I like answering questions - even lots of them - from new users. It makes a refeshing change from bashing people with {test} tags! Also, I had about 2,000 questions to ask when I joined a year or so ago and slowly and painfully found the answers for myself... or am still slowly and painfully finding the answers for myself! Thanks for the thanks! ➨ REDVERS 21:44, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 69.142.224.135 Vandalism

For more details on this topic, see User talk:Zahid Abdassabur#Anon vandal.

Once again the user at this IP address has altered Template:Socialism to include his own hoax, despite repeated warnings to stop (including one by yourself yesterday), which makes 11 times so far. In accordance with the stricture against reposting a vandal on WP:AIV when an admin does not resolve the matter in the way I'd like, I post it here. Thank you for taking the time to consider this. -- Saaber 21:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:205.240.227.15

Could you please deal with him, the second his last block ended today, he got right back in his groove re-adding stuff that has been deleted in his absence such as "Material by dissident authors in Cuba has to be smuggled out and presented on line by Cubans living in exile. These repressive actions of the Cuban government have drawn much international condemnation e.g Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451 author ‘[1]." Thanks, --Colle 22:37, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

I have posted the issue on the administrators notice board twice, with little outcome. I think it is now up to the admin community to deal with this --I have no idea how to go do that "request for comment". The whole thing is extremely frustrating from my point of view. If the situation was reversed, say, it was a 'communist revolutionary' doing the equivalent on American articles, the editor would definatly would of been banned years ago. To me, not only is this geographic bias, but a political as well. Sorry about exploding, but I had to write about this to someone! I also wrote a bit on my own talk page. Thanks, --Colle 02:00, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
I spent a good hour digging up evidence for the RFC. It is just a small portion of it all, or course. Hopfully you and Jay can finish it off?--Colle 23:50, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
I am not sure on how to continue. I've brought up a bunch of evidence, but the user is trying to respond to each one of them, even though half the time his statements have little basis on reality. What do I do from here?--Colle|Image:locatecolle.gif|Talk-- 22:01, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

[edit] NPA warning

I accept that some of my comments during recent heated editing are somewhat inappropriate but I had already stated my intention to withdraw from the contested articles before the NPA alert was raised. What does stick in my craw is that two new editors have colluded to wage war on a number of articles and have not been officially warned or reprimanded. I have raised an RFC after deciding to withdraw an RFA as premature. I now regret the latter as I am now the one in the poo even though I was trying to keep a lid on biased editing of articles. I seriously doubt I have seen the last of this since User:DarrenRay has seen fit to post my real name on his user page which I consider a far worse offence. Should I lodge that at WP:PAIN? Garglebutt / (talk) 01:04, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Garglebutt

For more details on this topic, see User talk:Garglebutt#Re: warning retraction.

My name is Benjamin Cass. On Garglebutt's Talk page, near the top is a personal attack on me. I would appreciate you removing the attack. I understand that User:talk pages are not the same as articles and I respect that but I presume if I responded in kind with an attack on him that it would be deemed unacceptable. Can you please remove it? --2006BC 01:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I respectfully request you remove this unwarranted warning from my talk page. This is already being dealt with by another admin[2] who does not believe this is a personal attack. 2006BC is seeking others to intervene as he is not satisfied with the way it is being handled. Garglebutt / (talk) 11:30, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
I have already responded to Fuddlemark and provided more information than I wanted to to make clear that there is more here than meets the eye and I simply want to get away from being stalked by these guys, but at the same time I refuse to be bullied out of articles simply because other editors are sanitising edits[3] to suit their vested interests. Garglebutt / (talk) 11:54, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Politics which seems to have brought some cooler heads to the article. I had also lodged an RFA but withdrew it a point were the reversion of edits and addition of POV statements had died down. Unfortunately it proved to be the lull before the storm. Garglebutt / (talk) 11:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
You may also wish to browse the links I posted on Fuddlemark's talk page where unlike 2006BC and DarrenRay who freely display their name, they tried indirect intimidation by posting my real name on DarrenRay's user page despite my decision to edit under a pseudonym. Garglebutt / (talk) 12:00, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
I kind of wanted to avoid further confrontation as, despite the possible benefit to the project, I find myself falling into the malaise of people who try to move onto more productive inputs and not get dragged down into the bitterness of edit disputes. I may shake off that malaise depending on what happens over the days to come. Garglebutt / (talk) 12:22, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CSD M1

FYI, this applies to "an image that is a redundant copy, in the same image file format and same or lower resolution, of something else on Wikipedia.". PNG is a different image file format than SVG, and any deliberate modifications to an image (such as cropping and re-coloring) prevent it from qualifying under CSD M1 as a redundant copy. —David Levy 12:57, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Good shot for pointing that out. I assumed "redundant" as in purpose, not format. However, it's still IfD matterial for the same reason the SVG is. --LBMixPro<Speak|on|it!> 23:09, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

[edit] {{usertalk-sprotect}}

Hi there. When protecting a user/usertalk page, we have the above template. It helps keep CAT:SEMI. Whilst I'm here a couple of standard-issue reminders: please remember to regularly make sure you have lifted any protections of articles and the same for user talk pages. Protected user talk pages prevent new vandal fighter from joining in. (Disclaimer: I haven't checked whether you have any such old protections, so apologies in advance.) Thanks -Splashtalk 21:09, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] He's at it again

User:Croatian historian has deleted all of my posts on his user page again. Also, now he is accusing me of being a nationalist, even though I am half-Croatian and half-Serbian. That guy's just out of control.

Almost all of his contributions to Wikipedia are anti-Serb propaganda, and quite frankly, nationalist. Let me give you a few examples: [9], [10], [11], [12],... He accuses everyone who reverts his edits (including you) of "protecting" Serb propaganda and nationalism, even though he himself is promoting Croatian nationalism. Here's what he wrote about you: Lbmixpro (talk • contribs • page moves • block user • block log) - vandalize user pages, needs to be banned, Bormalagurski supporter. Now, we could waste hours and hours constantly reverting his edits (as so many users have done so far), or we could do something about this problem, now. [edit] Block on User:HereIsTWO

I blocked him/her because it is a self-proclaimed sockpuppet that argued that having multiple sockpuppets was not a violation of any policy at all. (See User talk:Nlu.) Based on the rationale and the modus operandi, I suspected HereIsTWO (and HereIsONE, HereIsTHREE, HereIsFOUR, and HereIsFIVE) to all be User:PoolGuy sockpuppets. (See also WP:RCU for more details on PoolGuy's activities.) I see no reason to unblock. Of course, you have to decide on your own. --Nlu (talk) 06:41, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User talk:Croatian historian

Could you point me to the policy which makes removing messages from one's own Talk page a blockable offence, or justification for page protection? I've unprotected the page. I'm worried that, in a dispute in which there's at least as much to be said against the other side, some admins are taking sides against this user. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:10, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

My opinion is the same as pgk's. --LBMixPro<Speak|on|it!> 19:23, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wrongful blocking etc.

In quite possibly the worst display of adminship I've ever seen, my user discussion page was recently blocked from editing and I was given a temporary ban on editing articles for Wikipedia. While I can't say I care too much about the slap on the wrist (I don't spend my days cruising Wikipedia, like some, so it wasn't a big deal), the reasons for it were not justified and were actually more harrassment than anything else. I had deleted several comments from a regular user named Drat, who had reverted one of my changes to an article and wrongly accused me of vandalism since he believed I was going off of an article written by the website SomethingAwful.com, an web site that I had not visited until he brought it to my attention. Drat and I had a small correspondence, and believing the matter to be settled, I deleted his comments from my user page. For some reason unbeknownst to me (perhaps a lack of a life), Drat patrolled my user discussion site (keep in mind that I, being a casual user, don't actually have an account, so he is spending his spare time keeping track of an anonymous IP's user discussion page) and decided to revert his comments back onto the site. I saw no reason for them to be there, since both he and I had read them, so I deleted them again. Drat then inlisted the help of another regular Wikipedia user to revert the site, accusing me of vandalism OF MY OWN USER DISCUSSION PAGE for deleting his comments. I do not see how this could be considered vandalism or a bannable offence, seeing as it is my personal discussion page and not related in any form to the Wikipedia other than in name. After going through this series of deleting comments and them being reverted, another user seemed to think that I was committing vandalism by removing vandalism notices (which, keep in mind, there were none of). So I went through this long back and forth battle, deleting these comments and accusations that had no merit over and over for the sake of cleaning house, while these users decided they needed to revert my site right back for some unknown reason. I have committed no vandalism at all. I assume one of the users in question (most likely Drat) got your attention on an admin board or some other way, and instructed you to block my site from being edited and to give me a temporary ban, which brings us to your, in my opinion, carelessness in use of admin powers. I honestly have no problem with the punishments dished out, since they are the common response to vandalism, but having committed no vandalism I felt that they were not justified. Also, I felt wronged since you did not investigate the matter before using your administrative powers (or if you did, you completely missed the fact that I committed no sort of vandalism nor did I remove any vandalism warnings). Just letting you know what's going on, and that I intend to restore my user discussion page to a blank slate after it is re-opened for editing to nonregistered users. This little fiasco has severely disenchanted me with Wikipedia and its user population. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.131.182.135 (talkcontribs)
