[edit] Divisions

  • Assessment
  • Collaboration: Now live. Nominate your candidates within. There are some very short and simple instructions to follow. : )
  • Frank Lloyd Wright: Frank Lloyd Wright related Historic Places collaboration.
  • Sources: Information sources available for use as reliable sources in NRHP related articles.

[edit] Task Forces

[edit] Guidelines

[edit] Article names

The name of the article should be the current, formal title of the place. Other accepted names can be indicated in the first sentence with bold text. If there are multiple places with the same name, the article should be entitled Name (City[, state if necessary]).

[edit] Wikilinks

  • All the separate lists for each state or territory need to have their blue links checked, to make sure they are linked to unique articles. Disambiguation is required for a number of articles, especially common names for the local "Post Office" and train stations or churches. Make use of piped links for an existing article with a different name than the title that appears on the NRHP.
  • Click on a red link that appears on the list. From the resulting page, "search for the article in Wikipedia" to possibly locate an existing article with a different name about the building or place. The name on the list should match the name on the NRHP database - with corrected spelling, as required (Refer to: Other useful links, below). Use a piped link from the existing article name to the redlink on the list. In this way, the Palmer-Perkins House (Boundary Increase) will be linked directly to the Palmer-Perkins House article, for example.

[edit] NHL articles by State

The purpose of this manual tabulation is to track and encourage development of NHL articles, listed in state-specific liss of NHLs themselves listed at List of National Historic Landmarks by state.

  • Every NHL deserves an article.
  • Certainly each should get a photo or other image.
  • NRHP infoboxes are suitable for most but perhaps not all. Some articles already have another infobox type, it may or may not be helpful to add a NRHP infobox. However NRHP infobox often can be added below another infobox, perhaps with only key fields filled out.
  • NRHP infoboxes now can separately include NHL designation date as a field.
  • Almost every NHL article can include a link to the National Park Service summary about that NHL, for example [NHL link for Mar-A-Lago site]. To be excluded only if the NHL summary is not available. The count indicates number of links.
  • For many NHLs, the National Park Service has a PDF copy of the text of the site's nomination for NHL status, or an "Inventory/Registration" form. This can be linked from the article. See [NRHP text PDF link example for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.
  • For almost as many NHLs, there is also a PDF of photographs accompanying the site's nomination or inventory/registration. For example, see [NRHP photos PDF link for Mar-A-Lago]. The count indicates number of links.

[edit] Sources for information on National Register of Historic Places

[edit] Lists of NRHPs and basic facts about them

Lists of NRHPs are available, organized by state and county, within List of National Register of Historic Places entries. For example, List of Registered Historic Places in Onondaga County, New York is one list with pictures for some of its NRHPs. Almost all of the 79,000 NRHPs in the U.S. are probably listed on one of these lists, thanks to continued efforts of WP:NRHP members. But most of the NRHP sites listed are "red-links" with no articles yet. (About 1600 of the 2400 or so NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks have blue-links already.)

To find address lists of NRHPs in a given area, it may sometimes be easiest to work with data available from NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces.Com, a commercial site that serves up some of the public domain data from the NRIS system. For example, see NRHP.COM's List of NRHPs in Onondaga County, New York. You can change the state and county name in the URL to one you are interested in. Each county report from this source contains a separate tab for the Historic Districts within the county, in which it provides useful numbers of contributing and non-contributing elements in each district.

The same information should be available from the National Register information system (NRIS), available here (to be added), but getting to the right screens to get all of the same data is not easy to figure out. To perform a name search, try here (to be added). To perform an architect search, try here (to be added). It is particularly not clear how to identify whether a given NRHP is a historic district vs. a building, site, structure, or object. (Using either the NRHP.COM site or the Elkman infobox generator, one can ascertain, somewhat indirectly, only whether or not a site is a historic district.)

Every Friday, the National Park Service publishes the Weekly Update, which includes all actions on the National Register for the prior week(s): additions; removals; boundary increases and decreases; additional documentation; approvals of multiple covers (MPS); and designations of NHLs. The Weekly Update can be found here.

[edit] Elkman NRHP infobox generator

For editing new articles on NRHPs, there's a useful tool created and maintained by Elkman, a WP:NRHP member. This is the Elkman NRHP infobox generator, which creates the NRHP infobox for a new page, which you cut and paste into your new article. It serves up data from one big download of NRIS data that was performed on January 23, 2007. The January 23 date should be left in the footnote reference provided as part of its output.

Also, the new Elkman county list table generator creates a wikitable in the new/evolving format of NRHP list-tables.

[edit] Official text and photo documents

Official sources available for many NRHP sites include the NRHP text document, the corresponding NRHP photos document, and, in some states, correspondence between owners and the state and/or Federal offices involved in listing. The NRHP text document may be labelled a NRHP Registration form, or it may be labelled a NRHP Inventory/Nomination form. For NRHPs that are also National Historic Landmarks, there may be a National Historic Landmark Nomination form instead of, or in addition to, the NRHP text document. The photos are black and white. These are the official, definitive sources on some aspects of NHL sites. For example they contain official descriptions of the area which is included in the landmark, which might not be available anywhere else.

[edit] NRHP text document
  • For National Historic Landmarks, especially, the National Park Service's NPS Focus search site is a good place to start. It provides access to the original text description and photos of most NRHPS that are also National Historic Landmark sites, for most or all sites that are also National Historic Sites, and for some NRHPs that are neither.

Some states provide scanned copies for all of their NRHPs.

For NRHPs where a complete scanned version of the NRHP text and photos is not available on-line somewhere, the Reference Desk of the National Register of Historic Places will provide a photocopied hard copy, to be sent out by postal mail, upon request.

[edit] State specific sources

  • For Arkansas, it is possible to visit the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program in person and make copies of NRHP nomination forms and other documents.
  • For New York State, the NYS Office of Recreation, Parks and Historic Preservation (NYSORPHP) provides scanned versions of the NRHP text documents, NRHP photos, and NRHP correspondence with owners of properties. The interface requires Javascript on your computer. In the New York's State and National Registers of Historic Places Document Imaging Project search access screen, you have to select "Basic" and enter Basic criteria such as name "Grahamsville" and county "Sullivan" in the search form, and then click over on the right at RESULTS to get the search to run. Not entirely intuitive. It may be then that a javascript icon shows up for a while, and then you typically get a list of the 3 documents available (text, photos, other). Then clicking on one of them, in Firefox at least, you get a new browser window with a wide but short scrollable window showing about one vertical inch of the scanned document. You can then choose to click on the printer icon and print to a PDF file, in order to save it on your computer and to read it more conveniently. (If you do not already have a PDF writer on your computer, you can download a free one at www.pdf995.com). The new browser window shows a hard URL that can be used provide a hard link from a wikipedia article to a specific file, such as Grahamsville Historic District NRHP text for the article Grahamsville Historic District.

[edit] Multiple Property Submission (MPS) documents

PDFs of Multiple Property Submission documents are available from the National Register Information System (from the Main Menu, click on Documentation, then click on Multiple Covers(Historic Context)).

[edit] National Historic Landmark additional information

The National Park Services NHL search site provides access to a webpage summary for every NHL site, including for archeological sites where the NRHP text is not made available. This often including short statement of significance of site based on the NRHP text. The NHL webpage sometimes also includes current and past status information for sites that are threatened.

This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on the NHL name for the site, which may differ from the NRHP name for the site shown in the NRIS system. When an NRHP site is also a NHL, the NHL name should usually override the NRHP name in the NRHP infobox of an article on the site. However, awkwardly wrapped names such as "McKinley, James, House" should be unwrapped to "James McKinley House". Alternative names for a site should appear in the beginning text of the article.

This NHL webpage summary is usually authoritative on date of NHL designation, which may be manually added into the NRHP infobox generated by the Elkman infobox generator. However, there exist errors in this webpage system, which may extend to dates. Some of the errors have been reported to the National Park Service and are under review. A working list of some known or apparent errors with names of sites appears here. A similar list of issues with dates of NHL designation appears here.

[edit] Other Sources

The Historic American Buildings Survey and the Historic American Engineering Record provides photos and sometimes substantial text records for many sites that are NRHPs.

Locations of NRHPs in Kentucky in Indiana are pinpointed at http://www.metromapper.org/index-historic.php.

[edit] some but not all National Park Service photos are public domain

Some National Park Service webpages (within nps.gov domain) include photos that are NPS-owned and are public domain. But the NPS is clear that it uses, with permission, some copyrighted pictures, and those do not go into the public domain just because the NPS uses them. Some say from the "National Register Collection." Those would be okay to use. There may be different ways for them to say it, that they own the negatives, that they have ownership and put it in the public domain. The National Park Service copyright-related policy statement, at http://www.nps.gov/disclaimer.htm states, under Ownership, that "Information presented on this website, unless otherwise indicated , is considered in the public domain. It may may be distributed or copied as is permitted by the law. Not all information on this website has been created or is owned by the NPS. If you wish to use any non-NPS material, you must seek permission directly from the owning (or holding) sources. NPS shall have the unlimited right to use for any purpose, free of any charge, all information submitted to NPS via this site except those submissions made under separate legal contract. NPS shall be free to use, for any purpose, any ideas, concepts, or techniques contained in information provided to NPS through this site." So they are clear that some of the images they use are NOT public domain, but ones that are suggested to be NPS-owned are public domain.
