Gardner Pinnacles [4] | Mid | March 27, 2008 | Stub | Needs to be broken up into sections. One section with info on geography/geology, one section for history (though by nature not as prolific as some of the other NWHI), on for ecology. Maro Reef [5] | Mid | March 27, 2008 | Stub | Of all the NWHI, Maro Reef is the most looked-over and ignored in terms of sources and documentation, so we have to take what we can get. Ostensibly should have a history, geology, and ecology section just like the others, but its a coral reef, not really an island. If need be, geology and ecology sections will be one. [edit] Resources
Here is a list of resources that you can go to to find stuff about the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. There are many places that you can go to find generalized summaries of the islands, but for more in-depth information, it gets a bit harder.
[edit] General reference
- Evenhuis, Neal L. (ed.); Eldredge, Lucius G. (ed.) (2004). Natural History of Nihoa and Necker Islands, Bishop Museum Bulletin in Cultural and Environmental Studies; No. 1. Honolulu, Hawaii: Bishop Museum Press. ISBN 1-58178-029-X.
- Rauzon, Mark J. (2001). Isles of Refuge: Wildlife and History of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Honolulu, Hawaii: University of Hawaii Press. ISBN 0-8248-2330-3.
- Note: Rauzon's bibliography includes more than 180 references. This is a valuable resource for surveying the literature.
[edit] Natural history
- Kay, E. Alison, ed. (1994), “The Unique Terrestrial Biota of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands”, A Natural History of the Hawaiian Islands (2nd ed.), Selected Readings II, Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, ISBN 0-8248-1659-5
[edit] Archaeology
- Nihoa and Necker Islands
- Emory, Kenneth P. [1928] (2002). Archaeology of Nihoa and Necker Islands, Bishop Museum Bulletin in Anthropology; No. 11 (orig. pub. as No. 53). Honolulu, Hawaii: Bishop Museum Press. ISBN 1566475651.
[edit] Websites
- NavigatingChange.org, the website of the voyage that the Hokule'a took a few years back, is a good place to start.
- ...and this is their archive of videos that contain alot of good info and perspective.
- The official FWS website on Midway Atoll contains a wealth of info on Midway Atoll.
- website on the National Monument is the source about the National Mounument.
- As for news about the NWHI, you can go to this site.
- Go here, scroll down to "NWHI" and pick "Starr, F., K. Martz, and L. Loope. 2001. Botanical Inventory of Kure Atoll. Report prepared for State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Honolulu, Hawai'i" for basically all of your Kure Atoll needs.
- Invasive Species in the NWHI: go to the page directly above, but click on Martz, K., F. Starr, and L. Loope. 2001. Status of Non-native Plants in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands."
- Jane Resture does for histories of islands what airplanes did for travel. What you want is a little lower than halfway down the page.
- Not really a gem of info, but the Multi-Agency website is the joint site of the NOAA and the USFWS on the NWHI.
- For Nihoa, you can go to this page to look inside Isles of Refuge: Wildlife and History of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (see general reference section). The book goes on to other islands, but the pages that they let you look at are only about Nihoa.
[edit] Images
Compared to finding textual info, finding photos for these articles is a breeze. Since most of the people that go to the NWHI are government-employed, the photos that they take are free-for-use. Just search google, and as long as it is clear that a USFWS or NOAA, or perhaps USGS employee took the photo, you can upload it.
Additionally, Kim and Forest Starr have released all of their photos under the CC-Att. 3.0 license.
