Why We Thugs is the first official single on Ice Cube's seventh album Laugh Now, Cry Later. It was released in 2006 and the music video has a cameo appearance by comedian Mike Epps. In the song, Ice Cube mentions: George W. Bush, Saddam Hussein, Russell Simmons and The Sugarhill Gang. In the censored version, all the lines of the chorus has a word which is censored, especially the first line, when he says "They give us guns and drugs", which guns and drugs is censored. The others are "slugs" and "fuck", which he says in two lines of the chorus. A remix was also done by underground producer Mista KiLLa Cali with legendary rappers Eazy E & Tupac Shakur, which was renamed to Real Thugs.

There are several neighborhoods in the outer parts of the cities Los Angeles, Houston, and New York, which are displayed in the video. This is to serve the purpose that "every hood is the same," according to Ice Cube's lyrics. Around one minute and forty-five seconds a man with grillz appears. He was identified as Johnny Dang, a well known Houston jewler. This was a big controversy on youtube.com

The plot features Ice Cube and Mike Epps breaking the law and going to jail by the video's end.
