The current NJ collaboration of the week is Geography of New Jersey. This is an effort by participants of WikiProject New Jersey to create and improve articles relating to New Jersey. Please help this effort by helping out on Geography of New Jersey.

This is a collaborative effort to reduce the number of nonexistent New Jersey articles and to improve the quality of existing articles about New Jersey. Please consider joining the effort by nominating articles or participating on Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/NJCOTW.

[edit] New articles

A list of recently created articles that are related to New Jersey is created by a bot and maintained at User:AlexNewArtBot/NewJerseySearchResult. These articles should be examined and considered for inclusion in this project.

[edit] Culture articles

  • Music of New Jersey - list of music in New Jersey has to be cut down to important musicians/bands/artists and rest be moved to this article.

[edit] NJ media articles

  • Star-Ledger-This page definately needs work, it is only a stub right now. The Star-Ledger is the most important New Jersey newspaper, this page definately needs expansion.-Jersey Devil 07:16, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
No longer a stub but could still be expanded. Wl219 10:16, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] State government articles

Note: This project is not specifically a government project.

  • New Jersey Senate has been completed, and pages exists for all 40 Senators. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC).
  • New Jersey General Assembly page has been completed with pages for all 80 Assembly members. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Governors of New Jersey page has many missing entries. We should create a generic stub with years of service and party for each governor (starting with post-independence and then working backwards), and then make an effort to expand pages.
  • I (AlanSohn) have already created a number of articles regarding New Jersey forms of government (see Faulkner Act (New Jersey) for a starting point. There were a few missing articles for the City (New Jersey) and Town (New Jersey) traditional forms of government which have been complete, and other pages were updated with revised information. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
  • I (AlanSohn) also updated the New Jersey Legislature page to include the municipalities in each of the 40 New Jersey legislative districts.
  • Board of Chosen Freeholders was created listing how this unique institution works in all of New Jersey's 21 counties. Alansohn 20:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
  • I (AlanSohn) created a model template on the Teaneck, New Jersey page that could be used to show the state / federal legislators in each municipality.
  • It would be good to create and coordinate state government articles: Branches, departments, legislators, etc.
  • New Jersey Supreme Court article needs to be expanded and pages for current judges created. Historical information on Judges could also be included on this page.
    • I have created a couple of the judges' articles and plan on doing the rest at my earliest convenience. However, it seems as if the article on Supreme Justice Deborah T. Poritz was copied straight off of njcourts online. I'm pretty sure that this is not allowed (but as a relatively new user I'm not too sure exactly what is and isn't a copyvio), and I have no idea of what to do with (but I wikified it). I have adjusted it so that it isn't a copyvio anymore (at least I think). AndyZ 01:08, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
  • New Jersey State House article needs to be expanded and photos have to be added to the article. AndyZ 00:33, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
    • Pretty much good now. AndyZ 13:53, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
  • New Jersey state constitution needs to be expanded and completed
  • New Jersey Democratic State Committee-Just created the NJ State Democratic Party page. It is still in its stub stage and needs more info added to it. Unfortunately the State Party site does not provide much information on the State Party's history. If anyone has any info on the party's history do not hesitate to add it as the article definately needs to be expanded.-Jersey Devil 22:42, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
  • 2006 New Jersey State Government Shutdown - Newly created article as of yesterday invovling Corzine shutting down the goverment involving the budget issues. --ZeWrestler Talk 12:29, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Urban Enterprise Zone is proposed to be merged with an article describing federal empowerment zones. I will start some research to expand this to an article specifically about the NJ UEZ program.Jim Miller 22:16, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
  • New Jersey State Police is currently listed with a Start rating if anybody has ideas for improvement please carry those out. --Editcml 13:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject New Jersey}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:New Jersey articles by quality, Category:New Jersey articles by importance, Category:New Jersey articles needing attention. The quality and importance ratings serve as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist. There is also Category:Non-article New Jersey pages) for things like redirect pages, templates, categories, images, etc.

[edit] Templates

The main templates page is located at /templates. This section lists the most commonly used and most general templates. For commenting, reference, and more in-depth template information, see the main template page.

[edit] Common templates

  • {{Project New Jersey}} (to go on the tops of the talk pages of New Jersey–related articles)

New Jersey History

  • {{NJhistory}} (a small, right-aligned box to go at the top of New Jersey history articles)

NJT rail line and NJT stations

  • Allows you to easily insert the "next" and "previous" stations on NJT station articles. See {{NJT rail line}}. We need to convert all our stations from {{rail line}} to this new template! Please see the template's talk for instructions.

[edit] Other templates

For a complete listing of templates without the clutter of displaying them all, see /templatelist.

[edit] Categories

Category hierarchy starts at Category:New Jersey. See Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Categories for full list and proposed changes.

There is also a category of Wikipedians called: Category:Wikipedians in New Jersey.

[edit] Images

Here are some images that were either created by/for this Project, or would just be handy for this Project. Please add more!

  • Lots of images found at commons:Category:New Jersey. Please consider uploading free licensed works here so that they can be easily used by projects besides the English language wikipedia.
  • Flickr has a bunch of suitably licensed photos. See [1] [2] [3] [4].

[edit] Maps

In the Infobox Template:Infobox Town NJ, there is a place for an image showing the town's place in the state. Can someone advise the rest of us on creating such images? Most of the New Jersey pages already have images showing the municipalities location within its county, as well as an inset of the county's location within New jersey.

  • A good source of historical maps is the Rutgers Collection. Maps published before 1923 are in the public domain in the US. Consider uploading them to Wikimedia Commons.
  • University of Texas, Austin has a number of maps available [5].
  • NJDOT publishes a number of maps [6]. Note that vector versions of the maps are also available in Arcview shape format. The PDF versions of the maps are under copyright, as there are original works of authorship and creativity involved. The raw data (vector shape drawings) are believed to be ineligible for copyright since no creative work was involved in making them (i.e. we can use {{PD-ineligible}}).
  • NJDEP publishes outline maps of counties (showing municipalities) in GIF format and Arcview shape format. [7] These are believed to be ineligible for copyright since no creative work was involved in making them (i.e. we can use {{PD-ineligible}}).

Note: Arcview shape format can be converted to open formats like SVG using a tool like GeoCon [8] (LGPL licensed, but C# for MS Windows; maybe it would work under Mono; anyone have a portable solution?). The SVG can then be edited in tools like Inkscape and uploaded directly to Wikipedia.

[edit] Requested photos

You can use the {{reqphotoin|New Jersey}} template to add talk pages to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New Jersey. Please add free content photos for these articles where possible.

[edit] Stubs

Stub-sorting Wikiproject

To avoid unnecessary redirects and reverts, please discuss any new stub type you wish to create at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals prior to its creation and placement in articles or tables.

This New Jersey road or road transport-related article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.

[edit] To do

To-do list for Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey:

Tasks:

  • Requests: Demographics of New Jersey, Economy of New Jersey,Hinduism in New Jersey, Transportation in New Jersey, Law and government of New Jersey, Template:Infobox Town NJ
  • NJ Congressional Districts: Update New Jersey Congressional Districts to 2002 redistricting
    • Are you sure that the districts are out of date? If they are, I have a spreadsheet with a complete list of the municipalities in each of the 13 districts that I could wikify as needed. Alansohn 02:03, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
      • I have not researched it, I was going by the information on the talk page. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 04:27, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
  • General NJ Pages: Complete New Jersey State Constitution
    • We need to completely rework the New Jersey page, which seems to be entirely disorganized and misprioritized, and has become a dump for anyone with any musical or acting connection to New Jersey. We should propbably break it up into a series of separate articles with concise paragraphs describing major topics within the subject. Alansohn 19:23, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
      • New Jersey State Constitution is missing sections for articles from Articles VI-XI. History of New Jersey is a FA. AndyZ 14:30, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
  • NJ State House: Photo(s) and expansion for New Jersey State House (see [9])
    • I expanded it, but it needs images. AndyZ 21:39, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Municipalities: Develop template (in the non-wiki meaning) of sections to be filled in for each municipality. I'd still love to reach out to local communities to help fill in a lot of the blanks, perhaps via the public schools.
  • Education and High Schools: Work on the List of high schools in New Jersey, which is not only incomplete, but of the schools listed, only a small fraction have any pages, let alone useful content. I suggest reaching out to the schools involved and having students prepare a history, with pictures, enrollment stats, etc., perhaps with a template as a starting point. Alansohn 02:03, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
    • See [10] for lists of high schools by city, which hopefully should help us to complete the list. AndyZ 22:42, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
      • It's painstaking, but we have to do something like that. We also need to link up the HS pages with the municipality the school is in, so that we have education sections for almost all municipalities. Even if they don't go to school in their own municipality A, there should be an item that says that children attend school system B., etc. We have a VfD going on for Garfield High School (New Jersey), which admittedly is not a great article, but we should make sure that the HS pages are both broad (we have most schools covered) and deep (that each page has meaningful content). Alansohn 22:58, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
      • Template:NJReportCard is currently under development (and appears to almost be ready to implement). It should be used (instruction on Template Talk:NJReportCard) in the "External links" (or similar) section articles, especially school and school district articles, to point to the NJ Dept of Edu's report cards. Unlike the older, static links, this will allow for easier managment (and updating) in the future. //MrD9 20:50, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
        • Now it is ready to implement into the External links section of the School articles- I fixed the problem with the testing for the fourth input. I'm listing it under the Templates section. AndyZ 01:02, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Municipality Names and County References: Audit references to township municipalities in County articles. Some townships are referred to with township in its name (e.g. Washington Township) and some are not (e.g. Wayne) but are still referred to with the Township name on the county page (e.g. Passaic County), and the Wayne, New Jersey page is a redirect to Wayne Township, New Jersey, for example. May need locals to clarify usage. Everyone should pick a county they are familiar with and audit the townships.
  • NJ Lists: Complete and create articles for the articles in the list of lists.

[edit] Wikiportal

This project now has a portal: Portal:New Jersey.

[edit] Project notice template

New Jersey-related articles should have the following link (Template:Project New Jersey) inserted at the top of the talk pages:

{{Project New Jersey}}

It will come out looking like this:

Flag of New Jersey
