Whitsunday Regional Council

Whitsunday Regional Council is a proposed Local Government Area in Queensland, Australia. The Local Government Area will be created in March 2008 as a result of the report of the Local Government Reform Commission released in July 2007. The new Council, located in North Queensland, will contain the entire area of two existing Local Government Areas;

The report recommends that the new Local Government Area should not be divided into wards and elect eight councillors and a mayor. The Whitsunday Regional Council will cover an area of 23,856 square kilometres (9,211 sq mi), contain an estimated resident population in 2006 of 30,719 and have an estimated operating budget of AUD48.8m.

The Regional Council will cover the towns of Airlie Beach, Bowen, Cannonvale, Collinsville, Gumlu, Inveroona, Merinda, Proserpine, Scottville and Shute Harbour as well as the islands of the Whitsundays, including the resort islands of Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and Daydream Island.
