[edit] Q41

16 rounds into 2006 some are happily planning september parties others well they are already thinking 2008 looks good. Anyhow back to the question

  1. where
  2. when did the 2006 premiership season start,
  3. between who,
  4. what was the score,
  5. who kicked the most goals. Gnangarra 07:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
  • West Coast 11.18 (84) def St Kilda 9.12 (66), at Subiaco on Thursday, 30th March 2006. Hayes kicked 3 goals. -- I@n 07:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Yep, you must of had the WCE homepage open in the background Gnangarra 07:45, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q42

Should be easy: What do Barry Hall, Fraser Gehrig, Matthew Lloyd and David Neitz have in common? -- I@n 08:41, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

They are all big full forwards and have won a Coleman Medal. Jasrocks (talk) 08:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
they are all still playing(kinda) Gnangarra 08:52, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Coleman Medal was the one. Yours Jasrocks. -- I@n 08:56, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q43

OK, hope this isnt too hard. Nick Riewoldt once listed the top 2 defenders that 'are on top of his list' in terms of how good they are. Who are they? Jasrocks (talk) 09:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll take a guess at Leo Barry and Mal Michael. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 10:14, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Nope, but one did play for Brisbane. Neither right! Jasrocks (talk) 10:18, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I'll go for two players with the gadget extender arms: Dustin Fletcher and Darryl White. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
I would have thought Worsfold, John and White, Darryl Gnangarra 13:30, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Nope none of them. One of them played for Brisbane and only recently retired, one is still playing at Geelong. Off to school, want be back for about 8 hours. Jasrocks (talk) 21:48, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
John Scarlett and Justin Leppitsch - you're off to school?! Hey, you're making me feel old! Just call me pops. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 23:29, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
John Scarlett, do you mean someone else? The other is right Jasrocks (talk) 06:16, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, that should be Matthew Scarlett - I'm still living in the 70s. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:35, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Yep thatz right. Over to you pop :-P Jasrocks (talk) 07:06, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q44

We've already broached the opening of the 1990 season, and my ill-fated charter flight to Melbourne (although admittedly it is not in the same league as that of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper). The following week I made a more usual trip down the Hume Highway (by Horseless carriage) only to see them thumped by the Eagles at the Western Oval, who Mick Malthouse had only just taken over as coach. Then I managed to see the third round game, this time against Sydney at the SCG. This win by the scraggers represented a few firsts: the first win by the Bullies since the failed merger attempt, Terry Wheeler's first win since taking over as coach, and something else... what was special about this Footscray win? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:14, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

1st win at the SCG Gnangarra 07:31, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Correct! (sorry it took me so long to get back) ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 13:09, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q45

I played 75 VFL/AFL games for two clubs 9 games with first club and 66 with the second (over 5 seasons). I was captain for my final 2 seasons playing 22 games, all of these where in my first season as captain. Who am I? Gnangarra 17:07, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Steve Malaxos ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 02:48, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
correct Gnangarra 03:00, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q46

We know that Chris Grant debuted in the first round of 1990. As it happens, someone else debuted in that round three victory against the Swans, picking up a stack of kicks from the wing. He too was a skinny 17 year old kid from somewhere a little further west than Daylesford. He would go on to play over 150 games with the bullies before ending his career at another club. He was best known for being able to deliver the ball long and precise with either foot from the defensive 50 to set up many attacks. Indeed there were seasons when he was amongst the highest for kicks out of 50 and at the same time for kicks into 50. Had the ability to kick a goal from outside the 50. Who was that 17 year old kid? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:05, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Leon Cameron Gnangarra 06:21, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Correct again! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:04, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q47

What event occured on the 21st October 1992 ?

The swans were voted to be kept in the AFL or something like that Jasrocks (talk) 08:26, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
The other clubs agree to draft concession and financial assistance that eventually brought Ron Barassi to Sydney as coach. Gnangarra 08:34, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q48

Which AFL player has been on Dancing in the Stars and which clubs has he been at? Jasrocks (talk) 09:46, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure this is way wrong, I think I'm getting my shows mixed up, but it's all that comes to mind: Richard Champion, he was only at Brisbane (which shows I am way off track). ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:08, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Think he was on that It Takes Two singing thingy. He is a current player. Jasrocks (talk) 12:20, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
collingwood player Gnangarra 13:16, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Brodie Holland Gnangarra 13:26, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
oh and Fremantle Gnangarra 13:29, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
You got there. Brodie Holland danced on Dancing with the Stars a couple seasons ago and came about 4th. He played 36 games for Freo and at the end of the 05 season had played 94 for Collingwood. Over to you. Jasrocks (talk) 23:23, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q49

Yesterday West Coast def Adelaide, by 82 pts the third highest margin,

  1. what is the highest winning margin who won
  2. what is the highest score by who

Gnangarra 01:14, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

? Do you mean highest margin between WC & Adel? or just this season, or all teams all seasns?
the 3rd highest margin between the two clubs? so who has the highest margin (and of course they would have been the winner on the day), and who of the two has the highest score - but only in games between the two? or who of the two has the highest score against all-comers? having already banned all South Australians, we may need to extend the ex-communication to everyone living west of Broken Hill :-) ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
  • between WC and Adel whats the highest margin, highest score (its not the same game). Though if you want i'll accept both of Geelongs scores for all clubs, but (i want exact the score who they beat) Gnangarra 04:13, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Both records are held by WC, only the highest margin is now required Gnangarra 04:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Highest winning margin: WC 26:21:177 d Ade 5:12:42, margin of 135 points (ouch!). Highest score WC 29:13:187. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 05:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Over to you, those figures should keep the South Australians quiet for a little while. :) Gnangarra 05:25, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q50

Hmmm, let me think, I should do something in keeping with the number 50 - perhaps I could mend some bridges. Who won the 1950 SANFL premiership and who did they beat? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Norwood won the premiership, but the SANFL site doesnt have who the played :{ Gnangarra 06:21, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Neither does the Norwood FC site :{ Gnangarra 06:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
sorry, but it is not a complete answer! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:43, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Norwood 15.16 (106) d. Glenelg 8.11 (59) Jasrocks (talk) 07:00, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

sorry Gnagarra - Jasrocks has got it! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 07:49, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q51

What was the first recorded year that Aussie rules footy was played in New Zealand? (ps. sorry Gnagarra, didnt see you answering). Jasrocks (talk) 08:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

  • I found this in an article on footy in NZ in wikipedia: Australian Football was introduced to New Zealand in 1876. A hybrid match was played in Dunedin, New Zealand. First half played according to rugby rules, second half according to Victorian Rules. So I'll offer 1876 as my answer. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 10:13, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q52

In 1983 a controversy developed regarding the legality of the then VFL's clearance system. That will make a good questione one day, but I like to explore what happened the following year. In 1984 Footscray decided to play some fun and games of their own and recruited a player from South Australia mid season outside of the proper processes. In hindsight it was an absolute waste of time, the player in question lasted no more than 5 minutes when he came on off the bench, and was quite possibly the slowest footballer I have ever seen in my life (my one and only recollection of him is chasing an opposition player who drew away from him with every bounce of the ball). He was not to ever appear again in the VFL - who was this mystery player? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 13:16, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

John Riley (although I didn't think he was that slow)? --Roisterer 13:29, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
That's it! 13 minutes is pretty good for a tough question - he was clearly better than what he showed that day - he was probably underdone - but for all the controversy, it was hard to understand why the bullies had gone out on such a limb - and you have to recall at the time I would have been standing there on the outer in the freezing cold like any young male one-eyed supporter witnessing yet another home loss - I had yet to develop the impartial analytical mind I now possess! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 20:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Oddly enough, I was going to ask a question on John Riley myself. --Roisterer 05:30, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q53

Which current AFL player is married to a former World Champion Rower? --Roisterer 05:43, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Josh Francou. πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 05:51, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
There I was thinking that this question would last longer than 13 minutes. Josh Francou is married to the former Jo Lips, 2001 World Champion Rower. They have a couple of kids now so expect them to be sporting champions themselves. --Roisterer 06:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Every smart recruiter has their 16th birthday marked in their long range diaries! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC) ps sheer fluke on my part

[edit] Q54

Of course the number 54 reminds us all of that momentous day 52 years ago. But, I have one more question to add to my collection of debuts by skinny 17 year old kids that would go on to become out and out champions - although in this case - I am not sure how skinny he would have been. He debuted in 1951 and kicked a goal with his first kick in league football, upon which the tough backman who was playing on him told him in no uncertain terms: do that again and I'll break both yer legs! He never played a game in the reserves for the whole of his 20 season career. Who am I talking about? πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Surely you talking about Ted Whitten? --Roisterer 13:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 23:00, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q55

Well, this quiz is turning into a Port/Footscray speciality quiz, which isn't neccesarily a bad thing. Anyway, the number 55 reminds me of the first Port Adelaide player to transfer to the VFL. He debuted in the VFL in 1978 and played 55 games in an injury interrupted career before returning to Port to end his career. Who am I talking about? --Roisterer 14:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Max James The-Pope 16:22, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Max James, indeed! Your turn, good Sir (even if you are a Fremantle supporter). --Roisterer 13:44, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I have left a message on Mr Pope's talk page - I fear that he is getting over excited about Freo having almost sewn up a spot in the 8 - although I guess 5 straight wins is a decent effort in anyone's language - especially for a team that has the words "heave ho" in their club song! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:12, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q56

What was the name of the trophy that Fremantle and Essendon played for in the very early years. (and Pippi, of all the supporters, I thought a Bulldogs person would be the most patient... 51 years and counting... doesn't make 11 years seem that bad!) The-Pope 13:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

  • the Albert Thurgood Challenge - mate, I'm beyond patient - I've given up all hope! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 13:14, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
    • 12 minutes. Too easy... will try harder next time. And never give up hope Pip... as a South Freo Bulldogs fan I have a bit of a soft spot for the other Doggies, this year I reckon you've done well given your injuries The-Pope 15:16, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q57

I have to admit, I shed a bit of a tear last weekend. We all know that Chris Grant broke the doggies' games record on the weekend, previously held by Doug Hawkins (1978-1994), who in turn broke Mr Football's record (1951-1970, non playing coach in 1971, with EJ jnr playing a year or two later for the remainder of the 70s). Ted broke the record of another great bulldog, who finished playing the year before Ted debuted. So in 4 players, we have an almost unbroken line of record holders from 1935 to the present day - and people try and down play the place aussie rules has in Australian history and culture! Anyway, who was this great bulldog that held the record which EJ Whitten broke? πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 22:27, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Arthur Olliver (232 games). Snottygobble 00:10, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Correct - well done (although I thought the record was higher than 232 games) πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 01:36, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, gotta run; you guys are going to have to wait until tomorrow for a new question. Snottygobble 01:48, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q58

In their long and illustrious history, Fremantle has played for premiership points on fourteen different grounds. On how many of them have they won more than one third of their games? Snottygobble 01:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm guessing 2 - Subiaco and the WACA -- I@n 01:22, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Guess again. Snottygobble 01:24, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
I think I've got it - add Waverley Park to the above. -- I@n 01:27, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Correct. Fremantle have won 10 from 18 at the WACA, 65 from 124 at Subi, and 3 from 7 at Waverley. At all other grounds their record is 1/3 or less. Pardon the schadenfreude. Snottygobble 01:53, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q59

I coached one VFL team for 415 games over 21 years with a top of the table coaches win-loss ratio of 66.99%. Who am I? -- I@n 02:55, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Q60

I'm not sure how difficult this next question is: What was so special about Round 19, 1981 (of the then VFL)? πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:13, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Sth Melbournes last home game Gnangarra 03:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually that's not a bad guess, and may well be possible, but I'm unable to confirm that. Do you know that for sure? There is another event of almost equal importance that occurred that round, that affected all 6 games and had far-reaching consequences. If you are able to confirm that that was the Swans' last home game - it's yours! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:46, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
It was a guess and its wrong they played two more games rnd 20, against Geelong and rnd 22 against Nth Melb which was the last at lake oval, rnd 19 was at the MCG against Carlton. Gnangarra 05:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Round 19, 1981, was the week the umpires "went on strike" for not getting paid more for having to work on Sundays. So a whole raft of umpires debuted in that round - many of them from junior ranks - and several never umpired again. - Bricks J. Winzer 06:13, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
A new player! Welcome to the quiz, Bricks. Snottygobble 06:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Well done Bricks, that's it! I trust you will return to test us all! Re the umpires' strike, I didn't know this but Chris Mitchell debuted as an umpire that week and he went on to umpire some 340 games. Of course I will always remember him as my Vice Captain in the Maidstone under 11s. πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 10:51, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
As an umpire did Chris Mitchell make a good U/11s Vice Captain? --Roisterer 12:34, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
I can't remember that much detail that far back! (except everyone seemed bigger and better than me) I was only in it for the pie nights back then - one of which was held at the Footscray clubrooms, which was a great thrill. I do remember that he started becoming an umpire from around the age of 15 or 16, and I would occasionally see him around the neighbourhood in all white, perhaps heading off to do a local game. I remember an article on him a few years ago and they asked him who he barracked for as a kid. After trying to avoid the questoin, he said Williamstown - I think we all know that to be a half truth at best - take it from me, you only ever followed one team when you lived where we lived! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
