Wikipedia:WikiProject Isotopes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This Wikiproject is focused on creating entries on all known isotopes. There are about 3100 known isotopes and 580 isomers, so this is quite an undertaking, similar in scope to the astronomical objects project.

  • Oo64eva (06/28/05): The authors of the "Chart of Nuclides" have informed me that it violates copyright restrictions to use their data in Wikipedia. Therefore we cannot use the "Chart of Nuclides" distributed by Knolls Atomic Power Lab. It is only to be used as a personal reference and nothing more. Thanks for your cooperation.
  • Splarka (6/02/05): Awaiting standardization of infobox and isotope table.
  • oo64eva (6/02/05): Creation of Isotopes of hydrogen will be held off until an infobox can be standardized so I'll be working on that.

[edit] Scope & goals

[edit] Undertaking

There are 3100 isotopes and 580 known isomers. There will not be stubs made on each and every isotope! There will be individual pages for each element's isotopes for example Isotopes of hydrogen will list all of the known isotopes of hydrogen with a bit of data on each one. Isotopes of particular note would get their own page.

[edit] Long-term goals

The main goal of this project is to finish by October 1, 2005. An ultimate deadline is December 31, 2005. It would definitely be nice to start off 2006 with a complete directory of all known isotopes!

[edit] Short-term goals

Create basic isotope pages which will make up the skeleton of the first part (elements 1 - 55) of the isotope project.

[edit] Processes

[edit] Critique and suggestions

All criticism, ideas, suggestions, and alterations of templates, images, or standards will be heard/made during a specified period. After that period, it will go to vote. After a vote has decided its standard, it will go into effect. The only way to make a change is to vote on the change, in which case it will no longer be a standard until the new period of critique and voting is over.

[edit] Voting

A 66% or greater vote is required for a proposal to become a standard. If no proposal gets a 66% or greater vote, the issue goes back to the drawing board.

[edit] Naming conventions

[edit] Isotopes of element articles

All page titles for the Elements of isotope pages will follow this format:

Isotopes of element

The element name is in lowercase as with the standard wiki style of article naming. Other variations such as Isotopes of Element will redirect to Isotopes of element and so on.

[edit] Tasks and responsibilities

Each member of this project should choose one or more tasks that they feel they can contribute best. Keep in mind how much time you are willing to devote to this project and plan accordingly.

[edit] Data acquisition

Scours research material of isotope data and enters it into the tables. Checks for consistency with isotope data used at Wikipedia:WikiProject Elements.

[edit] Entry author

Writes the entries on each isotope.

[edit] Graphics and table editor

Uses the template to place a table in each entry. Creates the PNG graphics of each isotope chart at the top of the table.

[edit] Organizer

Keeps various category and list pages organized so other Wikipedians don't get mad at us.

[edit] Project management

Maintains the focus of the project and acts as a liaison between members with different responsibilities.

[edit] Proofreader

Makes sure that things are spelled right, grammar is correct, tables appear as they should, and catches errors such as a helium-4 title on the lithium-7 table. Proofreaders who have the expertise may fix factual or data inaccuracies.

  • Proofreader.
  • I would like to contribute more, but I can't spare the time.
  • Leaving the project on June 20, 2005. Some 29% of the timebox has passed (start date May 9, end date October 1) with essentially nothing achieved, so I've lost confidence. This project will not deliver as planned.
  • I'm not leaving in a huff! If the project gets on the road after all, I will probably rejoin.
