The result was Further debate required - This genre will not appear on the Heavy metal template at this time. Deizio 01:16, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Note - This one was close, a "vote count" here gives 11 deletes and 9 keeps, which would be a "no-consensus, keep" in AfD. However, after analysing the rationales of both the keep and delete votes, there is no indication that this title definitively describes a core genre of metal. I would suggest that the questions of whether this is "classic" or "traditional" metal, and (as Iron Chris states) whether this is actually a genre or a period, need to be addressed first.

[edit] Symphonic Metal
- Keep A core genre, not a subsidary or cross-genre term. This article and Gothic Metal both show what we are aiming to accomplish with this clean up, in moving stubs into the main articles. Deizo, please 'read' the article. Ley Shade 02:28, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Delete, still have concerns about this being "core" and too close to Gothic metal. The article does assert that this is distinct but also describes it as combining several other genres. The (relatively small number of) bands on the list therein are identified solely as Symphonic metal, while some stubs of sub-genres can be moved in here which are both important. A better article with some more notable bands in the list, also defined on their articles as Symphonic metal, would be great in asserting this as "core", which for me demands both a distinct sound and popularity, with plenty of notable exponents. LS, I appreciate you feel strongly about this but I'm not yet moved from the debate in the previous discussion. Deizio 03:12, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
-
- Minor, accept it's distinct but not "core" Deizio 21:33, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Delete (cross-ref); a genre that lumps together symphonic power metal and symphonic black metal is surely considered cross-genre? In my opinion it really doesn't qualify for being on the template. Symphonic power metal is close to gothic metal or power metal, and symphonic black metal is close to, well, black metal... I don't see the need of adding this on the template as well. --IronChris | (talk) 14:56, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Very Important Note
This poll has been moved here from the project talk page, and it's "rules" and closing dates unilaterally changed by Ley Shade. As such, the original votes which were "carried over" and the rationales behind them were made under different rules to the ones below. This alteration to the poll does not reflect a consensus of those who began the poll, and I fear the usefulness of the original exercise has been seriously, perhaps irrevocably, damaged.
In the original poll we were aiming to strip down the template to the "core" metal genres, in order to agree a common position and facilitate consensus when additions or alterations to the template were proposed. It was never intended to be a popularity contest or a place to promote your own personal tastes.
The votes were to decide which genres would be on Template:Heavymetal and also which section of List of heavy metal genres a given sub-genre would fit into. As such it was possible to vote in one of three ways:
- Keep, for sub genres to go on the template and the "core" section of the list
- Delete-Minor, distinct metal sub-genres but not major enough to go on the template. These would go in the "minor" section of the list
- Delete-Cross-reference, cross-over and mixed sub-genres which would not go on the template and would in the "cross references" section of the list.
While it is important for members of the project to participate on this vote, it is also important that members understand why they are voting and what they are voting for. To paraphrase what Ley Shade personally declared on the project talk page, "...if "cross-reference" genres like speed metal are included on the template, then all the cross-referenced genres will have to go on".
If the result of this poll is to be very inclusive about what counts as a core metal genre, it will be very hard to object to metal-related genres, sub-genres, sub-sub-genres and cross-referenced genres which have a main Wikipedia article (i.e. everything on the Heavy metal list for starters) being placed on the template.
[edit] Overview
This page is for voting on the inclusion of genres on the Heavy Metal Template, and will act as a guide point to future work regarding other projects that the group chooses to partake in. The simple voting rules are below.
[edit] Voting Rules
This poll will close on Sunday, April 30th. Any votes after this period will be dismissed, so please make sure to vote before closing if you want to vote.
Please vote only keep or delete. If you feel like abstaining from a specific genre, simply dont vote on it. If you wish to comment or debate the genre, please do so on its section of this talk page.
Please mark all votes clearly. Please specify your choice before you make a comment on the reason for your choice.
Please do not use sockpuppets or meatpuppets to over vote. Suspicious votes will be checked, and forfieted if sockpuppets or meatpuppets have been used.
Please be fair to the views of others. Different people will vote different ways. If someone votes in disagreement with you, please use the Project talk page to discuss their reasoning with them.
Do not make personal attacks. Anyone making personal attacks of any kind will have their votes refuted and will be reported to an admin.
Do not harass other users into voting in your favour. Anyone proved to be doing this will have their votes refuted and will be reported to an admin.
