Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Rugby union. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you have a passion for rugby union and wish to make Wikipedia the world's foremost reference on rugby union like the rest of our participants then add your name to the list below. Then read the section below labelled How to help or inquire on our talk page. For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices. You may sign up for the project on the Participants list. We are in search of graphic artists for rugby union diagrams. Also any images of professional leagues would be very helpful.

[edit] Scope

The aim of the project is to create a pool of consistent and attractive articles that are easy to find and read, which can be achived by maintaining and creating:

  • the Rugby union category and sub-category structures
  • templates, infoboxes and other tools to help wikipedias display and make better use of content
  • articles related to rugby union
  • Portal:Rugby Union and Current sports events up-to-date for international matches and provincial competitions.
  • Recent deaths and Current sports events up to date when notable rugby union players pass on. (As usually there are newspaper obituaries written when a rugbian dies, it is also an opportunity to write up and improve the Wikipedia article on that player.)
  • Coordinate efforts and peer review articles
  • Expand the biographies on every man who has played Test rugby (all players who have played in at least one Test).Allblacks.com maintains bios on every All Black.
  • Increase the number of well-written rugby union-related articles
  • Expand and improve other rugby union-related articles

[edit] Recently updated articles and News

The following rugby union-related articles have been recently updated or created (note: this is not a complete list, just a list of articles which WikiProject RU participants wish to bring to the attention of other participants):

[edit] How to help

  • Create — The most important thing is information first. If an article has not been written on a topic which has much available information, then write it.
  • Clean up — Many articles, especially when they are first written, can be messy, incomprehensive and even incorrect. You can help by tidying up such articles with respect to what is correct and the wikiproject's guidelines on formatting articles.
  • Feature status — Bringing an article to feature status is an advanced job possibly not suited to a novice wikipedian or novice writer. This requires turning a good article into an article of outstanding excellence.

The above also applies to templates, categories and other wiki items that make finding rugby union information easier.

You can find articles that you like to edit by browsing the rugby union category.

[edit] Peer review

The peer review department conducts peer reviews of articles on request; this helps to obtain ideas for further improvement by having contributors who may not have previously worked on particular articles examine them. Project members are invited to submit articles to the department in lieu of using the generic peer review process. You can submit an article for peer review or assist in reviewing articles here.

[edit] Quiz

A quiz to test and improve your general knowledge of rugby union could be started at Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby union/Quiz. Feel free to join in.

[edit] Criteria guideline for article inclusion

See also: Wikipedia:Importance and Wikipedia:Criteria for inclusion of biographies.

WikiProject Rugby union participants have adopted the following guidelines for notability of a rugby union person for an article in Wikipedia:

  • has appeared in at least one test match, sevens competition or domestic rugby competition, as player, umpire, coach or administrator
  • has appeared in at least one first class rugby union match

Please note that the failure to meet these criteria does not mean an article must be deleted; conversely, the meeting of any of these criteria does not mean that an article must be kept. These are merely rules of thumb which some editors choose to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to keep an article that is on articles for deletion. In particular, players from the early days of rugby cannot meet these criteria as they pre-date the era of first-class rugby.

Also, please keep in mind that the article in question must actually document that the criterion is true. It is not enough to make vague claims in the article or rant about person's importance on a talk page or VfD page -- the article itself must document notability.

[edit] Article style guide

Whilst naming and editing rugby union-related articles, editors often encounter recurring questions of style. Project Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby union/Participants have agreed to the following style guidelines to keep a consistent look and feel to rugby union articles throughout Wikipedia. These styles also fall within the WP:MOS guidelines and WP:NC policies. See also: Wikipedia:Manual of style

[edit] Naming Conventions

Parts of this section are disputed; see Talk for details.

Rugby union shall be written in lower case, such as rugby union, except when starting a sentence, such as in this one.

See the rugby union discussion page for more information.

Also see wikipedia naming conventions, for naming articles.

Can I add a plea here not to use 'rugby' to mean 'rugby union'. I know that in many countries rugby=rugby union and if league exists then it is called 'league' and almost never referred to as 'rugby'. However this is not universal and in some parts of the world e.g. much of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria rugby almost always means 'rugby league'. I have tried to go through both sets of articles 'correcting' this usage. This is very much a bone of contention among English league fans who see it as marginalising rugby league. I can see only a couple of 'correct' usages of 'rugby' for the 15 man code 1) when required to do so by the title of the article - the RWC is the Rugby World Cup; it would be silly to alter this to RUWC 2) talking about 'champagne rugby union' or 'counter-attacking rugby union' is odd.GordyB 17:18, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Positional templates

It is encouraged that instead of directly linking a rugby union position to Rugby union positions, the link is replaced by the appropriate template. This is so that if in the future a section heading is renamed, or an article split off then only the template needs to be updated, not several hundred articles. For more details see discussion Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union/Archive 3#Position templates. There are positional templates for the various positional names. The full list is:

Instructions for use

The parameter {{template name|capital=yes}} can be added to make the first letter a capital.

For plurals; if an s simply needs to be amended, then place it directly outside the template. E.g. {{Wing}}s gives wings

For other plurals, use the parameter {{template |plural=yes}} E.g. {{scrum-half|plural=yes}} gives scrum-halves

Multiple parameters can also be used, for example {{Fly-half |capital=yes |plural=yes}} gives Fly-halves

[edit] Content

[edit] Upcoming and recent fixtures

For national rugby union teams, recent fixture and upcoming fixture lists should not be included. Consensus has been reached between the project members (see here) that such lists are unencyclopaedic, and are not suitable in the article. Such lists create problems with duplication, and article size. Instead, templates such as {{rugby07}} should be added that link to a teams competitions. For example the 'end of year tests', Tri-nations, or Six Nations.

[edit] Succession boxes

Succession boxes should be avoided for team article pages as per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union/Archive 5#Succession boxes. Consensus among project members has been reached that such information as tournament or trophy victories should be included in the article, and certain cases (such as the Rugby World Cup) the team's infbox.

[edit] Summarise and link

Particularly when writing history of rugby union, be careful not to duplicate information. The standard way to deal with possibly duplicate information is to keep one major source of that information and wherever else it is useful, summarise and link to it, in the following manner.

  1. Place the link under the heading of the section you are writing and before any text.
  2. Use {{main}}, like this {{main|Article name here}}. It will appear like this:
Main article: Article name here
  1. If necessary or relevant, also link to a specific section in the article

You can see an example here.

However, it may be that yours is a complicated subject and for the reader to get the whole picture with as little reading as possible, it is recommended you write light paragraphs that link to the relevant articles in the text.

[edit] Referencing

When adding information/statistics, particularly regarding popularity, be sure to add a reference, by adding this after it (using Wikipedia as an example:

<ref name=wiki1>{{cite web | publisher=wikipedia.org | title=Main page of Wikipedia | url=http://www.en.wikipedia.org/main| accessdate=1 April | accessyear=2006}}</ref>

or for a news site:

<ref name=news1>{{cite news | publisher=news.com | title=Good news article | url=http://www.news.com| accessdate=2007-01-01 | date=[[2006-12-12]] |last=Smith |first=John}}</ref>

  • Be sure to change all the names, publishers, titles, urls, and access dates to your specific reference.

Then, put a references section at the bottom of the page, but not below the external links. Like this:

==References==

{{reflist}}

If you are using the same source a few paragraphs later, re-reference like this:

<ref name=wiki1/>

    • Reference links correctly (see above).
