[edit] Scope

This page outlines guidelines for whether a School warrants its own article. If a school does not seem to warrant its own article, this page outlines appropriate ways to incorporate information about the school into other articles.

This article is not a Wikipedia policy. WikiProject Schools has developed these guidelines to prevent long, repetitive discussions about school articles.

[edit] To-do list

  • Propose possible guidelines for discussion
  • Find relevant discussions and document the outcome
  • Eventually, cite this page in future discussions and AfD nominations.

[edit] Guidelines

Statements starting with "Proposed:" have not yet been cited to a supporting discussion. Please add citations to relevant discussion, or initiate a discussion on this talk page.

[edit] Schools that warrant articles

  • Proposed: All schools must satisfy the criteria outlined in WP:N. In practice most high schools/secondary schools in the English-speaking world can easily satisfy these criteria. The onus is on the editor to demonstrate the school's notability and to provide suitable references.

[edit] Schools that do not warrant articles

  • Proposed: The majority of primary/elementary schools will not be able to satisfy the notability criteria and will therefore not merit a separate article.
  • Proposed: The majority of middle schools/junior high schools are also unlikely to satisfy the Wikipedia notability criteria.

If a school does not warrant an article it does not mean that there should not be any information on the school. Consideration should be given to including some information about the school in:

  1. Proposed: An article on the town, village or city in which the school is located under a heading labelled Education.
  2. Proposed: An article for the school district (USA or Canada) or larger educational group to which the school belongs if one exists.
