Good we can cite that as well then :)

Criticism

From here

  • Their brief solos were just long enough "… to open another bottle of beer" (New Musical Express)
  • "They know they're like animals, and they don't want to appear any other way. In view of the many ugly frogs in heavy metal who think they are God's gift to womankind these Quasimodos even seem charming in their own way," commented Stereo Review in 1997
    • Actually, I'm not sure whether this is direct criticism. It is saying that [unsourced/unnamed] says that they are f'ugly, but others say "So what?!"
      • So are they seeing the band in 'Stereo' instead of hearing them in 'Stereo', that might explain a lot.
  • "See what I mean about NME?" said Hotep in 2007. Also, I'm having a hard time finding any reliable sources that have any criticism. Either they hide it away, or there just isn't any criticism. I prefer the latter. :)
  • Interesting feature here - Motorhead vs Korn - the 'head win
  • ... and from the same source - "they all sound the same" re: Kiss of Death, but then give it 8/10! So still no luck!
    • "This band still manages to slay most of the shit out there. The strength of this record simply acts as a reminder that Motorhead are living hard-rock legends." is pretty good though ;)
  • "If Ozzy Osbourne is the loony, bumbling godfather of heavy metal, Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister is the scary, twitchy, warty uncle" - classic! From here, which is an online version of a magazine, although it looks a bit amateur.
  • Lemmy about influences, starting here, at the question "E.C.: You've influenced a lot of the speed metal bands that appeared in the 80's..."
  • Extremely interesting, about show with BOC and "Best Worst Band" ("f'ked us for 2 years" says Lemmy) here
    • The desert shot on AoS photographed in High Barnet! :) added and cite can be used further with <ref name="PL"/>
    • And did we forget Tiswas in the article? yes but fixed.

Fame, acclaim and controversy

Hall of Fame petition petition list of current signatures - over 3.5K.

Hell's Angels connections? Seen as controversy by some, I suppose. And the Nazi regalia, and the profound explanation: "I collect it really as a safety valve to stop that form of government ever existing again." – hmm, but this applies to Lemmy controversy, I think, not Motorhead. Although, it could be controversy for the band as a whole. Anecdotage. Likewise with his adding in about "Overkill" on Everthing Louder Than... that fans being "diehard archivists, many of them, and they love shit like that..." (rambles on about rare vinyls) "They're never going to play them, though" ... "But then, I collect knives and I'm not going to stab anybody, so I'm one to talk!". (p.283 WLF)

Motörheadbangers snippets

Some of this may already be somewhere, but will put here anyway: probably quicker than looking at all the articles!

  • Original Jimi Hendrix Experience bass player, Noel Redding, was at 25th Anniversary show and appears briefly on Boneshaker DVD. Lemmy was roadie for JH, arrived in London with nowhere to live, found old friend Neville Chesters (another JH roadie) who offered Lemmy use of floor in Noel Redding's apartment.[7]
  • Lemmy's bass settings: Bass = off, treble = off, middle = full on, presence = 9 o'clock, volume up high! Bomber album sleeve says he played 4- and 8-string bass, but only ever played 4-string on tour.[8]
  • Filming of the "Whorehouse Blues" video was due to take place in a Stringfellow's club, but Peter Stringfellow objected to the song title and withdrew any involvement. This made the national press via Daily Star (apparently). With 24 hours left until the shoot, they found a club in Ealing.[9]
  • Motörhead are touring Europe from May to July, 2007 then a UK stadium tour in November with Alice Cooper and Joan Jett. (Wembley Arena=17/11/07) [6]
  • Lemmy is doing two dates in April in Seattle and Portland with Slim Jim Phantom and Danny B. Harvey under the moniker of "The Head Cat". [6]
  • Lemmy appears in Foo Fighters Hyde Park/Skin and Bones DVD for the rendition of "Shake Your Blood", a song Lemmy recorded with Dave Grohl for the Probot project and album. [6]
  • Dave Grohl is returning the favour by recording a track for Lemmy's solo album (due this year) - Lemmy & Friends? - for this album has also been recorded two tracks each with The Damned, The Reverend Horton Heat, and Skew Siskin. One track with Head Cat (see above), and one with Joan Jett. "So who is Rev Horton Heat?" says Alan, and points the reader to Wikipedia to find out! [6]
  • Darts player, Mervyn King (darts) walked up to the oche at the BDO competition to the latest Triple H entrance theme, "King of Kings". It was covered on BBC2, and he reached the semi-finals. [6]
  • Mikkey Dee quotes [10]:
    • Was not at all happy with the sound quality of the Boneshaker DVD
    • "Phil Taylor was great when he was good... so I could never have filled that space. It's like when you get married and have kids, no one can take my father's place. Of course, some other guy could have taken his place, but he wouldn't have been my father; so I could never be Phil Taylor, so I had to introduce Mikkey Dee into Motörhead."
  • February, 2007: Philthy was featured in Rhythm magazine AND Mikkey Dee was featured in Drummer magazine. [6]
  • The new Motörheadbangers-only Lemmy-designed T-shirt is very good, too. Only 15 inc delivery!

Hawkwind: Do Not Panic TV doc

  • Lemmy commented that the rest of the band were scornful of the type of drug he used. They "only used organic drugs", Lemmy laughed. Nik Turner commented that Lemmy would be awake for a week, then asleep for a week because of the speed. He said it was very hard to relate to someone like that.
  • Lemmy was sacked after he was mugged in America. He was knocked unconscious, his camera stolen, and when he awoke, the other band members had disappeared. Nik Turner later said that they thought he had gone off with some friends. Lemmy hitch-hiked all the way across Michigan state with "hippies and homosexual lorry drivers". Then when he was going across the Canadian border, he was arrested for possession of speed. The Canadian authorities, according to Doug Smith, let him go without charge because it was classified as a "food"! He managed to get to a gig in time, but was sacked by the band at 4am the same day.
