.
