From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Points of interest related to Europe on Wikipedia
Basic list - Portal - Category - WikiProject - Stubs - Deletions - Cleanup

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Europe. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting.

You can help maintain the list on this page:

  • To add a new AfD discussion (once it has already been opened on WP:AFD):
  • Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  • You can also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Europe}}<small>—~~~~</small> to it, which will inform users that it has been listed here.
  • There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
  • Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
  • You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Europe.

Please note that adding an AfD to, or removing it from, this page does not add it to, or remove it from, the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page, before adding it to this page.

For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Luan Bexheti (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) (delete) – (View AfD)

Unnotable actor(?), doesn't meet WP:ENTERTAINER notability standard. Nadda in Google News. brewcrewer (yada, yada) 15:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

  • It looks like you understand Albanian. I don't. Is the link that you provided about a documentary that he was involved with or is it about him. Basically, has he satisfied the "significant coverage" requirement of WP:BIO?--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 00:46, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Delete Seems like a guy on his way up, but doesn't meet any of the criteria of WP:ENTERTAINER yet: 1) no significant roles, nor roles in multiple significant films; 2) no evidence of large fan base or cult following; 3) no evidence of "unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment". While I don't understand Albanian, the link Eastmain refers to above only mentions him twice, among a list of other names, which makes it pretty clear that while he is somehow associated with the documentary, he is probably not the focus of it.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 04:56, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Aarhus University Shooting

Aarhus University Shooting (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) (delete) – (View AfD)

Hoax/attack page. No sources available for this event. There appear to be several people named Flemming Nielsen, but none of them are referenced in this context. BradV 16:02, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Keep and cleanup. The IHT reference confirms the date, university, number of victims slain and wounded, weapon, shooter's age, shooter's length of association with the university, and shooter's fate. The rest of the article may be fictitious. I've removed all the US-centric tags from the article, since it didn't happen in the United States, and will make some other obvious improvements. Jclemens (talk) 18:06, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
One good RS, along with a number of non-RS which can be googled, confirm the event took place--it is not a hoax. This article does include details that are not confirmed by the English-language reference, however. I can't read Danish and Babelfish doesn't offer it, so we could use the help of a Danish-speaker here to look at the second listed source. Jclemens (talk) 18:26, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment. There is a copyright issue: the text is a word-by-word translation of the Danish-language reference [2]. The author of that reference claims copyright, with the proviso that "Partial quotation of the text is allowed only when clearly linked or referenced" to his page. I would think that requires more explicit citation, including quotation marks, than is currently done on the Wikipedia page. The reference itself is not obviously a reliable source: it is a list of Danish murders maintained by an individual as a subpage of the web site of a cluster of apartment buildings. It does list its primary sources at [www.bredalsparken.dk/~drabssageridanmark/html/webmaster.html]. It specifies that "some names have been altered", which in itself would seem to disqualify it as a source for the name of the perpetrator. The event is arguably notable and deserves a page, but the current page needs to be re-written based, to start with, on the IHT reference. --mglg(talk) 20:00, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Rewrote the article to remove unsubstantiated names and eliminate copyvio. It's pretty stubby now. Jclemens (talk) 21:56, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
  • There's an article at fyens.dk that also mentions a Flemming Nielsen as perpetrator of the shooting, so the information from drabsager seems to be correct. (Lord Gøn (talk) 17:12, 13 June 2008 (UTC))
  • MERGE This might be applicable as a section of another article, but with google only turning up one English language source, It doesn't appear to have much on its own. HatlessAtless (talk) 21:22, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
What would you like to merge this with? BradV 21:23, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
List of school-related attacks already seems to contain most of the content of this article which can be derived from the IHT source. School shootings is the only other mainspace article that links to it. Jclemens (talk) 21:30, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tõnu Trubetsky

Tõnu Trubetsky (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) (delete) – (View AfD)

This is the real name of an extremely prolific spammer User:Bloomfield. This article was written by him and his many socks (note that earlier history of the article is at Tony Blackplait and that page did not survive a deletion attempt at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tony Blackplait).

I have been trying to clean up Bloomfield's mess for a very long time. He posted rambling genealogical articles about early Lithuanian dukes. See, for example, this version before I cleaned up the article. Note how it corresponds with self-posted genealogy at his band's page at http://www.dcc.ttu.ee/Bands/english/get.asp?ident=909 (which dates from 1996).

His real life identity does not show any signs of notability. The article has many interwikis - all by him (possibly except lb:Tony Blackplait - translated from English?). Any external links are probably written by him. As I said, he's very prolific. He lists many books, films, bands, etc. but none of them check out. At first glance it looks ok (as it had three years to root in), but after more careful investigation it does not hold water. Renata (talk) 14:07, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I also list related articles:
  • Delete all per nom BanRay 19:03, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep Tõnu Trubetsky, I've just asked my younger brother, who is more familiar with Estonian culture and he says Trubetsky is indeed a rather notable personality over here (even gave me a book written by him), so I guess we can keep that one, as for the rest - I'm not sure, this is certainly not my area of expertise. BanRay 21:19, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Speedy Keep Tõnu Trubetsky; keep Vennaskond or merge with Tõnu Trubetsky. The conflict of interest is, indeed, annoying, and I've had to intermittently deal with it for more than three years (see here). The COI is a separate issue, but I would say block or ban the user(s) involved. We've previously been through this notability discussion regarding Trubetsky: See User:Andres' previous AfD comments, which IMHO should have been sufficeint criteria to keep the article. I verified the bibliography section myself (i.e. looking up Trubetsky's books in an online Estonian library catalog, and obtaining the ISBN codes). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 00:13, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • P.S. Note that Sue Catwoman (The Flowers of Romance album) is notable for (ostensibly) placing on the Estonian Latvian music charts, though this still awaits attribution. Note also that this presents a situation in which an album is notable but the band involved (by previous Wikipedia consensus) is not; suggest that the Estonian band called "Flowers of Romance" be rolled into the Vennaskond or Trubetsky articles. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 00:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong Delete, per Renata's reasoning. Cleaning up this puppeteer's mess is hard enough without the rest of the community hampering those who do by finding excuses to keep his vanity article. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 05:02, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong keep. Tõnu Trubetsky is a famous personality in Estonia. He is primarily known as the leader and vocalist of the band Vennaskond. He also is known as a partisan of punk and anarchism. He is an outspring of the princely family of Trubetskoy (see also ru:Трубецкие). I can confirm what the anonymous contributor said above: Vennaskond is a famous band in Estonia ("Insener Garini hüperboloid" and "Pille-Riin" are indeed well-known songs in Estonia). The Flowers of Romance is less known. Its story is explained, for example, here (in Estonian). It involves almost the same people as Vennaskond but it is intended to be a different band. I am not sure if there should be a special article here about them. In any case, it is far more known in Estonia as the original band The Flowers of Romance, and the Estonian Wikipedia has an article about them (et:The Flowers of Romance). The Estonian article has probably been written by involved people and needs cleanup (it includes some mystification and glorification). Due to mystification by the members of the band it is difficult to find correct information about the band in English. But the article I referred to above should be trustworthy. The spamlike activities by Tõnu Trubetsky and possibly others should be kept apart from the notability issue. Andres (talk) 07:13, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong Delete The article has been around for 2 1/2 years, yet it has absolutely no independant sources for any of the claims. And most of the claims are not notable - he's been doing redlinked songs for redlinked albums with redlinked people in redlinked bands one of which actually managed a whole 5 gig tour with another redlinked band. He's appeared in redlinked films, most of which are self-made or directed by redlinks. He's written articles for redlinked magazines, as well as relinked books with redlinked co-authors from redlinked publishers. If he's really as important as he's trying to make himself sound then there should be some independant sources - yet his only source is his own Myspace page. Edward321 (talk) 23:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete the whole family - I see no coverage, let alone coverage in reliable sources. Abstain from the bands, however. Some of them have links and references, and since I'm on terra incognita I won't opine on their usefulness.--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 05:34, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong keep. Trubetsky not only vocalist. He is productive writer also [2]. His position in Estonian culture environment is very meaningful. Singer, writer, poet, actor, director... And delete??--HendrixEesti (talk) 07:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong keep. for estonian music he is maybe more important than John Lydon for punk music at all -- Ahsoous (talk) 09:19, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong keep. Tõnu Trubetski is a legendary punk-musician in Estonia. He is less known outside Estonia, because the lyrics of his songs are mostly written in Estonian. The article needs just a clean-up. --Metsavend (talk) 13:09, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Note: This debate has been included in the list of Bands and musicians-related deletion discussions. -- Fabrictramp | talk to me 18:08, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Note: This debate has been included in the list of Estonia-related deletion discussions. -- Fabrictramp | talk to me 18:08, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep Vennaskond (and a weak keep or merge for Tõnu Trubetsky), neutral for now on the rest. I've never heard of this band myself before, but searching Google for vennaskond punk (in Estonian, Finnish and English) turns up enough seemingly independent sources asserting notability (e.g. [3], [4], [5] and [6]) that I'm willing to believe them. (And by the way, The Flowers of Romance (Estonian band) should probably be a redirect to Vennaskond, since they appear to be essentially the same band under different names.)Ilmari Karonen (talk) 18:40, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Lisbon Treaty - Irish Ratification (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) (delete) – (View AfD)

This article should be deleted on the grounds that is it wholly inappropriate. The creator of this article stated that: There is confusion in Ireland over whether this will be good for the country or otherwise, and an excess of information from many extreme points of view is adding to this. This article has been created in order to invite an impartial combination of sources into a brief summary to help the general public. This is the job of the Irish Referendum Commission not Wikipedia. Wikipedia is there to provide factual articles on the Lisbon Treaty / Referendum / Ratification not help the general public make up their minds on which way to vote. Wikipedia is not a blog or a forum for discussion. Finally, the points in the article about the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty are not unique to Ireland and will affect the whole of the EU if the treaty is ratified. Comment The previous AfD ended in no consensus, and I hate to say the Delete arguments in the last round were somewhat stronger than the Keep arguments. • Comment I am the admin who refused the speedy deletion. Notability can be established using sources in other languages, provided they are reliable sources. The problem is that I can't tell if the sources are reliable or not. -- Mattinbgn\talk 09:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Very weak keep, the E4 is really a big company (the biggest engineering company they claim on their site), but the guy is not the President he is just the Chairman of the board. The company is a holding that means that they have bought a few Soviet time companies that are more or less self-govern, thus, they are much less prominent then their subsidiaries. The guy was indeed proclaimed "The best young manager of Russia" in some year, they have references, it may be seen as a claim to notability. But on the other hand we do not have an article about this E4 group nor about their President. It is weird to have an article about the chairman of the board. The article is badly written as a resume or commercial advertisement. In other words I don't see the reasons to delete the article nor any convincing reasons to protest the deletion. • Weak Delete If the references have more documented instances of notability, the article certainly does not reflect it. If they exist and no one who speaks Russian cares to add them, then it is unlikely the article would have survived a PROD. Jclemens (talk) 18:14, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete. If he were truly notable, there'd be English language references; what is notable in Russia may not be notable elsewhere. Renee (talk) 18:25, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Comment. I don't know whether or not the subject is notable in Russia, but I do know that if he is notable in Russia he is notable enough for English Wikipedia. The "English" in "English Wikipedia" simply means that the articles are written in English, not that there are only articles about English speaking subjects. Phil Bridger (talk) 21:01, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

This goes unmentioned in standard textbooks on Swedish history, and considering that Sweden was an elective monarchy throughout the Middle Ages, there is no reason to believe in such a claim without very good sources. The boxes asking for (additional) referencing have been on this page since March. This page vaguely hints at the existence of sources at the bottom under the heading "Material", but the author mentioned there is a highly productive Swedish historian specialized in mediaeval biography and genealogy who has published several books and hundreds of articles. Without specification such a vague reference is useless. My guess is that whatever sources somebody may come up with are quite likely to support the genealogy, but the basis for the existence of a page such as this is the assertion of a dynastic claim and continuity. There are probably hundreds of thousands of descendants of the Sverkerian dynasty. Unless somebody can show evidence that this particular line has, or claims to have, some particular right to the throne based on this descent, it can not form the basis for an article.")
