"Why" is the lead single from Gabrielle's fifth studio album, Always [1]. It was released on 17 September 2007 as a digital download and one week later (24 September 2007) on CD single. The single was first played on BBC Radio 2 by Ken Bruce and has since been added to the Radio 2 B-list. The single charted at number forty-two on the UK Singles Chart, her second consecutive single to miss the top forty.

"Why" was one of the final songs recorded for Always and was produced by The Boilerhouse Boys. The song was written around a sample of the Paul Weller song "Wild Wood", which reached number fourteen on the UK singles chart. Weller enjoyed Gabrielle's interpretation of the song so much, he recorded new vocals for the track following Gabrielle's recording of the original demo version of "Why" [2].
