Wikipedia:WikiProject Neopaganism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been suggested that WikiProject Germanic Mysticism be merged into this page or section. (Discuss) |
Welcome to the Neopaganism WikiProject, dedicated to expanding, organizing, verifying, and NPOVing articles related to neopagan religions. Our scope includes hundreds of articles, from Alp-luachra to Zsuzsanna Budapest. If this sounds interesting to you, watch this page and feel free to add your name to the list below!
[edit] Goals of the Project
- Through discussion and consensus, determine a standard for the capitalization and hyphenation of "neopagan(ism)" and "pagan(ism)" in articles and apply it consistently. Also, determine what circumstances call for the use of "pagan" vs. "neopagan".
- Find source citations for all of the information presented in Neopaganism and Wicca.
- Expand Wikipedia's coverage of notable forms of Wiccan people and practices. Populate Category:Wiccan traditions.
- Expand Wikipedia's coverage of polytheistic reconstructionist movements and groups. Integrate coverage of the various Germanic movements with other discussion of reconstructionist polytheism. Fill in gaps at Neopaganism#Reconstructionist.
- Where necessary, rewrite neopaganism-related articles, especially those related to ethnic traditions widely practiced outside the US and/or in non-English-speaking countries, to represent a more global view.
- Verify information in "X in Neopaganism" or "Neopagan views of x" sections of articles on other topics, citing sources and making sure that the information is consistent with that presented in Neopaganism (after that article has been verified, of course!).
- Eventually, bring Neopaganism and Wicca to Featured Article status.
- Present a clear distinction between Wicca and Reconstructionist Neopaganism, "Neopaganism" is not a synonym for "Wicca" and articles must reflect this for accuracy.

[edit] Article Improvement Drive: Neopaganism
Neopaganism is currently rated as B-class and needs a lot of help. It is the #1 most important article to our project, but it lacks source citations in many places and contains weasel words and phrases. I know that with a little help from everyone on the project, it will be easy to bring Neopaganism to Good Article status. Here are a list of things you can do:
- Find a "citation needed" tag in the article. Locate a relevant reliable source and insert a source citation.
- Find a "name a specific person/group" tag and replace it with a reference to a specific person or group.
- Compare one section or paragraph of the article to Paganism to make sure the two articles are consistent.
- Evaluate the article against one of the six Good Article criteria.
- ...or make any other improvements you can think of!
[edit] Assessment department
Badbilltucker has set up a new assessment department for the project at Assessment. This allows us to keep track of article quality and importance so that we can focus our efforts on the articles most in need of help. If you see a talk page template that says the article has not been assessed, please consider giving the article a quick assessment according to the assessment instructions.
[edit] Deletions and merges
[edit] Articles nominated for deletion/deletion review
- Modern Gallae — Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Modern Gallae (2nd nomination)
- Pagan House — Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pagan House
- Ignition (event) — Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ignition (event) (Regional Burning Man event)
- Philip Carr-Gomm - Tagged for Notability - author of at least fifteen books, mostly about Druidry, and a leader of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids; found in several reference books on magic and Paganism
- Richard Kaczynski - Tagged for Notability - author of or contributor to seven books, including a biography of Aleister Crowley
User:Pigman has recently nominated several articles about Neo-Pagan and magical folk for deletion, and tagged several more. These include:
- Philip H. Farber - DELETED author of two books on magic and neuro-linguistic programming (too bad his latest book, published by Weiser, didn't get into the article; that's what happens in a rush to judgement), several instructional DVDs, editor of Paradigm Shift
- Nevill Drury - Tagged for notability but retracted - VERY prominant researcher and author of over forty books in fields of Shamanism, magic and Australian art
- Sally Morningstar - nominated but kept - author of over 20 books
- Nicki Scully - Nominated for Deletion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nicki Scully - author of five books related to Shamanism, healing and guided meditation, and producer of at least eight CDs, tapes (one with a soundtrack by Grateful Dead members) and DVDs for adults and children
- Dennis Chernin M.D. - Nominated for Deletion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dennis Chernin - author of five books and three CDs (two with musical performance by Muruga Booker)involving meditation, breathing, yoga, chakras, etc
- Skip Ellison - Tagged for Notability (pending) - third-term archdruid of ADF, author of four books (This article survived at least one nomination before, but some editors will just keep trying until they get their way)
- Morwyn - Multiple tags, including Notability - author of 8 books, two winners of national awards
- Vivianne Crowley - Tagged for Notability - prominent Wiccan author of at least six books
- Chas S. Clifton - Tagged for Notability - author of at least nine books on Neo-Paganism, witchcraft and related subjects
I consider this a bit of a tagging spree. In any event, I would ask that the Wikipedia Neo-Pagan community help improve these articles rather than let them either be deleted or chopped down to nothing in preparation for a future deletion. These are, in my opinion, notable authors and leaders in both our community and our field of interest. I do not have sufficient time to do it all by myself, nor the experience and supporting group of editors that Pigman has. I hope you will visit these articles (and the additional ones I fear will be added to this list) and do what you can (and see past Google News Search as the determination of an author's notability). [edit] Articles that have been proposed for deletion
- See this list by NeoFreak, which includes many neopaganism-related articles (including Wicca) as needing work/potentially deletable.

- Alexei Kondratiev
[edit] Proposed merges and moves
- Religious discrimination against Wiccans is suggested to be split into Neopaganism in the United States and Religious discrimination against Neopagans.
- Religious discrimination against Asatru is proposed to be merged into Religious discrimination against Neopagans.
- And again Religious discrimination against Wiccans, Discrimination against Hellenic neopaganism and Religious discrimination against Asatru is up for termination... er... merging. // Liftarn

- High magic requested at WP:RA
- Lexa Roséan requested at WP:RA
- Pagan symbols requested at WP:RA, was misspelled as "pagen" so consider creating redirects
- IPT green button campaign or some variant of this name, referring to the letter that started it, by Barbara Fogle aka Saoba, and the events that followed the original publication of the letter in Green Egg (?). I have the text of the letter, but have found several versions on the net, most without Barbara's signature. Unsure whether Saoba should have her own page or simply a paragraph on the IPT page.
- Sirius Rising - for now, IMO, this should redirect to Brushwood Folklore Center
- Patricia Telesco
- Taylor Ellwood
- Correlian Navatist Tradition
- Wellspring Gathering - for now, IMO, this should redirect to Ar nDraiocht Fein
- Vangelo - Found a reference to it in the Aradia Article. It is referred to as a gospel.
[edit] List of Neo-Pagan festivals and events
On the talk page of this article is a list of several Neopagan festivals and events that were deleted by an editor because they do not yet have an article written about them. I have included a website for each to help start anyone off who would like to write an article about one or more of these events, and restore their name(s) to the list.
