[edit] Sources
Books, online resources, etc. that will help in writing and editing |
- Corning, Howard M. Dictionary of Oregon History. Binfords & Mort Publishing, 1956, for important people pre-1950.
- History of Portland on Google books so you can search; or download it in PDF (free!) here.Scott, Harvey (1890). History of Portland Oregon. D. Mason & Co., Syracuse.
- The PDF is a good option if you want to print it out (or part of it - it's over 600 pages) - but it doesn't allow you to search text; the Google page is better in that respect. (When searching text, note that the book contains some misspellings.)
- This book has also been republished on the web by Access Genealogy, which is an easy way to search it: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/portland-oregon.htm

[edit] Priorities
Pioneers |
Examples of pretty good articles:
- Vicki Walker - a decent article about a prominent state legislator
- Gordon Smith - covers numerous aspects of this Senator's career
Need expanding:
Need to be started:
- William H. Rector: Champoeg settler, 1847 state legislator, part of the first Joel Palmer expedition, cofounder of the Salem woolen mill, 1861 Commissioner of Indian Affairs, railway entrenprenuer. [1]
- Colonel James Taylor: Astoria settler, assistant commissary to General Joel Palmer, first territorial treasurer. [2]
- Felix Hathaway: Helped build the Star of Oregon, liberty ship named after him too. Could even link to Joe Gale.
- Alvin T. Smith, early Forest Grove settler, helped start Tualatin Academy, early postmaster, prov. government.[3]
- Andre Longtain - owned land where Champoeg vote held, came to Oregon in 1811 to help found Ft. Astoria.[4]
- Philip Leget Edwards - about four articles already link there.[5]

Politicians |
Governors (see List of Governors of Oregon):
To expand:
To expand:
Need copy editing:
State senators and representatives:
To create:
- William McCoy (Oregon politician), first African American elected to the Oregon House (1972)
To expand:
- Ted Ferrioli, current Senate Minority Leader
- Grattan Kerans, pretty slim article for former speaker with 20 years in the legislature
- Kate Brown (politician)
- Peter Courtney, current Senate President
- Margaret Carter, current senator and first African American woman elected to the Legislative Assembly (1984) - this citation, from the Jackie Winters article, will help.[1]
- Avel Gordly, current senator and first African American woman elected to the Oregon Senate (1996). Currently the only Independent in the OLA; 2006 recipient of Portland Mayor's Spirit of Portland Award (selected by Mayor Potter)[6]
Other politicians
To create:
- Molly Bordonaro - opposed David Wu in 1998, ran George W. Bush's Oregon campaign, appointed ambassador to Malta. Rising Republican star, will likely become prominent in Oregon politics after Bush's term ends in 2008.
|
Other |
- Schnitzer family, Oregon's Rockefellers, namesake for the company, theater, and museum [7]
- Ross T. McIntire, Roosevelt doctor, vice admiral, born in Salem (WU grad), NYT article 11/30/1938
