[edit] Optional parameters

I would suggest making parameters 3 (z-level) and 4 (placename) optional. My suggestion for a default z-level is 16, and the default placename should be the article title. A z-level of 16 (as far as the images I've seen to date) is sufficient to distinguish individual buildings the size of a personal residence and will allow viewing of all but the most massive structures in one window; this level is not suitable to geographical features, but is suitable for man-made structures. If I had the knowledge at my fingertips, I would suggest exactly how to make these enhancements ... but I do not. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 22:04, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

I would support such a setting for later, but not immediately, as the zoom level allowed is currently very uneven. Some places have a zoom level of 18. For others, it won't go above 9 or 10 - if that far. More accurate images are being uploaded all the time, but for now, a default setting of 16 simply won't work for all places. But that time is coming - soon. As for optional place names, I support the principle but there are complications, as some article titles are disambiguations, such as Ba (town), Ba Province, Ba District, etc. If these can be overcome, I support the idea wholeheartedly. I've updated the template so that when the 4th parameter is omitted it defaults to the article title or page name. See the example above. -- Zyxw 10:59, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Wikimapia not a Wikimedia project" (Zwiodd edit)

Zwiodd essentially destroyed the template along with the comment "Wikimapia is not a Wikimedia project". If Zwiodd or others are opposed to the template, it should be taken through the deletion process rather than simply broken so that the pages it appears on get damaged in the process. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 12:39, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Zwiodd was correct. The current template gives the impression that Wikimapia is associated with Wikimedia, due to its layout being the same as that of other sister project templates. Instead, its layout should be the one used for frequently referenced external websites, such as Template:Imdb name. I'd be happy to nominate this template for deletion, but we can also just change its layout to the standard form in consensus. I'm sure you agree that it is not helpful to confuse our readers as to whether the are looking at a project of the Wikimedia Foundation, or an external website with entirely different policies.--Eloquence* 21:06, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
I made this template. If it is a problem (and I see that it appears to be) I am happy to see it changed to the one you suggested, Erik. David Cannon 03:43, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Delete it. Because Geohack is linking on Wimapia, thats enough for a foreign project.Kolossos 18:44, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
