[edit] Underlying policy
Pages should be classified under their most relevant subcategory or subcategories. Supercategories would be populated only by subcategories, and will be kept as empty as possible.
[edit] Classification
Singers should be classified by language and discipline using the format <mando/canto> <discipline>
- List of disciplines (all under the supercategory "artist"):
- singer (sings, doesn't play)
- rapper (raps, doesn't sing)
- instrumentalist (plays, doesn't sing)
- songwriter (writes and/or composes)
- singer-songwriter (sings, writes, and plays his/her own songs)
Notes: Out of all the disciplines, please put an artist into the ONE that fits best. If an artist has his/her own albums, and has written music either for him/herself or for others, he/she is a singer-songwriter. A minimum of five category members should be present before the category is created.
[edit] How to populate
Place articles in the bolded categories.
C-pop
- Mandopop artists -> create "List of Mandopop artists"
- Mandopop singers - supercategory: Mandarin-language singers
- (Mandopop instrumentalists)
- (Mandopop songwriters)
- Mandopop singer-songwriters - supercategory: Mandarin-language singers
- Mandopop musical groups (includes groups and bands)
- Cantopop artists -> create "List of Cantopop artists"
- Cantopop singers - supercategory: Cantonese-language singers
- (Cantopop instrumentalists)
- (Cantopop songwriters)
- Cantopop singer-songwriters - supercategory: Cantonese-language singers
- Cantopop musical groups (includes groups and bands) - supercategory: Cantonese-language singers
- C-pop albums
[edit] Cleaning up
The Nationality/Discipline category tree is a complete mess. Having genders Format: <nationality> <discipline>
Here, instead of "artist," the main term is "musician." Populate the category that best fits the type of artist being profiled. If an artist is a singer-songwriter, populate BOTH <nationality> singer and <nationality> singer-songwriter. Don't fill in genders; I personally feel they're a bit absurd.
Nationality/gender/discipline (NGD) tree How to populate, using Taiwan as an example:
Taiwanese musicians
- Taiwanese singers
- Taiwanese singer-songwriters
- (Taiwanese rappers)
- Taiwanese musical groups
Try to pick as specific a category as possible.
[edit] To do
- Move all artists in Category:Cantopop to Category:Cantopop artists. The only pages that should remain in Category:Cantopop are award organizations, and songs/items that contribute greatly to the evolution of Cantopop.
