[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles

As a result of the above-named Arbitration case, the Arbitration committee has acknowledged long-term and persistent problems in the editing of articles related to Israel, Palestine, and related conflicts. As a result, the Committee has enacted broad editing restrictions, described below.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length; bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict; bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics; restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to this decision; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently WP:AE), or the Committee.

These editing restrictions may be applied to any editor for cause, provided the editor has been previously informed of the case. This message is to so inform you. This message does not necessarily mean that your current editing has been deemed a problem; this is a template message crafted to make it easier to notify any user who has edited the topic of the existence of these sanctions. Please bear in mind these principles when you contribute to articles on the topic.

Generally, the next step, if an administrator feels your conduct on pages in this topic area is disruptive, would be a warning, to be followed by the imposition of sanctions (although in cases of serious disruption, the warning may be omitted). Hopefully no such action will be necessary.

  • Just because nobody's working on the article doesn't mean that it doesn't belong. Issues such as POV disputes can almost always be fixed without deletion. I see no reason to delete this one just because it's unbalanced — the topic is notable, and the sources are reliable.   • The sources are FAR from reliable, as demonstrated by the overwhelming support for its deletion. It draws from highly biased sources (like Uri Avnery) throughout the article. It's politically motivated and not right for wikipedia. You wouldn't find this in any Encyclopedia. Now, if you can find some people who are willing to correct the article, then fine. But until then, it needs to go.
  • There's still potential in the article, even if the sources are swayed; I can't imagine 150+ sources all being biased. The article may need a total rewrite, but I don't think it's beyond repair. I don't know much about that field, so you might want to ask someone with more experience in similar articles. In relation to this, might I suggest that you spend a little more time learning about how Wikipedia works before you jump in with both feet in an effort to set the world to rights? You've been an editor for two days. I think that's a bit premature to be trying to nominate very contentious articles for deletion. -- ChrisO (talk) 23:25, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

  • I agree with the above user; hang around here a while longer, familiarize yourself with the project a little more first, especially when dealing with contentious articles like that. Furthermore, the article's gone through seven AfDs and was kept each time. Listing it an eighth time might be considered disruption (I can see your points and I wouldn't think it disruptive). Clearly, you're here to help the project, but it's best to start out small. Help out in smaller ways, like fixing typos or creating new stub articles first.   • Okay, I didn't know you'd been hanging around anonymously. Still, the article may need rewrite, but that's no reason to delete it outright. One thing you can do is place a {{rewrite}} tag on it if you think it needs to be rewritten, or discuss your issues on the talk page and/or at Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel. If you need to update the nomination then leave the original in place and make additions or updates below. Also, if you have an account, use it all the time instead of flipping between it and your IP at 70.181.148.148. Thanks for the message on my talk page. As you're a new user you may not know that there used to be a whole series of "Allegations of apartheid..." articles about various countries. They were deeply tendentious and have almost all been deleted (with much difficulty); I played a significant role in that process. The only one to have survived is "Israeli apartheid" , which has existed for a long time and has survived seven previous nominations for deletion. Frankly, I don't hold out much hope that it will be deleted this time either. I have to say, though, that you've perhaps been a little unwise in jumping in and trying to get it deleted so soon after you created your account. -- ChrisO (talk) 23:17, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
ChrisO did in fact play a significant role in the process. He was part of a campaign to make sure that Israel was the only country that had a separate "apartheid" article concerning it, and in at least one case he corruptly abused his administrative powers to delete an article. In other cases, he got other administrators to do his dirty work. So, yes, he certainly has been involved. So you might want to view any advice from him in that light. I would agree that it is unlikely that the article in question will be deleted, but that is not because it should exist. It is because some people will do everything they can to make sure it remains, in disregard of Wikipedia's efforts to be a reputable encyclopedia. 6SJ7 (talk) 23:58, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
