Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent/To Do

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's a list of the Kent-related articles which need more work and then nominated (for those not yet Good Article rated). Our main initiative on this front is to tackle the Top and High importance articles (but please do feel free to contribute wherever you feel so inspired). We will be attempting to get the quality of all of these up to A-Class (that is, barring minor edits or new information, they should be "complete"). Depending on length and the availability of sources, the goal may be Featured Article status (FA).

Kent Top Start ?
  • — Turn lists into prose, or move to appropriate sub-page: list of places of interest can go on the list of places in Kent page.
  • — Get rid of the headings in the polical divisions page: a single 2-3 sentence paragraph does not need its own section. The subject is largely historical, and most of those divisions would go better on the History of Kent page, either keeping an approx. 3 paragraph summary in the Polical subdivisions section, or abolishing that section and incorporating the info in the history and government/politics sections.
  • — IMO industries fits better with economy than with physical geography.
  • Either:
    • — Move the settlements section as a sub-section of geography and write a 2-3 paragraph summary of major settlements and the important things in/about them.
    • — Add a transport/communications sub-section to the geography section.
  • Or:
    • — Delete the geography header and make physical geography a top-level header (like it is on many other counties)
    • — Make a "Settlements & communications" section.
  • — Delete the "Ceremonial county" section: that one sentence belongs in the introduction. This article is supposed to be describing all aspects of the county, including Medway (though noting that Medway is administratively independent). See for example how Poole and Bournemouth are handled in the Dorset article, or Southampton and Portsmouth in the Hampshire article.
  • — Cite sources!
  • — 2-3 more photos

Ashford, Kent High Start ?
  • Create "People from..." paragraph and move to List of people from Ashford, Kent
  • Improve the Sport" section by changing list to prose
  • Improve the Geography section with details of the town's position relating to the Weald, iron, chalk downs, rivers and transport (motor and rail) etc see Sandbox It might also be useful to have a section showing the constituent parts of the town - ie surrounding estates (cp Park Farm, Kent article)
  • Change the Ashford, Kent#Education section from a list to prose, with a sentence or two about the more notable historic schools and points of interest.
  • Move Future development of the town section to new Development of Ashford, Kent page, leaving a paragraph or two, with a {{main}} link
Canterbury High Start ?
  • — New "Geography" section, that would also include info on geology & landscape, climate, etc.
  • — New Culture section could include subsections Tourism, Sports, Arts, Architecture etc and incorporate Education
  • — Is mode of transport the best way to order a transport section? Consider whether it would work better rewritten as a paragraph or two each on local and (inter)national transport
  • — An economy section could including statistics such as GDP and unemployment, and info on industries and major employers
  • — One or two short sentences does not make a good section, either expand or merge sections
  • — Prose is better than lists
  • — Photographs will improve an article
  • — Reference any detail (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent/Citing sources)

Dover High B Perhaps - now that I have done some considerable work on the article, it could be re-assessed? Peter Shearan (talk) 15:22, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
  • To move up to GA level, it will need to be nominated at Wikipedia:Good article nominations. Although, there's still a lot of expansion and sourcing needed before it's ready for that. Epbr123 (talk) 16:07, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

List of places in Kent High Start ? I'm afraid that, in spite of the MfD concensus, I still query the use of the term "place". One dictionary definition which is what I am trying to get at is: A position which is occupied and held; a dwelling; a mansion; a village, town, or city; a fortified town or post; a stronghold; a region or country[1]. More importantly, the Wiki article Place only talks about the US Bureau definition. A hamlet doesn't appear there - whereas the list of Kent geography stubs has many settlements which are also included on the "Towns and villages" listings, but are not either of them! I really do think that we need discuss this again Peter Shearan (talk) 07:49, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Royal Tunbridge Wells High Start ? This article needs a good deal of work to bring it up to standard.
  • It is top-heavy with lists -particularly the two lists of people and the External links - see below
  • the introductory paragraph should be just that - a summary of the article. Anything to do with the borough (eg population) should be kept for that article. Town twinning is not for here either - a Culture section might be the answer
  • the history of Tunbridge Wells does not properly begin in 1606, and there was some while before anyone lived here (see later on in the article). The site itself should be considered - eg stone quarrying went on here in Roman times
  • the town name deserves a special para (Toponymy?)
  • there must be a Geography section - where the site of the town is considered, and the underlying geology = the springs.
  • too much of the article reads like a tourist pamphlet - "the Pantiles can be found ..." "grand Georgian hotels". And there is always the assumption that "prim middle classes" and the "bastion of the middle classes and comfortable bourgeois" are what is the perception of the town. Readers of the article may be from anywhere, and just because in the past the media might have put that about, it means nothing if you are not "English". The "Staying and Eating in Tunbridge Wells" makes the point far better than I can - we are not the tourist industry.
  • it is the norm for schools to refer to the List of schools in Kent and this para to be used for extra comments - no list
  • and the same goes for people lists which should be combined and moved to a standard List of people from Tunbridge Wells (compare List of people from Dover, since there are 74 names here.
  • also far too many External links - some are not referred to in the text and many are tourist-based; three are photographs of the town
