"Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is a song written by the English folk-rock singer and songwriter Sandy Denny. The song was originally recorded by Denny privately in 1967, and again during her time with Strawbs. It is best known in the version sung by Denny on the Fairport Convention album Unhalfbricking.
Cover versions have been recorded by, among others: Mary Black, Eva Cassidy, Judy Collins, Lonnie Donegan, Nanci Griffith, Susanna Hoffs, Deanna Kirk, Charlie Louvin, Cat Power, Nina Simone, Matthew Sweet, Kate Wolf, and Kate Rusby (2008).
The Judy Collins version is the title track of her 1968 album (see: Who Knows Where the Time Goes (Judy Collins album)), although an earlier version had appeared as the B-side of "Both Sides Now" (1968). Both of these appeared prior to the Fairport Convention recording.
A cover sung by Nina Simone (from her 1970 live album Black Gold) is used in the film The Dancer Upstairs and a Judy Collins version of this song can be heard in the film A Walk on the Moon.
The Fairport Convention recording won the Audience Vote - Best Folk Track Award at the 2007 BBC Radio 2 folk awards in February.
In late June 2008 Fairport Convention are releasing a download single version of "Who Knows", with Chris and Kelly While.
