Wikipedia:WikiProject Playground

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a WikiProject, a collaboration area and open group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of a particular topic, or to organizing some internal Wikipedia process.
Please see the Guide to WikiProjects and the Directory of WikiProjects for more information.

First, an important note for everyone to remember:

A few Wikipedians have gotten together to make some suggestions about how we might organize data in articles about playgrounds and playground equipment. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the guidelines here might be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

[edit] Current state of affairs

The list in the Playground article of equipment and facilities typically found on a playground is woefully incomplete. It also has at least one item that I have no clue what it is ("stride"?).

Currently, playground and playground equipment articles, where they exist, are circular references (e.g., "playground contains a slide", "slides are found on playgrounds").

Most articles for equipment don't exist; when there are references, it's usually because I've added them to existing disambiguation pages or snuck in a sentence in a larger article on a different subject with the same name. (e.g., Merry-go-round currently redirects to Carousel, which explictly talks about the powered kind with up-and-down horses, not the playground kind).

And I'm flabbergasted that the article on "sandbox" has to do only with metaphorical sandboxes and shuffles the real/orginal sandbox reference back to "playground"! This is just wronnnnng. :-) Currently Playground links to sand castle instead.

[edit] Suggested approach

  • Keep adding playground equipment to list on playground page. (Don't think that we want to break it into a separate List of playground equipment page.)
  • Find where all the existing links go (see examples above), create appropriate diambig pages and/or redirects (or remove redirects) and/or rearrange existing articles so that each piece of equipment has its own page.
  • Page titles shd simply be the name of the equipment (e.g., "sandbox") unless it's not the primary definition (in sandbox's case, it *is* the primary definition...), in which case the title should be e.g., "Slide (playground)"
  • Photos are important. Multiple photos of each would be wonderful, because there are so many variations. (Note: I've found public-domain photos of sandbox and swing so far and will upload them soon.) (Also note: users with digital cameras, it should be easy to snap decent pictures of playground equipment and in the process verify that we've listed all the relevant equipment. Plus you can swing on the swings.)
  • Infobox: I don't think one is warranted in this case.
  • Could discuss: History, safety issues (e.g., why there aren't monkeybars on playgrounds any more), materials, variations, how children typically use the equipment, what else?
  • Must look in dictionary and use creative juices to also identify similar equipment used for other purposes (e.g., sandbox also refers to a box for cats to use as a bathroom; seesaw is also used in a different way by acrobats, etc.).
  • Need tie-in to (or discussion of) Par course equipment, too.

[edit] Equipment needing attention

Add needy equipment to this list; when you've worked on a page, use notation similar to "+ added photo" or "+page now exists":

  • Seesaw - has brief article and one photo; needs another photo of more standard playground seesaw (done) - article still too brief
  • Merry-go-round
  • Swing (seat) /swingset -page exists, with one photo! Could use more photos; see its talk page for location of many swing photos. Elf | Talk 04:40, 1 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Monkey bars -page exists, several photos! Elf | Talk 04:40, 1 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Sandbox -done! wouldn't mind photo of small plastic commercial sandbox Elf | Talk 04:40, 1 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Slide
  • Climber (not sure what this is)
  • Walking bridge (ditto)

[edit] Pictures to go in articles

By all means replace these if you have better pictures.

Take more & add them here; better yet, create missing articles and add them there!
