Wikipedia:WikiProject Etymology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WikiProject Etymology is a WikiProject aimed at improving Wikipedia's coverage of etymology. The scope of this project includes articles about etymology itself and related topics (e.g. etymology, loanword), articles about the origins of particular words (e.g. List of U.S. state name etymologies, names of the Greeks), and etymology sections within articles on other topics (e.g. Ginkgo_biloba#Etymology).

[edit] Template

The template {{WP Etymology}} should be placed on the talk page of articles to mark them as within the scope of the project:

This article is within the scope of the WikiProject Etymology, an attempt at improving etymologies on Wikipedia. If you would like to participate, please visit the project page, where you can join the project and see a list of open tasks.
??? This article has not yet received a rating on the quality scale.
??? This article has not yet received a rating on the priority scale.

Instructions:

  • {{WP Etymology|section=yes}} is used if the article is not primarily devoted to an etymological topic, but contains (or should contain) a section discussing an etymology.
  • {{WP Etymology|class= }} is used differently depending on whether the entire article is within the scope of the project, or just a section:
    • If the entire article is within the scope of the project, use |class=FA/A/GA/B/Start/Stub/NA, just like other WikiProjects.
    • If |section=yes, then the section can be rated as |class=missing (the article doesn't give an etymology, but should), |class=incomplete (an etymology is given, but is unreferenced, or only one etymology is given when there are multiple possibilities), or |class=good.
  • {{WP Etymology|priority= }} functions differently from other WikiProjects (it's based on To do, by priority). The |priority= is a number from 1 to 9 based on how many other articles link to the article, which can be found by clicking "What links here". The number is then:
    • 1 for articles with more than 500 references to them (i.e. more than 10 pages of links in the "What links here" page)
    • 2 for more than 250 references or more than 5 pages of links in the "What links here" page
    • 3 for more than 100 references or more than 2 pages of links in the "What links here" page
    • 4 for more than 50 references or more than 1 page of links in the "What links here" page
    • 5 for more than 20 references
    • 6 for more than 10 references
    • 7 for more than 5 references
    • 8 for more than 2 references
    • 9 for articles with 1 or 2 references

[edit] Categories

Articles about a particular word's etymology should be placed in Category:Etymologies or one of its subcategories.

Articles whose title is a loanword should be placed in the appropriate subcategory of Category:Words by language.

Articles dealing with the field of etymology itself belong in Category:Etymology
