This is a task force for Wikipedians dedicated to categorizing articles that are uncategorized. If you enjoy eliminating links from Category:Category needed or Special:UncategorizedPages, then join this organized effort to make every article on Wikipedia belong to a category.

To avoid getting discouraged, consider the following entry from the logs:

Alternatively, if you are particularly comfortable with a particular topic, you can help assign permanent categories to stub articles relating to France, to India, to Italy, or to pharmacology.

[edit] Hints and tips

  • Consider using an edit summary like Categorizing article - [[WP:UNCAT|You can help!]] (or, manually type in something like [[WP:UNCAT|+cat]] for the edit summary if you like to save your clipboard for category titles [since some of them are quite long])
  • Take your time: it is more important to ensure a useful, precise categorization of articles than to clear the backlog at high speed. In particular, please avoid the use of automatic or semi-automatic methods.
  • Use the most specific category you can find and remember that an article can often be placed in multiple categories. While even partial categorization is of value, try to avoid placing articles only in very large categories that are not typically used for browsing, such as Category:2001 albums or Category:Living people.
  • Search Wikipedia categories using this tool. Note: search stops after the first 1,000 entries.
  • Look at similar articles to see what categories are available. Clicking on internal links in the opening sentence or paragraph of the article is often helpful.
  • When in doubt, use a temporary higher-level category, and add to Category:Better category needed so that future editors can refine the categorization.
  • Stub and maintenance categories are considered only "temporary" categories; stubbed articles should be included in non-stub categories as well.
  • Be aware that sometimes a tagged article has already been categorized. If this happens, then all you need to do is to remove the {{uncategorized}} tag.
  • Check the edit history for vandalism (someone may have removed the article's categories).
  • It is not considered necessary to add the {{uncategorized}} template to stub-sorted articles, but neither is it forbidden to do so. It's preferable to simply add a category instead. Alternatively, add {{uncategorizedstub}} or {{uncatstub}}, to enable prioritisation of categorisation effort between entirely uncategorised articles, and those with sorted stub types.
  • If you need help categorizing a specific article, mention it on this talk page (also see Category:Category needs checking).
  • Check if the article needs to undergo one of the deletion processes (speedy/prod/afd), or if merging/redirecting/renaming the article would be appropriate. Also, watch out for articles with copyright violations.
  • If an article has both a {{prod}} tag and an {{uncat}} tag, then either categorize it anyway or remove the uncat tag and put it on your watchlist, making sure it gets deleted.
  • Wikipedia just added a drop-down list feature to her search box – use it to your advantage. You can check to see if a category exists without navigating away from the article. Sometimes more than one category shows up after you've typed it in – this may mean the category in question is a parent category, and that there may be a more specific category the article can go into.

  • If the first name is not the surname: use
{{DEFAULTSORT:surname, givenName}}
  • Remember to use the birth/death/living categories for articles about people, e.g.:

  • Naturally, also categorize the person based on his or her occupation, nationality, etc.
