[edit] Serkland

It's still just a dictionary definition despite having the tag removed. While I can see the possibility of using this as the start of an article on medieval Norse-Arab interactions, that hypothetical article doesn't exist. Caerwine 06:43, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Serkland is not a word used in the English language and does not belong in a dictionary. It is a name given by medieval Scandinavians to a region in the world, just like Vinland and Gardariki. Why don't you want to move Vinland to wictionary as well?--Wiglaf 07:02, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Vinland isn't a stub, but a full fledged article. Garðaríki is a stub, but it is also more than just a dictionary definition, giving details beyond just "Group A called thing B by name C". If Serkland were like either of those articles, it would belong here, but I am not a fan of dictionary definition stubs which is all it is. Wiktionary is set up to handle languages other than English. To quote from the Wiktionary main page (emphasis added):
"This is the English Wiktionary: it aims to describe all words of all languages, with definitions and descriptions in English only. For example, see frei (a German word). In order to find a German definition of that word, you would visit the equivalent page in the German Wiktionary."
So my reasoning still stands, until such time as the article can be made more than a dictionary definition, I feel Wiktionary is the proper place for it. Caerwine 07:37, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Whichever way you try to turn it, you have a stub that should be expanded and not removed.--Wiglaf 07:39, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Stone of Mora.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Stone of Mora.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --Secretlondon 21:29, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Possible copyvio

Are you sure Image:Young ingjald.JPG and others from that Heimskringla edition are PD? I'm fairly certain they are not. Fornadan (t) 15:35, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Checked in my lexicon: Gerhard Munthe (Image:Ingjald.gif) died in 1929 and Erik Werenskiold (Image:Young ingjald.JPG & Image:Yrsa.jpg) in 1938. Original publication date is 1899. Fornadan (t) 17:10, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for digging up this old discussion again, but it seems like Norwegian copyright expires after 70 years so [:Image:Ingjald.gif]] is PD. This means that all "saga style" drawings from Heimskringla is fair prey except those signed with EW Fornadan (t) 21:49, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Odalism

It might be a bit outside your area of expertise, but if you have the time and energy, could you possibly take a look at Odalism? I was thinking you might at least have heard of it, since it mentions Ásatrú. It seems very uncritical to me, although I'm totally unfamilliar to the subject matter. I came across it when checking the new article Svensk Hednisk Front. / Alarm 18:21, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

Smooch!

Now that the odd business with the Elf article and JMR is long gone, I simple wanted to pass by and drop you a kiss. Have a great weekend! Shauri Yes babe? 02:43, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi Wiglaf! I simply wanted to thank you for your support and kind words to my work on Texas Ranger Division, as well as your intervention to appease AnonMoos in that minor misunderstanding. Not to mention your valuable contributions to the article itself; with your help, and Tony1 and Katefan0's assistence in wording and copyediting, it'll hopefully be up for FAC soon. I'll let you know when that happens ;).
I sincerely admire your knowledege of the English language. Unlike me... when I'm writing, I have the ideas to put together pages and pages, but when as I re-read them, it always feel as I've messed up :(
Someday we'll have to meet and talk about Norse mytholgy. That's such an amazing subject, that I know so little of... would you care to be my teacher? Shauri Yes babe? 00:18, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Old Norse map

Hi Wiglaf. An anonymous user at the Commons requested a change to the license template at Commons:Image:Old norse, ca 900.PNG. I'm pretty sure that was you, but if it wasn't, please let me know!

By the way, do you remember where the blank map of Thuresson's that you started with is?

Also by the way, it would be wonderful if you'd start uploading your pictures directly to the Commons, instead of here. If you have any questions about that, please ask me! Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 20:22, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] PIE

Regarding your request for information on PIE. What was up there previously is 30 years out of date. There is no evidence of riding horses prior to c 2000 BC. There is written evidence of IE c 1650 BC. A series of papers on the transmission of PIE up the gulf were written between 1986 and 2000 examining the statement of Sargon of Akkad that the ships of Meluhha, Makkan and Dilmun docked at the quays of Agade. These looked at trade across the gulf between Abquaiq and Tarut in the eastern region and Tepe Yayah in Iran during the Jemdet Nasr. They examined Brahui and Harrappan inscriptions found in Oman. They looked at trade in carpets, grain, obsidian, cylinder seals, metals and woods. There is a nice body of information on that gulf trade available on line. Rktect 13:02, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your generous offer

Hi dear! I've delayed my reply to to your generous offer of nominating me at RfA on purpose, since it caught me entirely by surprise and I wanted to give a serious thought to the idea. Well, I've decided that I'm not afraid of the responsibility involved, and if you still believe I'm worthy of your lovely gesture, I've decided to accept your beautiful offer. And if anyone is to do it, I'd love that you are the one taking that step, whatever the community consensus may be. Hi there again! I am constantly looking through our photos to see after good pictures, and then look for articles. I'm going to continue doing so! My problem is that I often do not know the English names of especially exotic animals/fish and plants. Like i.e. my picture "Myrull" I've just saved with the latin name that I found in the Norwegian article. Do you have a good idea where I can look this up? Helga76 10:36, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking of IPs

I found this diff on User:Shauri. This is troubling to me. This statement by you does not appear to be in agreement with Wikipedia:Blocking_policy#Vandalism or Wikipedia:Blocking_policy#Bans. Twice now you have indefinitely blocked anon IPs. 202.156.6.59's permanent block was undone by User:Khaosworks a little less than two hours after you made the block. 82.226.64.218's permanent block remains in effect. Failing a justification for overridding policy, I invite you to unblock 82.226.64.218. I'd also like to request you remove the text in the diff mentioned above. Thank you, --Durin 16:09, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

  • I just want to see policy abided by, or if not a strong rationale behind why. Banning is a very serious step, and should not be taken lightly. Blocks should be used as a first step, ban as last...not first. Shauri's user page has been vandalized just five times. That's not much, and certainly not justification for rash actions against anonymous IPs. Further, she's an admin now. She can protect her own userpage if she likes. --Durin 16:49, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
I too found this troublesome. Wiglaf shouldn't be, as I feel, so overprotective of the user Shauri. If she wishes to ask you to block someone, she will ask you. Blocking people indefintely, especially first time offenders, is both violating & stupid. I am backing durin totally on this issue & would also like to request the text removed & ask that you give first a warning, then possibly a 24 hour ban. Then work yourself upwards. Thank you durin for bringing the issue up, as I didn't want to be blocked. Spawn Man 00:37, 9 October 2005 (UTC)P.S. The only reason this message is on there, is because, (not meaning to sound rude), Shauri & Wiglaf have a relationship or "thing" going. [edit] spelling of character names in Beowulf

In response to my comment at the Old Norse spelling imbroglio, you mentioned that you were interested in getting feedback about the spelling in Beowulf (at least I think that's what you meant--sorry if I've misunderstood). Here's my two cents: when my students look at a Wikipedia article, I prefer them to find something consistent with what I'm teaching. In this case, that would clearly be the historical spelling. Including those spellings has the added advantage of making people more familiar with eð and þorn; if there were more of them around, your current renaming predicament (with which I'm very sympathetic) might have been avoided. Do you really think that's a legitimate comment? Or that that somehow isnt attempting to "rub it in"? I also went back and viewed Shauri's RFA - the one you sponsored. [edit] Otto von Bismarck

I wonder, could you please have a look at the page and decide which version is more appropriate? Thank you very, very much in advance. NightBeAsT 21:37, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

http://h-net.org/~german/gtext/kaiserreich/speech.html [The immediate background for this long speech was the brutal expulsions from Prussian territory of Poles and Polish Jews carried out in 1885. Many of these people had been resident in Prussia for years but had not become citizens, no easy matter in Germany. Polish deputies in the Reichstag formally questioned the government on these policies. Bismarck responded by denying the competence of the Reichstag in Prussian state matters. Shortly thereafter a majority of the lower house of the Prussian parliament moved a declaration for the protection of German interests in the eastern provinces. With this friendlier stimulus, Bismarck laid out the principles of the government's Polish policies. A typical Bismarck speech, it was delivered extempore (as were all speeches in the Reichstag and German state parliaments), filled with innuendo and threats and short on specific details. The intention here is to stifle criticism of an increasingly rigorous anti-Polish government policy, justifying it as an entirely reasonable response to Polish provocation. All the good will comes from the German side; all the bad faith belongs to the Poles. Source: Eugen Kalkschmidt (ed.), Bismarcks Reden (Berlin, n.d.), pp. 173-86. Translated by Richard S. Levy.]

And another source : http://raven.cc.ku.edu/~eceurope/hist557/lect6.htm Intensive germanisation began after the establishment of the German Empire (Jan. 1871), with Bismarck's "Kulturkampf" (Cultural War) against the Catholic Church in the Empire, because the Catholic Center Party opposed many of his measures. At the same time, he believed that the Polish upper class (nobles) and the Catholic Church in Prussian Poland would always be anti-German, so he set out to limit the power of the church and germanise the schools. German lay teachers replaced Polish priests in the schools, and German became the language of instruction except for religion. The church was persecuted for refusing to comply with the government regulation that all priests have a high school certificate (roughly equivalent to a B.A. or B.S. today). This requirement was opposed by the church all over the Empire as an infringement on its independence from the state. However, it had special meaning in Poland, where catholicism was part of national identity. Polish priests went into hiding, so many Poles could only hear mass said by Polish priests in secrecy. Therefore, this regulation aroused great anger, strengthening Polish national consciousness vis-a-vis the Germans. --Molobo 21:41, 25 October 2005 (UTC) So far NB you didn't say why do you believe Bismarck didn't try to destroy Polish identity.Agains all scholary works and history on the subject, as I believe.NB-Wiki isn't original research. And frankly you would have hard time trying to argue that Bismarck didn't persecute Polish minority... --Molobo 21:41, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Do we really want this?!

My dear friend and fellow Wikipedian,

A proposal has been made here which could effect the way all featured articles, and perhaps even eventually all articles, are handled in the future. While it has the well-meaning intention of addressing some real problems, if it is adapted, I fear it will actually create more problems and possibly destroy the wonderfully open and collaborative nature of the Wikipedia we all so love.

I therefore, strongly urge you to join us who OPPOSE this potentially dangerous proposal. Thank you for your time, thoughts and words.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:05, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Could you point me to those edits 'lacking civility'? The last time I checked the Wikipedia:Blocking policy, I saw no rule allowing blocking for that (as much as it might have been in order). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 05:17, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Civility#Management_of_incivility_during_the_mediation_process does not mention ban as a way to solve the problem. If Molobo is being uncivil, there are other ways to deal with him, described at Wikipedia:Resolving disputes, which you (or affected users) may want to pursue. Sorry to be a sticker to the rules, but when we break the blocking policy, even with good intentions, where do we stop? Blocking is the last resort, not the first. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 05:23, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
I meant block, sorry for confusing you with 'ban'. I reviewed the (single) edit you pointed me to and I don't find it offensive. It may not be the most constructive, but certainly it is no reason for a block. Please refrain from using blocking in such cases - our blocking policy does not support blocking for discussing (!), try talking instead. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 05:32, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Be it as it may, it is not a valid reason for a block. Otherwise we could just as well block each other over this disagreement. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 06:55, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
