Wikipedia:WikiProject Chemistry/Gold Book workgroup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gold Book workgroup is a pilot project of WikiProject Chemistry, attempting to improve the referencing of chemistry-related articles to the IUPAC definitions contained in the Compendium of Chemical Terminology (more commonly known as the "Gold Book").

The worklist contains 327 Wikipedia articles, corresponding to 5% of the entries in the Gold Book. The Gold Book entries have been chosen at random, to give an idea of the difficulties which might arise if the project is expanded beyond this pilot stage.

[edit] What needs doing

Each Wikipedia article (where it exists) on the worklist needs to be checked against the corresponding entry in the online edition of the Gold Book. If necessary, the definition is added or amended, then afterwards the worklist is updated.

  • If the article contains the IUPAC definition and a correct reference link to the Gold Book, it is OK. The status code on the worklist can be changed to {{GoldBookCheck|status=Y}}.
  • If the article contains the IUPAC definition but not the correct reference, the reference can be added using <ref name="Gold">{{GoldBookRef|title= |url= |year= }}</ref>, with information that can be copied and pasted directly from the worklist.
  • If the article does not contain the IUPAC definition, this will need to be added, usually in the an expanded or paraphrased version. Please do not quote the definition verbatim unless it is absolutely necessary to do so (for example, to compare the wording with an alternative version). If the definition cannot be added straight away (e.g., editor is not familiar with the subject area), the status code can simply be changed to {{GoldBookCheck|status=N}} to indicate that the article needs attention.
  • If the article does not exist yet, it will need to be written! If this cannot be done straight away, the status code should be changed to {{GoldBookCheck|status=N}} to indicate that the article needs attention.

Some of the entries in the Gold Book are simply redirects to other entries, while others are clearly marked as having been superceded. Please do not link to such entries! All that needs to be done for the time being is to change the status code on the worklist to {{GoldBookCheck|status=R}}: this allows us to see how many entries are affected, and so estimate the amount of work that remains to be done.

If you find that the Wikipedia article listed on the worklist does not correspond to the Gold Book entry, feel free to change the listed Wikipedia article. In particular, in will be necessary to check that the correct disambiguation is used. Please do not choose a different Gold Book entry from the one that is on the worklist, as this will introduce a statistical bias into the pilot project. The worklist contains both simple cases and difficult ones, hopefully in the same proportions as would be found in the complete Gold Book.
