[edit] Redwall
[edit] Matthias
Matthias is the main character and hero in the first book of the Redwall series. He also appears or is mentioned in several subsequent books. He is the father of Mattimeo (the hero of the third book, Mattimeo), and grandfather of Martin, named for the legendary Martin the Warrior, a major figure in The Pearls of Lutra.
[edit] Methuselah
Methusaleh is an old mouse in the Brian Jacques novel Redwall. He aids Matthias in the finding of the sword of Martin the Warrior but is later kill by the fox Chickenhound. He also found the poem behind the tapestry which lead to clue and found Martian the warrior's tomb, sword, and shield.
"Aged" is correct; Methuselah is the oldest member of Redwall, hence his name. He has seen many an Abbot the Summer of the Late Rose thrice; and has spent untold years studying the languages of all animals, as well as the history of Redwall and Mossflower Country. He is a Recorder, and therefore the Gatekeeper, because the two positions have remained together since the foundation of the Abbey. Only after many years is the Recorder separated from the Gates. Methuselah took a special interest in the saga of Martin the Warrior, consequently taking interest in Matthias, in whom he saw many of the traits that distinguish a hero.
Methuselah met his death in the fulfillment of his duty, in that he was restoring a tear in the tapestry of Martin the Warrior when Chickenhound (later Slagar) attacked and killed him.
Later, one of the two new Redwall bells was named after Methuselah, in his remembrance.
Methuselah was voiced by Colin Bean in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Cluny the Scourge
Cluny the Scourge is the antagonist in the novel Redwall by Brian Jacques. He is an evil rat leader with an eye patch and a poisonous barb on his tail, which is physically used as a whip (or in some cases, a fifth limb). Cluny is plagued in his dreams by the guardian spirit of Redwall, Martin the Warrior. According to the first chapters of the book, Cluny the Scourge is said to be a Portuguese rat. This is one of the few references to the human world in the whole series.
Cluny was originally a searat, but came ashore with his army seeking plunder and destruction. His atrocities were told about across the land, though most believed him a story for frightening children. He committed many crimes, including the death of Matthias' family (TV series). He came to Mossflower country seeking to take over, wanting to make Redwall into "Cluny's Castle". He expected little difficulty in defeating the inexperienced Redwallers, but was thwarted time and time again by their bravery and ingenuity.
Cluny's efforts were further hampered by nightmares of Martin the Warrior. Cluny kept envisioning the warrior mouse, often with some other fell image with him, such as Cluny's dead soldier or the serpent Asmodeus. Despite this, Cluny pressed on. However, his plans - which included a battering ram, tunneling, getting onto the walls using a siege tower or plank stretched from a tree, and stealing the tapestry of Martin the Warrior - all failed.
Cluny eventually managed to get into Redwall by threatening the family of a dormouse he had captured. A dormouse snuck into Redwall and opened the main gate while everyone else was asleep. Cluny's horde broke in, capturing the defenders and taking over. Cluny was about to kill Abbot Mortimer when Matthias, having gone journeying to find the Sword of Martin, attacked with an army of Guosim shrews and Sparra. Cluny's horde was defeated, and Cluny himself perished at the warrior's hand, when Matthias cut down the Joseph Bell, which crushed Cluny to death.
Cluny is portrayed as a good general and a fine tactician and is one of the three vermin invaders ever to make it into the Great Hall of the Abbey (the others being the raven General Ironbeak in Mattimeo and the Marlfoxes of Marlfox) and the only one to invade "en masse", but he is still driven out by the Redwallers in the end. Cluny was a savage and skilled fighter (he was said to have slain a pike) and even Matthias the Warrior could not best him physically. He was only killed when he is crushed by the Joseph Bell of Redwall Abbey while fighting the mouse hero. His main weapon was his tail, from which he took the name Scourge, but in his battle with Matthias he wielded a metal club. His main outfit for battle was a set of armor with the horns of a stag beetle attached to the helmet.
Cluny is voiced on the TV series by Diego Matamoros and by Jason Mulhearn in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Constance
Badger Mother in the time of Matthias, Constance was a steadfast presence in the face of menaces like Cluny the Scourge and General Ironbeak. She assisted Matthias in the defense of Redwall against Cluny's hordes, and came up with several plans to counter him.
When Matthias and the other warriors of Redwall left in search of Slagar, Constance was left in charge of the Abbey's defenses. General Ironbeak came calling, and Constance was able to defeat him, killing his crow seer Mangiz. When Matthias' company returned to Redwall, she became firm friends with Orlando the Axe. She was also the first Badger Mother to groom her successor.
[edit] Jess Squirrel
Jess Squirrel, was a pretty, young, kind, red squirrel mother of Sam Squirrel, excellent at leaping in high distances, & tree climber. She was smart, generous, having a good sense of humor. good at being a warrior & became good friends with Basil Stag Hare. She appeared in Redwall & Mattimeo
[edit] Basil Stag Hare
A lively Hare who thinks he is a Stag! He befriends Matthias in Mossflower and becomes part of Redwall's army and moves in there. He is great friends with Jess Squirrel.
[edit] Sela
Sela the Vixen, mother of Chickenhound played as a double dealing spy along with her son & was a healer fox. She spied on Cluny the Scourge taking his fake plans, then stealing some valuables from Redwall. But was then caught by Constance & was sent to her death by Cluny's soldiers when the creatures at Redwall, & Cluny found out that she was a double spy & a traitor.
[edit] Chickenhound
Chickenhound the fox, son of Sela the Vixen (later Slagar the Cruel) played as a double dealing spy. He & Sela spied on Cluny the Scourge, taking his fake battle plans & outfoxed the two foxes & by receiving them to Constance. While he stole some valuables from Redwall then attacked Methusela & killed him. Chickenhound's mother then died when the creatures at Redwall, & Cluny found out that she was a double spy & a traitor. Chickenhound easily escaped from Redwall when they locked him up in the infirmary. Then also was bitten by Asmodeues. Chickenhound luckily survived, but then went insane from the venom in process a bit. He later became a slaver & became Slagar the Cruel.
[edit] Squire Julian Gingivere
Squire Gingivere, Julian, was possibly a descendant of the Squire Gingivere from the book Mossflower. Living in a barn some distance from Redwall, Julian was odd among cats in the fact that he was a vegetarian. He lived with the owl Captain Snow, but the owl's appetite for meat and their conflicting personalities led to a disagreement and then separation.
During his search for Snow, young Matthias of Redwall came across Julian. The two became friends, and Julian took Matthias to see Snow. After Matthias learned what he wanted, he set out after Asmodeus. He later came back to see Julian, and brought him along to meet Captain Snow. Extracting an apology from Snow, Matthias soon had the two back together, the disagreement forgotten. Julian later came with Snow to Redwall, where they killed the last members of Cluny the Scourge's horde as they tried to escape. He was voiced by Paul Denemy in the full-cast audiobook, and on the animated TV series by Keith Knight.
[edit] Captain Snow
He meets Matthias in Mossflower and tells him where to find the sword of Martin the worrior (in the quarry where Asmodeus lives). When Matthias comes back with the sword he is forced to promise never to eat a mouse or shrew ever again. he is also forced to apologize to Squire Gingivere (with whom he reconciles).
[edit] Asmodeus
Asmodeus Poisonteeth was a giant male adder who lived in an old sandstone quarry north-east of Redwall Abbey in Redwall, a fantasy novel by Brian Jacques. He was also called "Giant Ice Eyes" by the shrews due to his possession of hypnotic powers. He had been known to hiss his name which, according to one of Cluny's soldiers, is that of the devil. For several years he had possessed the sword of Martin the Warrior, which he took from the sparrow king. The mouse Matthias decapitated Asmodeus with Martin's sword.
In the book Outcast of Redwall, it is shown that the quarry was filled with adders before Asmodeus lived there, perhaps his ancestors. It is also revealed in the book Triss that Brockhall, abandoned after the construction of Redwall, has become the residence of adders, possibly descendants of Asmodeus.
Asmodeus was indirectly responsible for the events of Mattimeo, as he bit Chickenhound, the fox. Chickenhound survived, going insane from the venom in the process, and adopting the identity of Slagar the Cruel.
Asmodeus killed Cluny's captain Ragear, and the shrew named Guosim.
Asmodeus is voiced in the TV series by David Hemblen and by Nick Baty in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] King Bull Sparra
Ruler of the Sparra who nest in Redwall Abbey's roof spaces, King Bull was a fierce tyrant. King Bull lost the Sword of Martin to the serpent Asmodeus. Since then, he was driven mad by a desire to recover it. His madness led to his end when Matthias, a Redwall mouse, came seeking the sword. After keeping the mouse prisoner, King Bull was tricked into leaving. Upon his return, he saw Matthias escaping. The two became locked in battle, and fell into Redwall Abbey's pond. King Bull drowned, and his daughter Warbeak became the new Sparra Queen. He was voiced by Ben Campbell on the animated TV series and by Billy Maher in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Warbeak
A sparrow warrior who befriended Matthias, Warbeak was a vicious fighter. The two bickered at first, but in time established a friendship. Following the death of King Bull Sparra, Warbeak took his place as queen. She led the Sparra against the forces of Cluny the Scourge. Sadly, she later fell in battle against a horde of rats, and was put to rest by her friend in Mattimeo.
Warbeak's only living family was her mother, Dunwing, her father having been killed by Asmodeus. On the animated TV series, she was voiced by Tracey Moore; in the audiobooks, she was played by Eithne Brown in Redwall and by Keddy Sutton in Mattimeo.
[edit] Mortimer
A mouse who was the Abbot of Redwall during the time when it was menaced by Cluny the Scourge. Mortimer was a kind old mouse, and rather fond of Matthias. He led the Abbey well, but was sadly wounded fatally during the final battle against Cluny. As he lay on his deathbed, he made several declarations, which included appointing his successor Mordalfus and decreeing the marriage of Matthias to Cornflower. He was voiced by Chris Wiggins on the animated TV series and in the full-cast audiobook by Geoff Lavelle.
[edit] Cornflower
Cornflower was the pretty young fieldmouse whom Matthias fell in love with in the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fieldmouse, the wife of Matthias, mother of Mattimeo and grandmother of Martin the Second. She was a skilled cook and often wore headbands.
Template:Spoiler In Redwall, Cornflower was of great help to Redwall Abbey during the Late Rose Summer War and was able to fend off Cluny the Scourge during one of his attacks. She threw a lantern onto his siege tower which caused it to burst into flames.
In Mattimeo, when Redwall was under attack by General Ironbeak, Cornflower came up with an idea to dress up as the ghost of Martin the Warrior to scare the superstitious birds. Her plan worked, and the rooks and magpies became extremely frightened. She would have continued her masquerade, but Abbot Mordalfus then told her to stop because she could have been killed.
Matthias and Mattimeo still were not home yet, and Cornflower began to get very worried. But finally, as she was staring out from the walltop, she saw them coming back and ran down to greet them.
She was voiced by Rachel Murphy in the full-cast audiobook of Redwall and by Alison Pill and Melissa McIntyre in the television series of Redwall and Mattimeo, respectively.
[edit] Mordalfus
Originally known simply as Brother Alf, Mordalfus was the Abbey Fishermouse, responsible for catching a fish from the pond as part of annual feasts. He was often assisted in this by young Matthias, who added his youthful energy to Mordalfus' expertise. After Abbot Mortimer was wounded, he appointed Mordalfus as his successor.
Eight seasons later, Mordalfus was still ruler of Redwall when many of the Abbey's children, including Matthias' son Mattimeo, were kidnapped by Slagar the Cruel. After Matthias departed in search of them, Mordalfus was forced to contend with the forces of General Ironbeak. However, thanks to the brave efforts of his Redwallers, the evil raven was defeated, and Mordalfus later welcomed Matthias and his friends home.
Mordalfus was voiced by John Stocker on the animated TV series; in the full-cast audiobooks he was voiced by Nick Baty (as Brother Alf) in Redwall and by Gordon Hall in Mattimeo.
[edit] Mossflower
[edit] Martin the Warrior
-The brave young warrior mouse who comes to Mossflower and is imprisoned briefly by Tsarmina. Tsarmina broke his fathers sword and forced Martin to wear it around his neck. Martin later commenced on a journey to find Boar the Fighter with two commrads, trying to bring the badger back. After this journey, Martin returns to kill Tsarmina and free all of mossflower. In the process, Boar remaid his sword, still with the original hilt, out of metal from a fallen asteroid in Salamandastron's great forge.
[edit] Barkstripe
The mate of Bella of Brockhall, Barkstripe was the father of Sunflash the Mace. Barkstripe came to dwell in Mossflower with Bella after the wanderings of their youth, taking charge from Bella's father Boar the Fighter. However, Barkstripe's peaceful reign ended when Verdauga Greeneyes came and took over the castle of Kotir and the surrounding territory. Barkstripe led a band of resistance fighters against the wildcat, but being more farmer than warrior, was killed.
Barkstripe later appeared to Sunflash in a vision with Boar and Lord Brocktree, preventing Sunflash from passing through the gates of the Dark Forest. He told Sunflash that his time was not done, and he needed to take up the mantle of his forefathers and become Badger Lord of Salamandastron.
[edit] Bella of Brockhall
Daughter of Boar the Fighter, Bella was a badger who lived in the ancient keep of her Mossflower ancestors, Brockhall. Like many badgers, she took to wandering in her youth, and returned home with her mate Barkstripe. Around that time, Boar left for Salamandastron, leaving Barkstripe and Bella to rule in his stead. Bella lived a happy life, and gave birth to a son, Sunflash the Mace.
Bella's family was shattered by the arrival of Verdauga Greeneyes, a foul wildcat conqueror and brother of Ungatt Trunn. Verdauga took over the fortress of Kotir, and slew Barkstripe and a large number of those who rebelled against him. To make things worse, Sunflash disappeared, seemingly off to avenge his father, and was presumed dead when he failed to reappear. Bella took refuge at Brockhall, and became one of the leaders of Corim, the resistance to Verdauga and his vermin horde.
For many seasons Bella remained in hiding, striking at the wildcat from the shadows. However, the tenuous period came to an end with the arrival of Martin the Warrior. At this time, Verdauga was poisoned by his daughter Tsarmina, who threw her brother Gingivere in prison and took over Kotir. With Martin's assistance, the Corim stepped up their conflict with the fortress. However, this was repaid, for after his fight with Tsarmina, Martin would have died had it not been for Bella getting him to the ancient healer in a time for she ran faster and for more time than would have killed any other creature.
With assistance from Gonff the Mousethief and Dinny, Bella and Martin uncovered a map to Salamandastron. Believing her father Boar to be alive, and the only one who could lead the Corim to victory, she sent Martin and a small group out to find the mountain. In the meanwhile, she continued battling Tsarmina's forces. Martin eventually returned with reinforcements, and Tsarmina's regime ended.
Bella was also a good friend to Abbess Germaine, and helped her to design and build Redwall Abbey. Bella became the first Badger Mother, watching over the young ones and assisting in any way she could. Bella lived longer than any of her former comrades, becoming the oldest known badger in history. She gave the name Veil to the son of Swartt Sixclaw, and was reunited with her son Sunflash after so many years. He stayed with her for several seasons, before she finally passed on.
[edit] Boar the Fighter
A legendary warrior, son of Lord Brocktree, Boar the Fighter fathered Bella of Brockhall. After years of ruling Mossflower, he departed for Salamandastron, leaving the woodlands in the charge of his son-in-law, Barkstripe. However, after Boar's absence, the wildcats took over; the battle ended in Barkstripe's death.
When Martin the Warrior came to Mossflower some time later, he set out to find Boar to seek his aid against the wildcats. Boar instructed Martin and his companions, providing them with weapons and reforging Martin's sword. He later saw his fate written on the walls of Salamandastron. Accompanied by Martin and his friends and the hares of Salandastron, Boar did battle with a horde of sea rats led by his sworn enemy Ripfang.
During that last battle, Boar was overtaken by the Bloodwrath. He slew many a corsair, but at the cost of his own life. However, Martin fulfilled his promise to Boar and saved Mossflower, and Boar's grandson Sunflash the Mace later came to take his grandfather's place in the halls of Salamandastron. He also made an appearance from Dark Forest in Outcast of Redwall, joining his father in preventing Sunflash's death.
[edit] Dinny
Young Dinny was the grandson of Old Dinny and had inherited all of his grandsire's talents. He was an excellent digger and the grandfather of Togget. Dinny was also a good thinker, assisting with the riddles that Gonff the Mousethief and Martin the Warrior had to solve to get to Salamandastron. He accompanied them on their journey, and helped them out of many tight spots. Dinny also made friends among the Bat Mountpit tribe. They considered him to be a fat bat with no wings. Dinny liked the idea, reasoning that he could "fly through the earth".
Later on, when the three friends were stuck in the Screamhole, he exercised his digging ability when he dug almost straight up, retrieved a large net, and allowed them all to escape. When Dinny returned to Mossflower Woods, he found great merriment in triggering the ballista, which was built by Timballisto in the final attack on Kotir. He later became the first Foremole of Redwall Abbey.
[edit] Gingivere
Gingivere was a wildcat, son of Verdauga Greeneyes, brother of Tsarmina, and nephew of Ungatt Trunn. Gingivere was a gentle, honorable creature, unlike his sister. When Martin the Warrior was captured by a Kotir patrol and brought before Verdauga, Gingivere advised his father to have Martin escorted to the edge of Mossflower Woods and told never to return. Not willing to allow Gingivere to take the throne she coveted, Tsarmina framed him for the poisoning of their father, which she herself orchestrated. Gingivere was locked up, and his name was forbidden from speech in Kotir. Gingivere clearly saw who was truly guilty, and accused his sister of the murder.
In the time that followed, Gingivere became gaunt and despairing. Fortunately, his positivity was restored when he found himself neighbored by the young hedgehogs Ferdy and Coggs. Amused by the little creatures' childishness, and their calling him Uncle, Gingivere soon became hopeful, and even orchestrated an arrangement with his sisters' enemies to escape with the two young hogs. Their escape came in the form of the otter disguise master known as the Mask, who helped them break out. Unfortunately, Mask was fatally wounded, and died before they could make it back. Feeling duty bound to the otter for saving him and his young friends, Gingivere carried the limp form to where it could be put to rest.
After a short time spent with the resistance, Gingivere departed, not wanting to increase Tsarmina's determination to destroy them with his presence. After journeying for a time, he met a beautiful female cat, Sandingomm, and settled down with her. Becoming a farmer, Gingivere sheltered the children and non-fighters of the resistance when they came seeking refuge.
[edit] Gonff the Mousethief
Gonff the Mousethief is an anthropomorphic mouse from the Redwall book series by Brian Jacques. Gonff was voiced by Dave Foode in the full-cast audiobook of Mossflower. The character of Gonff is based on the author Brian Jacques as a young boy.
Known as the Prince of Mousethieves, a troublemaker and composer of songs and poems, Gonff was truly a humorous character. An orphaned woodland mouse in the time when Mossflower was dominated by Verdauga Greeneyes, Gonff was raised by and later became a member of the Corim, the resistance to the wildcat's tyranny. With skills of stealth and mimicry learned from just about every type of woodland creature, mainly the otters, whom Gonff even went so far as to mimic in speech, he regularly raided the larders of Castle Kotir.
Eventually, Gonff was caught and thrown in a cell with Martin the Warrior. With help from the Corim, the two escaped and became best friends, Gonff always following along on Martin's journeys. Upon returning to the Corim camp, Gonff fell in love with a lovely mouse from Loamhedge Abbey named Columbine. Gonff accompanied Martin on the journey to Salamandastron, and upon their return and victory over Tsarmina, Verdauga's daughter, he married Columbine.
The two took up residence at Redwall Abbey, along with their son, a chip off his father's block. Gonff accompanied Martin and several others on another journey, this time to learn the fate of Martin's father, Luke the Warrior. Along the way, they met an orphan squirrel named Chugger, whom Gonff later adopted.
Gonff's line would continue for some years, his heroic qualities expressing themselves in his descendant Dandin the Sword Carrier, and Bryony, his great-granddaughter. Gonff rarely participated in battle, his best weapon being his wit. He was friendly with all decent Mossflower residents, knowing many of their customs and speaking in their manners. He was also a player of the reed flute, though he was once offered a wooden one crafted by Abbess Germaine. He declined, and the flute later passed on to Dandin.
The following is a song Gonff wrote in Mossflower:
I'm a mouse with a very long tail,
With a heart and voice to match.
I've escaped from the pussycats gaol.
They'll find me hard to catch.
So, away, through the grass, the flow'rs and leaves,
Like smoke on the breeze, the Prince of Thieves.
Let's cheer for the day when we will see
The Mossflower country safe and free.
[edit] Log a Log Big Club
He first appeared in Mossflower as a companion of Martin, Gonff, and Dinny on their quest to Salamandastron. At the time, he and most of the other shrews from his village were captured by searats. He was the only one to escape, so he went back home, plotting revenge. Thanks to his new friends and the hares of Salamandastron, he was able to rescue some of the surviving shrews from Cap'n Ripfang's ship. He also appeared in The Legend of Luke as Furmo, who accompanied Martin and his friends to the northlands to seek out information on Martin's father, Luke.
[edit] Tsarmina
Tsarmina is an anthropomorphic wildcat, daughter of Verdauga Greeneyes, niece of Ungatt Trunn, and sister to Squire Gingivere. She appears in the book Mossflower, the second novel in the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
Tsarmina was a scheming, wicked female, who lacked her father's honor and her brother's fairness. When Martin the Warrior was brought before them, she demanded his execution, but her father had him imprisoned instead, to be released, escorted to the edge of their territory, and given back his sword at a later time. Tsarmina broke the weapon's blade, tying a rope around the handle and placing it about Martin's neck as a sign of his encounter with them. Enraged, Martin swore to kill her.
Murder was committed soon after, but not by Martin. Tsarmina, conspiring with her father's treacherous advisors, poisoned Verdauga and framed Gingivere for it. Taking over as queen of Kotir, she locked up her brother and sought to enforce her rule. However, she met resistance in the form of the Corim, the organization that was set up to oppose her and her father.
Tsarmina's plans were thwarted time and again by the determined woodlanders. She found herself menaced by them, treacherous members of her own troops, and an old eagle named Argulor. Things were made worse as Martin and Gingivere escaped, leaving her looking foolish. As time went on, her sanity began to decay, and she began thinking that her brother was behind everything. She also kept imagining herself drowning in water, which filled her with terror. Her empire crumbled when her enemies flooded Castle Kotir and destroyed her forces. She met Martin in one-on-one combat, and wounded him drastically. However, he stubbornly refused to submit, and drove her into the lake created by Kotir's flooding, causing her nightmare to become real.
[edit] Verdauga Greeneyes
Verdauga Greeneyes is an anthropomorphic wildcat in the book Mossflower from the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. Verdauga was voiced by Liam Tobin in the full-cast audiobook. The name "Verdauga" is a Latin derivation meaning "green eyes."
Verdauga was a warlord of Mossflower Woods, who ruled the fortress Kotir with the Thousand Eye Army. He was the son of Highland King Mortspear, the younger brother of Ungatt Trunn, and the father of Tsarmina and Gingivere. He hailed from the far north and settled in the abandoned fortress of Kotir to rule the native woodlanders for many seasons.
A leader of flair, his many titles included Master of the Thousand Eyes, Lord of Mossflower, Slayer of Enemies, and Ruler of Kotir. Late in his old age he suffered from an unknown illness and was tricked and poisoned by the joint efforts of his healer, Fortunata, and his treacherous daughter, Tsarmina, who took over his position.
Verdauga is known to be one of the more merciful of evil warlords and certainly a just ruler, as he spared the life of Martin the Warrior after having his guards bring him to Kotir for trespassing. Despite his mercy towards Martin, in previous years he was the opposite, having driven the tribe of Luke the Warrior out of St. Ninian's.
[edit] Mattimeo
[edit] Auma
Daughter of Orlando the Axe, Auma was left with a single parent when her mother Brockrose died. Despite this tragedy, Auma lived happily with her father, happy with his good humor. She was also very fond of mountain plant flowers, which Orlando brought her whenever he could. He also taught her all about their home in the Western Plains and in the nearby mountains.
Auma was abducted by Slagar the Cruel, prompting her father to pursue the fox with a vengeance. Along the way to the ruins of Loamhedge Abbey, Auma met and became friends with fellow captive Mattimeo of Redwall. The two worked together, helping their friends whenever they could, and always trying to leave signs for their searching parents.
Eventually, Auma and the others were imprisoned in the kingdom of Malkariss. However, during the battle between Matthias' allies and the rat hordes of Malkariss, Auma and co. were freed by a band of Guosim shrews. Joining her father in battle with her inherent strength, Auma made a fierce foe in opposition to the vermin. After the company won, Auma and her father came to live at Redwall. She was taught by Constance the Badger Mother, and became the new Mother when Constance passed on.
[edit] Basil Stag Hare
After the defeat of Cluny, Basil Stag Hare moved into Redwall Abbey, and assisted Matthias in rescuing kidnapped Redwallers from Slagar the Cruel.
[edit] Cornflower
Cornflower is an anthropomorphic mouse in the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques. She was voiced by Rachel Murphy in the full-cast audiobook of Redwall and by Alison Pill and Melissa McIntyre in the television series of Redwall and Mattimeo, respectively.
[edit] Constance
When Matthias and the other warriors of Redwall left in search of Slagar, Constance was left in charge of the Abbey's defenses. General Ironbeak came calling, and Constance was able to defeat him, killing his crow seer Mangiz. When Matthias' company returned to Redwall, she became firm friends with Orlando the Axe. She was also the first Badger Mother to groom her successor.
[edit] General Ironbeak
A large raven from the harsh northlands, General Ironbeak came south and attempted to conquer Redwall Abbey. He met opposition in the form of Redwall's hardy residents, most particularly Cornflower and Constance Badger. Not about to give up, General Ironbeak pressed his efforts.
Ironbeak was a ruthless fighter and clever strategist, commanding an army of rooks, magpies and similar birds. His closest ally was his crow Seer, Mangiz. He fought long and hard, determined to claim his "red stone house." However, most of his plans, such as kidnapping several Redwallers, stealing the Redwall tapestry, and imprisoning Constance proved useless.
The main reason for the repeated thwarting of Ironbeak's plans was the Redwallers' ingenious tactics. Diversionary operations, sneak attacks, sleeping potions, and the repeated appearance of the 'ghost' of Martin the Warrior served to demoralize the invaders and push Ironbeak into fits of rage. His bird soldiers continued to infuriate him with tales that he did not believe, having not witnessed them himself.
Eventually, Ironbeak managed to break through the Redwallers' last defenses and capture most of them. Threatening the Abbot, he was attacked by a Sister of Redwall. About to kill her, he received a great shock: out of Redwall's cellars came flying the "earthcrawlers'" newest ally and Ironbeak's worst nightmare, a massive bird named Stryk Redkite. Overwhelmed by her superior size and power, Ironbeak was soon slain.
Ironbeak was voiced by Wayne Best on the animated TV series and by Paul Greene in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Jess the Squirrel
When Jess's son was kidnapped by Slagar the Cruel, she set out with Matthias and Basil Stag Hare to pursue the fox and fought in the battle in the underground city of Malkariss.
[edit] Matthias
See "above" also (this will be formatted later)
In the Summer of the Golden Plain, Mattimeo and his friends were taken by Slagar the Cruel, an evil fox who wanted revenge on the Abbey and its Warrior. Matthias vowed that he would find his son and all the missing young ones. He followed the slave trail to the underground kingdom of Malkariss.
Matthias and the woodlanders attacked the Blackrobe Rats of Malkariss. After what was meant to be a one on one battle with the Wearet, Matthias fell from a great ledge in the underground kingdom and was believed to be dead. Down below the fighting Matthias freed Malkariss' slaves and turned them into his own army. While he worked his way back up to the ledge Matthias heard his son, Mattimeo, calling to him. In a mad charge to be reunited with him it says Matthias fought like a berserker, and that nothing could stand in his way. This could be evidence that Matthias was overcome by the Bloodwrath, something that is only known to have come upon a very small number of other creatures that were not badgers. Matthias was reunited with Mattimeo.
Outside, the group was confronted by Slagar, who had survived the massive cave-in of Malkariss. In a rage, Matthias and Orlando the Axe ran after him. Neither were able to kill him though, as Slagar stumbled and fell to his death in an old well.
Matthias was a skilled warrior, who wielded the Sword of Martin as his main weapon. He also used a sling, and before obtaining the sword, a stave.
He eventually died of old age and his position was passed on to his son Mattimeo who in turn passed it on to Martin the Second.
[edit] Mattimeo
Mattimeo was the son of Matthias and Cornflower at Redwall Abbey. His full name was "Matthias Methuselah Mortimer". He was mischievous and considered to be spoiled in his youth; Mattimeo was always misbehaving, and often got into fights with a young rat staying at the Abbey named Vitch. This caused friction between Mattimeo and his elders, though Mattimeo tried to behave.
Mattimeo was later kidnapped, along with several other young Redwallers, by the evil fox Slagar. The fox, seeking vengeance on Matthias and to procure slaves for his employer, took Mattimeo captive and told him his version of events that led to the horrible disfiguration of his face. Whilst traveling south with the slave band, Mattimeo became good friends with the young badger Auma, daughter of Orlando the Axe.
During the journey, Mattimeo changed from the spoiled brat he had been into a true warrior, ready to do anything to help his friends. This showed as he vowed to kill Slagar and encouraged the less hardy captives. Mattimeo later fought alongside his friends and father against the evil armies of Malkariss. They triumphed and returned to Redwall. Some seasons later, Mattimeo became Champion of Redwall and married his childhood friend Tess Churchmouse. They named their son Martin the Second after being advised by Cornflower Fieldmouse. After his father retired, Mattimeo took up the sword of Martin the Warrior and became the new Abbey Warrior.
It is said he died peacefully of old age, but this is unconfirmed.
[edit] Orlando the Axe
Warrior Lord of the Western Plains, Orlando wields the weapon of his name, a massive battleaxe. He has as a battlecry the ancient warcall of badgers and hares, "Eulalia!" His only known of family are his deceased wife Brockrose and his daughter, Auma. Living near the mountains, Orlando's only companion was Auma. In the years before he came to Redwall, he became a skilled cook, though he would never let anyone besides Auma know, fearing that his acquaintances would think he was going soft.
Orlando's happy life was shattered when Slagar came to the plains. Orlando, fearing no beast, ignored the fox and his band, but unwittingly as he passed by them one day, he left a trail back to his home. Orlando returned to find his home in ruins, with Auma gone. Realizing that it was the work of Slagar, Orlando vowed to hunt the slaver to the end of his days, nearly becoming maddened by the Bloodwrath.
Setting out after Slagar, Orlando found himself in Mossflower Woods. After traveling some distance and becoming lost, he ran afoul of a family of hedgehogs, accusing him of kidnapping one of their children. It was this strange sight that greeted Matthias of Redwall and his companions as they came upon Orlando during their own hunt for Slagar.
Realizing that their goals were common, as was their enemy, Orlando and Matthias joined forces. The two became fast friends of similar spirit, the only contention between them the dispute as to which of them would kill Slagar. Orlando's good humor and fighting ferocity were a welcome addition to the band of Slagar's enemies. Despite the occasional disadvantage of his large size, he made friends with the group.
After many adventures, the group arrived in the realm of Malkariss. Orlando attacked the creature's followers with utter ferocity. Many fell before Orlando's weapon, including the slavemaster Wearet, whom Orlando slew after his seeming murder of Matthias. Reuniting with Auma and the other young ones, along with a host of other allies, Orlando defeated Malkariss' horde. As it had turned out, Malkaris was just an old, deformed polecat.
With the battle won, Orlando and Matthias took it upon themselves to destroy the statue of Malkariss. However, an earthquake seemingly buried them, only for a geyser to send them flying through the air. Encountering Slagar, Orlando and Matthias charged at him, only to see Slagar fall into a underground well and die.
Along with Matthias, his newfound friends and the freed slaves of Malkariss, Orlando came to live at Redwall Abbey. He became a good friend to Constance, and the two were seldom apart. During the time he spent at Redwall, his axe hung in the Great Hall. Some years later, Orlando left to go to Salamandastron. This was mentioned by Rollo the Recorder in The Pearls of Lutra. It is unknown if he assumed the title of Badger Lord, as the tomb of the Badger Lords has not been revisited since before then and he has not been mentioned by any Badger Lords after that period of time.
[edit] Slagar the Cruel
Slagar the Cruel (born Chickenhound) is a villainous anthropomorphic fox in the book Mattimeo from the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
He has many hidden plans and reasons which he only reveals by his own free will. Although only named in one book, he also appears in another book from the same series, adding to his mysterious history. Although he is the main villain, he himself is second to other, greater villains in all but his own plans. His most characteristic trait is his desire for revenge and his pursuit of it, leaving death and misery in its wake. He was voiced by Simon Smithies in the full-cast audiobook of Redwall (as Chickenhound) and by Paul Braithwaite in Mattimeo, and by Tim Curry in the animated series.
Slagar revealed himself as Chickenhound, the young fox from Redwall, to Mattimeo during their journey. He gave Mattimeo a biased story in which he was an innocent youngster whom the Redwallers were responsible for injuring, and he had personified them in Matthias. In truth, he was the son of the healer-vixen Sela. His mother was a traitor to both the horde of Cluny the Scourge they were employed by, and the Redwall creatures who took them in, to exploit the most benefit from each side. Chickenhound was Sela's assistant in her plans.
Cluny suspected the foxes were planning to double-cross him, and set a trap to expose them. They were caught, and Cluny ordered their execution by spearing. Sela was slain, but Chickenhound survived and dragged himself wounded to Redwall. He was cared for in the infimary, and told the Redwallers about Cluny's plans to tunnel into the abbey, an act that quite likely saved Redwall from being conquered. After he recovered, he began to believe that he was being imprisoned and escaped, stealing valuables on his way out. Pursued by the Redwallers, he accidentally killed an old mouse named Methuselah in his haste to escape.
Running for his life, Chickenhound hid in an old log where Asmodeus Poisonteeth found and bit him, ripping away half the skin on his face. Chickenhound escaped from the snake's lair and nursed himself back to health with the 'art of the healers'. His face remained horribly disfigured by the wound, and so Chickenhound began wearing a harlequin hood to conceal it. His mind was warped by the venom, and he began to believe the Redwallers responsible for his condition. Eventually he renamed himself - becoming Slagar the Cruel - and began to plot his revenge.
Slagar was a prolific slaver. This also demonstrated that although his most driving ultimatum was his revenge on Redwall, he also had some other plan for collecting the slaves. Eventually, it is discovered that he acts as a slaver for Malkariss, a speaking statue which contained a prideful polecat, in an underground city of rats. Slagar had been slaving for many seasons before he came to Redwall, as he had allied with Malkariss to provide him with new slaves. He had become infamous even before his attempt at Redwall and therefore, although not in view of Redwall, had made slaving a practice, but not his future.
Slagar's future, as he determined it, was the command of the evil realm of Malkariss within the ruins of old Loamhedge, the abbey that preceded Redwall. His plans centered on bringing the unfortunate young slaves to Malkariss, to align himself with the evil forces within. The lust for sweet revenge drove him on to kidnapping Mattimeo and the Redwall young ones, but his insatiable hunger for power - and having his reward delayed - drove him to plot further to overthrow his master and rule the above and the below lands. Yet, before he could do this, the warriors of Redwall and Mossflower destroyed Malkariss and freed the slaves. Slagar met with the bitter fate of being chased until he fell down a well leading into the depths of the earth, dying a coward as did many other villains in the Redwall series.
[edit] Stryk Redkite
One of the great red kites who live in the mountains, Stryk is wounded in a rockslide. With an injured wing, she flies to Redwall, seeking help. Upon arriving, she is set upon by the invading forces of General Ironbeak, but saved by the Redwallers. The stubborn bird refuses to let herself be treated, but is unfortunately Drugged by Sister May, a Redwall mouse she grows to be quite fond of and called "Sissimay."
Stryk recovers just in time to save the captured Redwallers from General Ironbeak. Flying into battle, she slays the unfortunate General by striking at him,(hence her name) and helps drive away his remaining forces. She later, unfortunately, departs, but comes back with a mate named Skine and an eggchick. To Sister May's delight, the female is to be named after her, but she insists that her name be May and not "Sissimay."
Stryk is voiced by Ellen-Ray Hennessy on the animated TV series and by Nicky Mackay in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Mariel of Redwall
[edit] Salamandastron
[edit] Arula
Arula is a female mole from the Redwall series. She is one of the main characters in the book Salamandastron. She is the grandmother of Burrem, a Dibbun mole who listens to a story told by Dumble, who is a Dibbun himself in the novel.
Arula was the friend of Samkim the squirrel. After the stoats Dingeye and Thura killed Redwall's recorder, Brother Hal, and stole the Sword of Martin, Arula went with Samkim to retrieve the sword. She also buries Thura, the first animal killed by Dryditch Fever.
Arula is among the army led against Ferahgo the Assassin to aid Salamandastron's hares and Badger Lord, Urthstripe. She and the other troops are led by Urthwyte, the albino brother of Urthstripe.
Near the end of the novel, Arula discovers a spring of cold water deep in Salamandastron, making it invulnerable to siege.
[edit] Loambudd
Grandmother of Badger Lords Urthstripe the Strong and Urthwyte the Mighty, Loambudd was a fierce fighting badger in her youth. Loambudd was off on an errand when her son and daughter-in-law were killed by Ferahgo the Assassin. Upon returning to the home she shared with them, she found them dead and young Urthstripe missing. Taking charge of baby Urthwyte, she traveled far and wide, before finally settling on an island set on a massive lake with Urthwyte and an ancient squirrel. She was voiced by Beth Cassidy
Loambudd's exile ended when Mara, adoptive daughter of Urthstripe, came to the island with a band of Guossom shrews seeking an artifact that the simple Urthwyte had taken long before. Upon learning of her grandson's continued existence, and the fact that he was menaced by Ferahgo, Loambudd joined Urthwyte and Mara as they journeyed to Salamandastron. Despite their assistance, Urthstripe was killed by Ferahgo. Loambudd, recovering a badger medallion that had belonged to her son from the corpse of Ferahgo, placed it about Urthwyte's neck.
Loambudd stayed at Salamandastron the rest of her days, being the only one who could instruct Urthwyte in the ways of the Badger Lord.
[edit] Martin the Warrior
[edit] Felldoh
Felldoh is an anthropomorphic squirrel, one of the main characters in the book Martin the Warrior from the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. He was voiced by Ali Mukaddam in the animated series.
Felldoh was imprisoned by Badrang the Tyrant as an infant, along with his father, Barkjon. He grew up witnessing violent acts by Badrang, such as cold-blooded killings and beatings. As a result he was not sensitive to watching or committing violence. He also expressed a hatred of Badrang and swore he would one day escape Badrang's fort, Marshank, and personally kill the evil corsair. Just before the battle at the end of the book, Felldoh attempts to kill Badrang by beating him with a javelin, and nearly succeeds. Badrang, however, has his soldiers kill Felldoh. Felldoh's friends, who had decided to spy on him, rushed to his body and carried it away. Later, Barkjon tearfully says, "They can't hurt him now." Felldoh's death, along with the death of Laterose and others, was avenged when Martin the Warrior killed Badrang. Felldoh is currently the only non-badger character besides Martin the Warrior and Ranguvar Foeseeker in the series to exhibit Bloodwrath-like charateristics when he almost kills Badrang.
[edit] Ballaw
Ballaw was a very flamboyant hare, and was the main magician in the Rambling Rosehip Players. Like most hares, he was comical, intelligent, ruthless, clever, and hungry. Along with Roanoak, the RRP, and Brome and Felldoh disguised as obscure animals, he performed a show at Marshank by friendly order of Tramun Cloggs. They smuggle out half the slaves when they charge out. Later on in the story, he helps train the newly freed slaves in a small rebellion against Marshank, sadly losing Felldoh in the process. He was responsible for giving the rebel army, and the huge army under Martin's command at the final battle, its name of 'The Fur and Freedom Fighters'. After the great battle, when Rose was sadly put to eternal rest, he traveled along with the Rambing Rosehips, the freed slaves, and Roanoak to Noonvale. His death uncertain.
[edit] Tramun Clogg
Tramun Clogg is an anthropomorphic stoat from the Redwall novel series by Brian Jacques. He was voiced by John Stocker on the animated TV series, and by Dave Foode in the full-cast audiobook.
A pirate captain and associate of Badrang the Tyrant, Clogg commands the vessel Seascarab. Clogg's trademark is a massive pair of wooden clogs, and every available bit of hair on his body is braided. He worked with Badrang for an unknown time period before they became separated, Badrang going on to build Marshank.
Clogg later showed up at Marshank seeking slaves to crew his ship and revenge on his old crew mate. The two played at an alliance for a while, but each was seeking to put an end to the other. Clogg suffered much humiliation, having the Seascarab sunk and letting the Rambling Rosehip Players into Marshank where they stole away the slaves. Clogg chased after them, but failed to catch them.
Later, when conflict sprouted between the slavers and the Fur and Freedom Fighters - a resistance formed of former slaves and the Players - Clogg managed to trick his way into control of Marshank while Badrang was away. However, it was only temporary, as Badrang sneaked back in and put Clogg to work as a slave. Clogg continued to be a nuisance, weakening the morale of the vermin by making seemingly insane prophecies and ghostly voices.
After Badrang died at the hands of Martin the Warrior, Clogg planned to take Marshank as his own. It is unknown if he was able to do so, or if he had truly been driven mad and died. Whatever the end, he was never heard from again.
[edit] Badrang the Tyrant
Badrang the Tyrant is an anthropomorphic stoat and the main villain of Martin the Warrior from the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. Badrang's voice was provided in the animated series by Diego Matamoros and by Simon Smithies in the full-cast audiobook.
An old pirate captain, Badrang abandoned life at sea and began building a fortress known as Marshank. Capturing numerous slaves, including a young Martin the Warrior, he also stole the Sword of Martin. Badrang kept Martin captive for years, but eventually the young warrior escaped. Badrang then faced humiliation, as a group of traveling performers escaped with his slaves and his fortress was stolen from him by a rival stoat captain named Tramun Clogg.
Overcoming the odds, Badrang reclaimed Marshank, adding his rival's crew to his legion and putting the rival to work building the fortress. Badrang then came under siege, as a motley band of former slaves and traveling performers attacked Marshank. Not giving in, Badrang managed to slay one of the prime members.
Badrang's luck ran out when Martin returned from a long journey, an army of free creatures in tow. Overwhelming Marshank's defenses, the group threatened to slay Badrang. The desperate stoat took Rose of Noonvale captive, and in a battle with Martin, the young maiden was slain. Badrang met an ironic death, as Martin plunged the sword Badrang had so long held into the stoat's chest.
Badrang's main weapon was Luke the Warrior's sword. He was a cunning strategist who was not above fighting dirty, such as using poisoned weapons or killing his own lackeys.
[edit] Rowanoak
Rowanoak was a female badger and member of the Rambling Rosehip Players. Serving as cart puller and baritoness, she fought alongside her troupe and various others in the battle against Badrang the Tyrant and Tramun Clogg. After Badrang's death, Rowanoak became friends with Martin the Warrior, but later parted ways with him to live in Noonvale. She was voiced by Angela Heslop in the full-cast audiobook.
[edit] Laterose
Laterose, also commonly known as 'Rose,'was a very attractive, young female mousemaid from Noonvale. Her parents Urran Voh and Aria were the leaders of Noonvale at the time, and their only other child was Brome, who one day wandered away from Noonvale. Urran Voh and his wife sent Rose to go look for Brome, together with a friendly Mole named Grumm. They realized that Brome had been captured by Badrang the Tyrant, improsoned in a fortress called Marshank, and enslaved. Here, he met Martin the Warrior, who had been punished and sentenced to an aweful death. Rose and Grumm met him on top of fortress Marshank, and together they freed Martin, Brome, and a brave warrior squirrel named Felldoh. Shortly after their desperate escape out to sea, Martin, Grumm, and Rose became separated from Brome and Felldoh. To make a long story short, the three companions endure some challenges along the way back to Noonvale, where they are surprised not to see Brome already back. They raise a small army and head back to Marshank to free the rest of the slaves and Brome, and so Martin could take back the sword that was rightfully his and bring down Badrang and all of Marshank. On the way back, she realizes she loves Martin. When they are within sight of Marshank, they are greeted by a vast complex army, later called the Fir and Freedom Fighters, where she reunites happily again with Brome and the others. They take down Marshank, with the already-freed slaves, and slay Badrang. During the great battle, Rose gets caught up in a scruff with Lord Badrang himself! He brutally throws her against the fortress wall, killing her instantly. This is probably the most devastating moment in Marin's life: losing his one and only love to the very person he had set out to kill. This unexpected ending to the book makes even the strongest of us cry for months on end, I know I was, and I still am.
Probably the most distinguishing characteristics of Laterose is her gorgeous voice for singing, and her natural ability to give out a loud cry of an eagle, used to scare off the birds that threatened to eat Martin. After she was buried, Grumm planted on her grave roses, dozens of them, that bloom ever so later than others in the spring. Descendants of Pallum, a friendly hedgehog befriended by Rose, brought this wonderful plant to Redwall, which blooms later than the rest every year, hence called the Laterose of Redwall Abbey.
[edit] Martin the Warrior
Martin, son of Luke the warrior, is a bold young mouse with brown fir. Son of Luke the Warrior, he was born on the Northern Coastal area and lived his earliest years with his tribe in caves overlooking the sea. His father Luke, who was the tribe's respected leader, left him one day to fight Vilu Daskar, and to avenge his wife's death. He took along with him most of the tribe's greatest warriors. Although Martin greatly longed to go with him, his father denied it. Yet, Luke left him with his own, battle-worn sword, and these words, "You must stay here and defend these caves. Defend those weaker than yourself, never fight in anger. Never let another creature take this sword from you, my son. But never let your heart, rule your mind." Time past, and Martin was looked after by his grandmother. One day Martin was wandering far away from his homeland when he happened upon Badrang the tyrant and his evil horde, who forced him into slavery and killed his grandmother. Badrang stole from Martin his sword, which Martin had sworn never to give to another. From that very day on, Martin swore to one day kill Bdrang and take back his father's sword. Time passed, and Martin was forced into slavery to build the evergrowing Marshank. One day, he witnessed Felldoh's father, Barkjon, being cruelly beaten. He uprose and brutally rebelled. Badrang had him tied to the walltop of Marshank during a terrible storm as a punishment of death, and tried to have him eaten by the gulls in the morning. During the storm, he met Rose and Grumm, who agreed to help him escape. The next night, Grumm and Rose dig a tunnel under Marshank to the prizon pit, where Martin, Brome, and a valiant squirrel named Felldoh lay prizoner. Once they were freed, he leads them out to sea in a desperate escape from the horde of Tramun Cloggs, using their longboats. Martin, Rose, and Grumm got separated from Felldoh and Brome. When they reached land, they met up with Pallum the hedgehog and, after a brief encounter with pigmy shrews, continued on to Noonvale. On their journey, they underwent many obstacles, enemies, friends, and dangerous situations until they finally made it to Noonvale. There, Martin gathered a small army of woodlanders to fight back Marshank and Badrang. They all traveled by river back to Marshank.
When they get within sighting distance of Marshank, he is greeted with a vast army of the woodlanders he had met on his way to Noonvale, soon to be called the Fur and Freedom Fighters, completely under his command. He, along with his traveling companions, also meets the Rambling Rosehip Players and the freed slaves. Rose is happily reunited with Brome again. The next day, he leads the surprise attack on Marshank. During the great battle, he sees his love Rose getting caught in a scuff with Lord Badrang himself! He charges toward him to free her. They engage one-on-one, and soon Martin, with his father's sword, ends Badrang's life.
The battle resulted in victory! Yet the Fur and Freedom Fighters paid dearly for it. As such, Badrang had thrown Rose against the wall of the fortress, ending her life instantly. Martin was completely devastated by the loss of his one and only love. Martin stayed in Polleekin's treehouse to recover himself from his wounds, visible and invisible. After some time passed, he denied going back to Noonvale with Brome and the freed slaves, as well as the Rambling Rosehip Players. He decided to instead travel south, alone. Truly, his act of justice and perseverance has earned him the well-deserved title, "Martin the Warrior."
[edit] The Bellmaker
[edit] Blaggut
Blaggut is a searat who was originally boatswain of the ship Pearl Queen in Brian Jacques' The Bellmaker. He and his captain, Slipp, were the only ones to survive their ship being taken. The two found their way to Mossflower, where they came across the mousebabe and Furrtil the molemaid. Blaggut took a liking to the two Dibbuns and prevented Slipp from harming them. Oak Tom and Treerose, squirrels, found the two searats and two Dibbuns. Slipp claimed that he was a cook and Blaggut a carpenter and they were taken to Redwall Abbey.
At the Abbey, Slipp tried to find the treasure of Redwall, but he and Blaggut are scared off by Simeon, whom they thought was a black shadow. Blaggut discovered he does have carpentry skills when he made two little boats out of an empty barrel for Furrtil and the mousebabe. In return for making the boats, the two Dibbuns revealed where the secret treasure of Redwall was but it turned out to be just toys.
In anger, Slipp murdered Mother Mellus and the two searats left Redwall. Out in Mossflower, Blaggut killed Slipp for killing Mellus then returned to Redwall with the chalice Slipp had stolen. He explained what happened and decided to move to a cove by the sea where he would spend his life building boats. Blaggut occasionally visited Redwall Abbey, such as the time when he reported the group that had left Redwall had returned.
[edit] Mellus
The Badger Mother in the time of Mariel of Redwall, Mellus was, like all other badger mothers, stern but friendly. Mellus would not be put off by anything, not even the vicious temper of the amnesiac Mariel. She raised young Dandin the Sword Carrier and future Abbot Saxtus.
Tragedy struck during the war against Urgan Nagru, the Foxwolf. While Joseph the Bellmaker and several companions were gone, two searats made their way into Redwall. Believing there was a treasure inside, the two went looking for it. When it was discovered that the "treasure" was nothing more than a box full of Dibbun collected items, one of the rats tried to kill the Dibbuns who showed up at that moment. Mellus then died trying to defend the dibbun, which she succeeded in doing. She is the only Badger Mother known to reach a violent death.
Mellus died of a knife strike to the heart. She was buried in the grounds of Redwall Abbey, and her passing evoked one final act of good. The searat who had not tried to harm them, a misguided corsair named Blaggut, slew his captain and came back to Redwall after running, apologizing for his captain's actions and declaring that he wished to be a good beast.
It was stated in Salamandastron that Redwall had been without a Badger Mother for a long time. Mellus' death may have been the reason.
[edit] Joseph the Bellmaker
Joseph the Bellmaker is an anthropomorphic mouse in Brian Jacques' Redwall novels Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker. He was voiced by Gordon Hall in the full-cast audiobook of Mariel of Redwall.
A skilled bellmaker, Joseph is the father of Mariel. He was commissioned to create the then unnamed Joseph Bell for Badger Lord Rawnblade Widestripe of Salamandastron. However, in the journey to deliver the bell, Joseph's ship ran afoul of Gabool the Wild. The Searat King took Joseph hostage, and wanted him to construct a tower so he could use the bell himself. Joseph refused, and Gabool threw him out of a window on the island of Terramort.
Joseph was then saved by a fellow enemy of Gabool. The two hid, and formed a resistance force from freed slaves. By using secret tunnels under the island, they were able to steal needed supplies and weapons. Joseph's life in hiding came to an end when Mariel returned to Terramort in the company of Lord Rawnblade, Dandin the Sword Carrier, and various others. Banding together, they attacked Gabool's fortress, and killed the evil searat. Joseph then came to live at Redwall, and his bell was given to the Abbey.
Some seasons later, Martin the Warrior gave Joseph a dream of Mariel, who had departed to the south with Dandin. Together with Rufe Brush, Durry Quill, and other Redwallers, Joseph set sail for the kingdom of Southsward aboard the vessel Pearl Queen. Whilst journeying, Joseph became great friends with the captain, Finnbarr Galedeep. Eventually, the group arrived, and Joseph placed Finnbarr's swords in his hands and faced him towards the sea as the brave sea otter lay dying after suffering a wound from the evil Urgan Nagru. Joseph stayed on at Southsward, though he would later visit his friends at the Abbey.
Joseph was a gray-furred mouse of great age. Despite this, he was incredibly limber, and wielded an assortment of weapons, usually daggers.
[edit] Dandin the Sword Carrier
The great-grandson of Gonff the Mousethief, Dandin grew up in Redwall Abbey. Like his ancestor, he was rather rebellious, but also good-natured. Due to his prestigious lineage, he was very interested in battles and fighting. However, it seemed as though he would never get a chance to prove himself.
Dandin's adventures began upon the arrival of Mariel Gullwhacker at Redwall. Dandin became good friends with the young mousemaid, and wanted to join her in her quest against Gabool the Wild. However, he was forbidden to go by the elders of the Abbey. Unbeknownst to them, the spirit of Martin the Warrior had other plans, entrusting Dandin with the Sword of Martin.
Dandin journeyed with Mariel and other companions to Terramort, where he led the Trag resistance alongside Mariel, her father Joseph the Bellmaker, and the Badger Lord of Salamandastron, Rawnblade Widestripe. They then brought Joseph's masterpiece, the Joseph Bell, to Redwall. Dandin surrendered Martin's sword, and then departed with Mariel for the south.
Whilst in the south, Dandin and Mariel worked together with other warriors to battle the evil Urgan Nagru. They were briefly held prisoner, but then liberated. They continued to do battle in the kingdom of Southsward until the threat of Foxwolf was ended by Finnbarr Galedeep. Dandin returned to Redwall for a time, then set off again with Mariel for parts unknown. His final fate is a mystery, but it is likely that he continued having adventures with Mariel and maybe even started a family with her.
Dandin's weapons consisted of the Sword of Martin in Mariel of Redwall. Later in The Bellmaker he used a very long dagger and a sling.
[edit] Mariel Gullwhacker
Mariel Gullwhacker is an anthropomorphic mouse from the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques. Mariel was voiced by Keddy Sutton in the full-cast audiobook of Mariel of Redwall.
The daughter of Joseph the Bellmaker, Mariel accompanied her father on the voyage to deliver the Joseph Bell to Rawnblade Widestripe of Salamandastron. Along the way, they were captured by searats, and Mariel was enslaved. However, when her master, Gabool the Wild, came at her with a sword, she bested him. As a result, she was thrown into the raging sea.
Mariel washed up on the shores of Mossflower Country, her memories blocked due to an injury suffered at sea. Taking the name Storm Gullwhacker, she set off into the woods, eventually coming to Redwall Abbey. After recovering her memories, she set out with several companions, including her good friend Dandin the Sword Carrier, to face Gabool and find her father.
Mariel and her friends had several adventures along the way, eventually meeting up with Rawnblade as the Badger Lord made his own way to Gabool's fortress. Arriving on the isle of Terramort, she teamed up with the resistance led by her father Joseph to depose Gabool. Mariel later came back to Redwall with her father, but departed with Dandin for parts unknown.
Four seasons later, the duo became involved in the war against the evil Urgan Nagru. They fought gallantly alongside many allies, including the arriving Joseph. After Nagru was slain by Finnbarr Galedeep, they returned to Redwall for a time, before leaving again to "see what what was over the horizon" with Dandin and a young hedgehog called Bowly Pintips. Mariel's final fate is unknown, but it can be assumed that she and Dandin had many more adventures and perhaps even started a family together.
Mariel's main weapon was a knotted piece of rope. Its name, Gullwhacker, came from the fact that Mariel first used it to ward off hungry seabirds. The original Gullwhacker, carried in the quest against Gabool, was later tied to the end of the rope used to ring the Great Joseph Bell. Mariel later crafted other Gullwhackers, and as a skilled warrior could wield just about any weapon.
[edit] Urgan Nagru
Urgan Nagru is an Anthropomorphic fox.
Urgan's real name is unknown, as he took his first name and reversed last name from a dead wolf named Urgan. Claiming to have killed the wolf, and wearing its skin and skull as trophies, Urgan also called himself Foxwolf. However, he had actually skinned the already dead wolf. Despite this, he was a fierce fighter, his chosen weapon being metal hooks replacing the claws of the slain wolf in the skin he wore. After conquering the northern lands, he sailed with his horde to the southern country of Southsward.
Taking over the local monarch's palace, Urgan attempted to establish domination over the land. However, he found opposition in the form of Redwall warriors and their shrew allies from the north, as well as an army of local squirrels, moles, and hedgehogs. When his army was beaten, he tried to escape, but found himself forced into battle with the sea otter Finnbarr Galedeep. Despite the otter being mortally wounded by one of Urgan's horderats, he was able to overcome Foxwolf in combat, bashing the would-be dictator's head into a nearby tree and driving the fangs of the head-mounted wolf skull into the fox's brain.
Urgan's only known family is his mate, Silvamord.
[edit] Finnbarr Galedeep
Missing an eye and an ear, and covered in scars and tattoos, Finnbarr was the captain of the vessel Pearl Queen. However, it was stolen from him by a group of searats who also killed his wife and two sons. Years later, a group of Redwallers and Guosim aided him in retrieving his vessel. As thanks, Finnbarr captained the ship in a voyage to the country of Southsward. Proving himself an able seaman, Finnbarr became good friends with Joseph the Bellmaker.
Upon arriving in Southsward, Finnbarr joined the battle with Urgan Nagru the fox. Crying his battle cry of "Galedeeeep", the powerful otter struck down many vermin. In the end, Finnbarr entered battle with Foxwolf himself, killing him at the cost of his own life. As he lay dying, he asked Joseph to point him toward the sea, and his last living thought was of himself sailing off in the Pearl Queen.
Finnbarr's chosen weapons were a pair of curved swords that he wore on his back. He held them in his grasp as he died, and they were later presented to Rufe Brush and Durry Quill for their bravery. In honor of their slain comrades, they named the blades: one Finnbarr after its original owner, and one Fatch after a brave shrew who gave his life to save Rufe.

Wife of Lord Russano the Wise, Lady Rosalaun lived at Salamandastron with him. Rosalaun was a kind, understanding person, often amused by her husband's childlike enthusiasim for his pet projects. She also enjoyed teasing him, threatening to send him off to bed for being naughty. She also encouraged him, and was the one who convinced him to read his account of the arrival of Lord Brocktree at Salamandastron.
Melanius and Snowstripe were Russano and Rosalaun's daughter and son. Melanius was the older of the two, and it is unknown which of them continued the line of Badger Lords to later years.
[edit] The Taggerung
[edit] Deyna(The Taggerung)
Deyna is an otter born in Redwall, but when his father brought him to a stream to let water go on him, his father was shot by one of Sawney Rath's soldiers. The band of vermin then took him in, believing him to be the famous Taggerung. Deyna grew up believing that, but after he runs away because he doesn't want to kill another animal, the vermin choose a new leader to hunt down and kill Deyna. After Deyna finds Redwall, he gets injured there and the Redwallers bring him in. His mother recognized him, and Deyna turns in to run of Redwall's most famous warrior otters.

[edit] Lord Hightor and Lady Merola
The parents of Sagaxus, Lord Hightor and Lady Merola ruled over the mountain of Salamandastron. They were rather distressed when Sagax departed to go off traveling, though they accepted that it had to happen sooner or later, due to the legendary tension that occurs between two full grown male badgers living in the same space. Hightor was rather put off by Sagax's choices, including his friendship with Kroova Wavedog, whom Hightor saw as a bad influence.
Hightor and Merola were most surprised when Sagax returned a season later, sailing a pirate vessel with a crew of Guosim and Redwall creatures. The two were most impressed by how much their son had matured, though Merola was startled by his carrying of a battle-axe. When Sagax sailed off again, Hightor sent a score of Long Patrol hares to accompany him. Following the defeat of the Pure Ferrets, Sagax promised to visit them every season, and also made arrangements for them to visit Redwall Abbey.
[edit] Sagaxus
Sagaxus, also known as Sagax, was a badger. Living with his parents, Lord Hightor and Lady Merola in Salamandastron, he later opted to run away with his friend Scarum, who was a hare. Scarum and he escaped to his sea otter friend Kroova Wavedog in Kroova's ship the Stop Dog. They escaped, and, after reaching many islands and having Scarum almost be put in slavery, the got captured by sea rats. Triss and her friend Shogg saved them, and brought them to Redwall. Scarum and Sagax eventually decided to go back to Salamandastron.
[edit] Triss
Triss, the main character of the book named after her, was a slave. Her otter friend Shogg and hedgehog friend Welfo get put in an iron cage but escape by sawing through the bars with a file. They escape by a ship, but the Pure Ferrets, Kurda and Bladd, chase her. Triss, Shogg, and Welfo reach and island known as Peace Island, and Welfo decides to stay there. When Shogg and Triss reach the land, they are still being followed by Kurda and Bladd. Shogg and Triss get into Mossflower, and the Pure Ferrets lose their trail. After finding out the badger Sagaxus, the hare Scarum, and the otter Kroova Wavedog are imprisoned by Kurda and Bladd, they save them and travel to Redwall. The serpents, living in what used to be Brockhall, attack Shogg and kill him. Triss anhd many other Redwallers kill the serpents, and Triss chases Kurda down. They do a battle, but Triss breaks Kurda's sword. Kurda then turns and runs, but trips and falls on her broken sword. She then dies, and after Shogg's funeral, she travels to the place Bladd and Kurda came from, and frees the many slaves there. On the way back to Redwall, she visits Peace Island to see Welfo.
[edit] Loamhedge
[edit] Grawn
An ancient and shriveled badger, Grawn was the guardian and friend of Lonna Bowstripe. Grawn educated Lonna in the ways of the bowbeast, and also told the young badger of his Seer talents. When Lonna was fully grown, he and Grawn set out on a journey for Salamandastron, where Grawn planned to live out the rest of his days in comfort. Unfortunately, their plans were shattered when they were attacked in the night by Raga Bol's forces.
Grawn was killed in the ensuing battle, and Lonna grievously wounded. Fortunately for the two, they were found by a local group of sea otters. The group nursed Lonna back to health, and buried Grawn under a mound of stones, with Lonna's original bow-shattered in the fight-as a marker. Lonna went on to avenge his death, slaying those who had killed the father-like old badger, and then completed the journey they had set out on, becoming Lord of Salamandastron.
[edit] Rakkety Tam
[edit] Lady Melesme
Badger Lady of Salamandastron, Melesme ruled the mountain at the time that Gulo the Savage came to Mossflower country. After losing eight hares to the beast's cannibals, she sent along a hundred Long Patrol hares to track them down, accompanied by Rakkety Tam MacBurl and Wild Doogy Plumm. Melesme was a kind old badger, very regal in manner and look. She was voiced by Beth Cassidy.
[edit] High Rhulain
[edit] Tiria
Tiria was born and grew up in Redwall Abbey, the tall daughter of Banjon Wildlough. An able-bodied fighter, she dreamed of becoming a Skipper of Otters, something that was forbidden to her by Mossflower Otter Law. However, she soon found herself thrust into a very different role after the arrival of first an injured osprey, and then an injured goose in Mossflower. Taking them back to Redwall, Tiria learned of their plight, driven from the formerly otter-ruled Green Isle by the wildcat warlord Riggu Felis. She later became the new Rhulain of the otters of Green Island.
