Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Pink Floyd (including individual members' work). This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

Pink Floyd are one of the most successful and influential bands of the last 40 years. While the Pink Floyd article itself has achieved featured status there are dozens or hundreds of other Pink Floyd articles which still require a lot of work. In addition, there is a shortage of fair-use images, poor referencing, and a large number of redirects and stubs which need expansion. It is the goal of this project to unite the many Pink Floyd fans and Wikipedia editors to improve the myriad of Pink Floyd-related articles. For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and Wikipedia:WikiProject/Best practices.

Contents

[edit] Scope

The primary goal of the project is to improve all articles related to Pink Floyd. The first major challenge is to improve the most important Pink Floyd-related articles - specifically Syd Barrett, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Pink Floyd live performances and Pink Floyd trivia - to a level where they can become featured articles on the Wikipedia. The secondary goal is to have enough quality Pink Floyd-related articles and copyright-free images to create a compelling Pink Floyd portal.

[edit] Structure

Following the guidelines already established by music, albums, and films for Wikiprojects for infoboxes and the like creates consistency across the Wikipedia. Please discuss any specific changes that you feel should be modified on the talk page.

Use of the Cite.php system for references across all articles covered by the Wikiproject is recommended.

As the band is from the United Kingdom, all articles should be written using UK English spelling and grammar, including treating the band name as a plural noun; ie. "Pink Floyd are a band", not "Pink Floyd is a band".

[edit] Log

In order to track our progress as a community, whenever you perform some notable work on the following goals and projects please add a note in the log letting us all know where we are on our goals.

[edit] Goals

  1. Promote major Pink Floyd-related articles to featured status.
  2. Create articles for all Pink Floyd songs which currently don't have an article or simply consist of a redirect to the song's album.
  3. Locate and upload images under free license (such as these) for use in various articles.
  4. Acquire enough high-quality articles to populate a portal in the future.

[edit] Projects

  1. Major work on the 5 members of the band (Syd Barrett, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright) is needed. Expansion where necessary, adding references (which are scant or absent in most of the articles) and copyediting is needed.
  2. The Pink Floyd live performances article has improved dramatically over the last few months. A solid check for unreferenced statements, fleshing out any areas not fully covered, and an overall copyedit is needed, and then it is probably suitable for submission to peer review as a prelude to a FAC.
  3. Creation of stubs on all songs from their studio albums. Many song articles have been created as redirects to their album; these are probably easiest to find by using the "What links here" feature from each album's page. {{Infobox Song}} should be used, and occassionally {{Infobox Single}} where appropriate, and Category:Pink Floyd songs should be added to each. Once it's established how many exist we can propose creating a Pink Floyd song stub category to help organize them better.

[edit] Tasks

  1. Placing the {{WPFloyd}} template on all talk pages of any article even peripherally related to Pink Floyd. If possible, assess the articles as well. Those that have already been assessed, and the guidelines for assessment, can be found on the assessment sub-page. Automatic logs on the sub-page are updated every 24 hours or so, although mention of assessments can also be placed in the log. If you don't feel comfortable with assessing the article, simply placing the template {{WPFloyd}} on the article's talk page is enough, someone else will assess it later.
  2. Make sure infoboxes for various band members are correct ({{Infobox Musical artist}} or {{Infobox Biography}} where appropriate) and correct accordingly. Individual articles include (but are not limited to; please expand, and remove those which have been confirmed or fixed):
    1. Syd Barrett
    2. David Gilmour
    3. Nick Mason
    4. Roger Waters
    5. Richard Wright
    6. Steve O'Rourke
    7. Storm Thorgerson
    8. Clare Torry
    9. Dick Parry
    10. Jon Carin
    11. Tim Renwick
    12. Snowy White
    13. Guy Pratt
    14. Gary Wallis
    15. Durga McBroom
    16. Sam Brown
    17. Claudia Fontaine

[edit] Adopt an article

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

[edit] Other subpages

[edit] Templates

The {{Pink Floyd}} template should appear on all major articles (if it doesn't already). It is unnecessary on articles about individual songs and should be removed from song articles, and is probably not necessary in articles about more peripheral subjects (eg. Jon Carin).

Members of the project may want to put the {{User WPFloyd}} infobox on their user page, which appears below:

This user is a member of the Pink Floyd WikiProject

The template which should be placed on all Pink Floyd-related talk pages, with an assessment, is {{WPFloyd}}. See the template's talk page for proper formatting of the template.

[edit] Infoboxes

Following are useful infoboxes which should be used in a standard form across the project's articles, although some discussion may be required about which are most appropriate for a given subject.
