Whitney R. Cross is the author of The Burned Over District: The Social and Intellectual History of Enthusiastic Religion in Western New York, 1800-1850, published in 1950.
This book explores the New York area west of the Catskills, which served as a center for revivalist movements during the Jacksonian Era. The term "burned-over district" refers to the many revivalist fires that raged during the Second Great Awakening of the 1830s and 1840s.
