[edit] Athletics

The school's athletic teams are known as the Panthers with jersey colors maize and blue. The Panthers played in the Great Lakes League (GLL) until 2003 when they joined the Toledo City League. Prior to being part of the GLL, Whitmer was an independent during the early 1970s. However, Whitmer had been playing many City League teams in all sports for years prior to this joining. Their rival is the Start Spartans, they meet annually for the Battle of Tremainsville Road. During the GLL days, the Bedford Mules of Temperance Michigan were another big rival of Whitmer. It is said that the addition of Clay and Whitmer to the City League would bring about a new Red and Blue Division like the glory years of City League athletics. However, no modifications have been made yet to the league structure.

There are sometimes complaints that Whitmer places more value on its athletics than academic subjects, however Whitmer ranks higher in academics than any Toledo Public School.[citation needed] The school is a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and its football team has qualified for the state playoffs for four of the last five years. The 1986 team went undefeated and 1987 and 1988 made it to the state semi-finals in Football. The late 80's were the best teams Whitmer ever put on the field. The 2007-2008 panthers made an unexpected run to the state final four in basketball. yo yo
