[edit] Nathan Abbey

I had thought he was a permanent transfer, but then it was announced that we only had room for 1 more loan player as we already had Abbey, Partridge, Wilson and Leary, and maximum was 5. If it was a permanent transfer, it wouldn't count towards the total amount of loans.

According to a pretty "in the know" fan on www.griffinpark.org, "Torquay have been doing us a favour and extending his contract there so we can loan him from them". We're always getting messages on the official site saying things like "we have extended the emergency loan of Nathan Abbey". One even said "we're waiting for confirmation from Torquay as to whether the emergency loan has been extended".

I get the impression that once he leaves Brentford he will immediately leave Torquay, but technically I think it is correct to say that he's on loan at the moment. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.109.146.44 (talk) 15:14, 22 January 2007 (UTC).

Thanks for your quick response. I'd pretty much agree with all of that - it is certainly only a technicality. Rumour has it we're going to sign Chris Weale this week anyway, so Abbey may not be with us for much longer. Good keeper though.

I have got a named account but keep forgetting to log into it! I'll have to tick the "remember me" box next time.

Thanks for the information. I am doing that now. --geniussansom 20:18, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Albert Hoskins

I note you have added a lot of detail to this article, although a lot of what you added is totally different from the information contained in the Duncan Holley reference book which I have now quoted in the article. I have taken the liberty of amending the article in line with Holley's book - In particular, his second name, place & date of birth, date of death are all different. Also, your edit[1] says that he joined Wolves in 1900, whereas Holley says that he left Southampton in 1908 and he was certainly playing for them in the 1907-08 season.

It's interesting that Holley makes no mention of him managing Torquay although he does give details of his time at Wolves and Gillingham. He also says that he stayed at Gillingham until August 1930. Even the Soccerbase details are contradictory, as this says that he left Gillingham in May 1929, but started at Torquay in March 1929.

Is it possible that there were two different people with similar names whose careers overlapped? Can you possibly let me know your sources or cite it in the article. If there were 2 different people, then we will need to disentangle their careers.

This is the problem with trying to create articles about players whose careers were a century ago - if only the internet had existed then! Best wishes Daemonic Kangaroo 12:01, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

p.s. Congrats on beating Grimsby - the only way is up!

[edit] Non-League Footballers Category

Hello. I agree with what you are saying and am considering other ways of adding these categories. Many of these players are uncategorized so I will use different ones i.e. nationality. Thanks, --geniussansom 17:22, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Colin Lee

Hi. I agree the date's weird. The reference there originally linked to an article created two days earlier where it said he'd been appointed permanently. Then it changed, so I thought I best change the date to match the reference. Might be better to link to the Torquay website? Personally, as he hasn't been appointed permanently, I think it would be better if stayed in the caretaker manager column. I know a successor might not come along for a while, but I think it's a more accurate description. Cheers, HornetMike 16:53, 7 February 2007 (UTC) Hmmm, is Keith Curle the new boss now? The BBC are using the term head coach, but he seems to be closer to the position of manager than Lee, from their descripton. HornetMike 14:47, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Soccerbase template

I note your comment and see that you have reverted the template. I was trying to arrive at a neater way of putting the apostrophe into the soccerbase link. As the template was originally designed there is no need to add the player name as the template will pick up the PageName automatically - only where the PageName is not the player name (e.g. it includes a suffix "footballer") is there a need to include the player name within the template. Your method means that you will have to include the player name (plus the " 's") within the template whenever you want the apostrophe shown.

In my opinion, even where a surname ends in "s" the correct use of the apostrophe is "apostrophe-s" and not "s-apostrophe" (if that makes sense). Thus it should be James's rather than James' . But as my local Church is called St. James's standing in St. James Road opposite St. James' Park, who knows!

By the way, have you seen what the apostrophe has done to Adebayo Akinfenwa - that's a total mystery. Best wishes & good luck against Lincoln tomorrow. Daemonic Kangaroo 12:55, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dave Bampton

My mistake. The user was removing DB templates from articles he created, so I assumed it was the case with this article and I didn't check the history. Sorry about that. Ytny (talk) 15:55, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Northwich Victoria

Thanks for reverting the vandalsim on Northwich Victoria. This particular bit of vandalism has been happening regularly whenever the article has not been fully protected during the last few months. I have been reporting whoever has done it is a sockpuppet. S/he has been avoiding semi-protection by creating sockpuppets. Ram4eva 16:00, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tom Johnston (footballer)

Hi WikiGull - hope you don't mind me asking a quick question on Torquay Utd. Do you know whether this Tom Johnston had ever played for Torquay. A history I have on St Bernard's F.C. by George Campbell says he played for the Gulls post-war, before managing York. The comment is quite brief and doesn't include details of his other playing or mangerial roles and I haven't found any reference to him playing for Torquay on line. Has Campbell got it wrong? Caledonian Place 12:53, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm not surprised to be honest. Thanks for your efforts. Caledonian Place 13:44, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#Regarding notability of Football (soccer) players

Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates on the subject I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. I think clearer guidelines are needed to avoid repeated inappropriate nominations for deletion and time consuming discussions. Cheers! StephP 22:05, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "I play in the managerial role, how about yourself?"

I note from the edit history of Gary Mills's article that you've had as much luck as I have explaining to Jonesy702 the complicated task of not placing "Manager" in the Playing position field in infoboxes. - Dudesleeper · Talk 21:54, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Commiserations

Unlucky about the relegation. Enjoy my one trip down to Plainmoor back in 97ish - hope to see you back in the league soon. HornetMike 14:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

  • I fully endorse those comments. Don't lose heart. 05:00, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Len Davies

My reasoning is as follows:

  1. The article is not, in my opinion, a stub. The fact that it can be expanded does not make it a stub. It contains information about his dates, place of birth and career and his subsequent life, it has categories and a succession box. It satisfies the criterion that most people consulting the article would be likely to find out the answer to their question.
  2. I believe you are misinterpreting the guidelines on linking years. Dates of birth and death have always been linked in the introduction to articles. What the manual of style says is that the linking of years does not affect users' date formatting preferences, not that they should not be linked. In fact, it gives examples of how Dates of birth and death should be formatted.

I hope this clarifies my reasons for reverting. Deb 20:22, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Nice job of expanding the article! Deb 11:49, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Willie Young

I moved Willie Young (Torquay United) to Willie Young (winger) as there is also an American football player by that name and I thought it best to disambiguate all three (the former Arsenal & Spurs player is now at Willie Young (defender)) and also as it suits him better as he also played for Villa. You might want to update your user subpage (which I have left alone out of courtesy) to point at the moved article. Qwghlm 21:45, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Grays Athletic F.C.

What about the ones Mattythewhite created, for example Matt Bodkin has never played a league game in his career?

Jimbo_online 11:14, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Missed that, I'll bear your points in mind for future pages.

In a word "No"! - this was added by a Bot a few weeks ago. Maybe the Bot's instructions are a bit screwed. I suggest that the tag is replaced by the WikiProject Football one. Daemonic Kangaroo 16:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Torquay United squad section

Hi. When I edited the squad I thought it was already in alphabetical order. I saw names beginning with H grouped together, and I never really noticed it was organised by position. Sorry, should have checked closer.. Mattythewhite 12:01, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Billy Fenton source

Hey. I was just wandering where you got the info from you added to Billy Fenton. Thanks, Mattythewhite 09:25, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Cheers, I'll have to get a copy of that. And with Graham, I'd recommend looking on this site for his Blyth stats. Change the 's2003' bit in the url to look at different seasons. Great site for non-league stats. Mattythewhite 09:41, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jack Smith

I notice that you are working on biogs for Torquay players and that you had more than one Jack Smith play for you. Do you know the year of birth of the player listed as Jack Smith (football player) on the Jack Smith disambiguation page? I think it would be good if we could rename him to Jack Smith (footballer born xxxx) as there are several other footballers called Jack Smith. Cheers. --Jameboy 21:23, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Noticed that you've done it now. I found it quite hilarious that they were born in the same year and had to be distinguished further. Bloomin' typical! --Jameboy 17:03, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Darren Moore (footballer)

This article has moved to Darren Moore so can you please update it on your list of TUFC players. Kingjamie 16:55, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Will Scott

I note that you have added a biography to this article which was nearly deleted recently. What was your source for this information? Could you add this into the references section.

www.allfootballers.com list a Walter J. Scott who played 3 matches for South Shields in 1921-22 (and also once for Ashington) - Is this the same person? (As the one they list is shown as being born in Willington Quay I guess it must be.) Happy editing. Daemonic Kangaroo 11:59, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Michael Evans (footballer)

Hey. I moved the article for the other one (Mickey) so it fell in line with his more common name, as according to "the book". Mattythewhite 14:27, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] York

Thanks for the advice. I've been wanting to get some more work done on that list, and that sounds like a nice idea. I'll probably give it a go when I add more to it, whenever that is. Cheers, Mattythewhite 15:41, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Manager templates

Ping!! I have reverted your changes to the AVFC templates. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Manager templates for my reasoning. Thanks. Woodym555 17:12, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anthony Lloyd

Yeah, they should be removed. The text looks a bit.. list like, in a way. I think I need to do the same to Alex Meechan, and some other York players too I think.. Mattythewhite 17:11, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Just to follow up on your comment... no, I don't have anything against Oxford United, or Swindon Town for that matter. I don't go in for the whole rivalries thing, to be honest. I've been a supporter of Reading since 1994, and there's not really been a great deal of history between the clubs since then for me to have developed any sort of personal opinion about them. In any case, back to the matter at hand, maybe I was going a bit far by saying the Conference National is an amateur league. But I was trying to draw the distinction that it's not a fully professional league, and therefore appearances at that level don't make a player notable under WP:BIO. robwingfield «TC» 00:19, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I can understand why my comment could have seemed inflammatory! That's the trouble with having debates in text... you can't always get an accurate feeling for how people are saying things because you can hear them or see how they're saying things... robwingfield «TC» 13:09, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey, great work on expanding Simon Milton's new article. I was wondering about the bar in Bury though, last time I saw it (a few days back) it wasn't called "Milts" anymore - are you sure he still runs the place? The Rambling Man 09:46, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd remove it for now, I'm pretty sure he got out of it - someone got stabbed in the neck (or similar) down there one time and I think that was the last straw... But do expand it with Torquay info etc. Good work! The Rambling Man 10:04, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Mark Ellis (footballer)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Mark Ellis (footballer), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Mark Ellis (footballer) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Mark Ellis (footballer), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself.
