An album article may include audio samples to illustrate the music on the album. Audio samples in the appropriate format can be uploaded by any registered user.
All copyrighted samples must be accompanied by a fair use rationale for each article they appear in. Samples must never be used to illustrate lists, for example track listings, discographies or lists of singles. Samples from an album may only be added to articles for either of the following purposes:
- To accompany a section of descriptive text about a particularly notable song on the album.
- As a rule of thumb, the song should be notable enough to have its own article, according to the notability guidelines for songs.
- The song should be closely identifiable with the album, for example a single released from the album, or the title track.
- Articles about compilation albums, greatest hits albums, mixtapes etc should not contain samples of songs which were previously available on another album.
- The album article should contain a substantial section of descriptive text about the song.
- To accompany a description of the style of the album.
- The sample should illustrate a specific, point about the style of the album, made in detail in the article text.
Samples should be placed in a box, to the right of the appropriate paragraph of text, using the following markup. The resulting text is shown on the right. Note that captions should end in periods only if they are full sentences.
sample box start multi-listen start multi-listen end sample box end
