[edit] Top importance

Suggestions for the Top importance classification should be listed below. If after fourteen (14) days a consensus is reached, the article's project tag can be updated, and the section can be moved into the archive.

[edit] Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway

I'm not sure if the Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway article should be rated Top or High importance. Similar attacks in London and Spain have been rated High and Top respectively. Opinions? Torsodog (talk) 14:52, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ainu

I believe that the article on the Ainu people should be classified as Top Importance. The article does not currently have an importance rating. They are a very prominent indigenous peoples, both in Japanese cultural studies, and in terms of their role at the international level (for instance, with the passing of the UN Declaration on Rights of Indigenous People). Apatheticresistance (talk) 17:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] JSDF, diplomatic relations, others

Propose that Japan Self-Defense Forces be made Top priority, along with some of the diplomatic articles: Foreign_policy_of_Japan, and those pertaining to the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Korea, Germany, China. Perhaps others in that vein. The UK and German pages strike me as the weakest of this group for top priority (being mainly of historical interest), but all of the others strike me as both historically and currently relevant. On a different note, what are thoughts on making Anime and Manga Top priority? They seem to fit the bill quite well.--Monocrat 20:06, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I support making the self-defence forces and foreign policy top importance, but I'm less convinced about the individual country relations. I'm also a little confused as to how we tag pages on the daughter projects (like anime and manga, but also individual pages within those projects). Dekimasu 07:13, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Granting that those for the UK and Germany shouldn't be Top, there have been a lot of developments lately in Japanese relations with China, South Korea, and the United States: riots, protests, and official snubs over Yasukuni and textbooks in the first two cases, the Kurile dispute and WTO accession with Russia, and renegotiation of the security treaty with the U.S. But if there's disagreement, it's no big deal either way. :)--Monocrat 15:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC) I

The JSDF and main foreign policy articles have been made Top importance. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 08:26, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Do we want to add Japan Defense Agency, the civilian agency that controls the self-defense forces? Scheduled to become a ministry next week, and probably a topic for international attention. Fg2 09:10, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
This article has been made Top importance. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:34, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure I agree with the top importance for the defense ministry, but I won't object to it if there is widespread support here. Dekimasuよ! 11:16, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cities

Tokyo and Kyoto are listed as top-importance articles. How do we feel about other cities? Yokohama, Osaka, and Kobe come to mind. Dekimasu 08:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I think all designated cities should be Top importance. I also think that any core city should be at least High importance. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 08:19, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
I have listed all of the designated cities as top importance. I think they are also prime targets for articles that can be improved to good-article or featured-article status. The information is out there and shouldn't be hard to find, and these articles are in a pretty remarkable state of disrepair. Maybe this could be advertised somewhere as a group project? [edit] Found: Minamoto no Yoshitsune

He is an important figure in Japanese history, but I don't think he is the kind of household name that would make him top importance for WPJ. Hirohito, Oda Nobunaga, or Tokugawa Ieyasu might be more appropriate articles to add to the top importance class. I suggest a reassessment. Dekimasuよ! 22:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

I support making Hirohito, Oda Nobunaga, and Tokugawa Ieyasu top importance. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Why Nobunaga and not Hideyoshi? I'll certainly admit that Yoshitsune is not nearly as stereotypically representative of Japan as Tokyo, sakura, Mt Fuji, Kabuki or sumo, but he certainly is one of the most common (popular) figures in literature, drama, and legend. I'm not particularly peeved at Yoshitsune being removed from "top" status, and I'm not posting in order to argue that he be re-elevated, but I do think the whole thing is awfully subjective. Shouldn't Yoshitsune or Yoritomo be of equal importance-status as Nobunaga & Ieyasu? LordAmeth 19:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Hideyoshi would be fine too. To me the major issue is visibility — if the average Wikipedia user who knows nothing about Japan might be looking for more information on the topic, I tend to think it should be listed as top importance. Dekimasuよ! 20:19, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

When talking of importance, is it with the view of "important to Japan" or "important to the world"? Tokugawa probably has the most name recognition of the bunch, but even he would probably be unknown by people uninterested in Japanese history. I always sort of thought of the Top Importance category as "things my mother might know about Japan", which gives it a go for sushi, Geisha, Akira Kurosawa, etc...When it comes to historical figures, I think only Hirohito and some important Prime Ministers would rank Top Importance, those people who have had a world impact. The rest of them are better suited to High Impact, having only really been important to Japan.MightyAtom 01:21, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

That makes sense, and I'm cool with that. It does tend to create odd biases towards things which are not actually as central to the culture and history as the average person might think they are (e.g. geisha and sushi) and towards a more contemporary set of things - Koizumi is arguably far less important than a great many historical figures in shaping Japan, but is more of a household name because of his having been so recently PM. But I think in the end, you're right. The articles that are important to the project, i.e. the articles that are important to keep in good condition because more "average" readers will be looking for them, are these sorts of things. LordAmeth 08:02, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I've changed Hirohito to top importance as a result of this very old discussion. Dekimasuよ! 05:59, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Found: Toyota

Toyota was elevated to top-importance class on December 3. I don't have a strong feeling about it, but it is in a different vein from the other articles we currently have listed as top importance (widely-known cultural phenomena/aspects of the country itself/cities). Thought I would note it here. Dekimasuよ! 11:22, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

I think Toyota is high enough profile to warrant Top importance. They have had a huge worldwide impact, as well as a large impact on the economy of Japan itself. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:05, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Noh, Kabuki

Suggest elevating these to top importance. Dekimasuよ! 13:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

I support making these Top importance. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:04, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
I also support these. MightyAtom 01:22, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I've changed these to top importance. Dekimasuよ! 06:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
