Whitleigh

Whitleigh is an area and Ward of the city of Plymouth in the English county of Devon. It shares district borders with Southway, Honicknowle, Crownhill, West Park and St Budeaux.

The population of Whitleigh as per the 2001 census was 7,165, of which 48.2% were male and 51.8% were female.

Whitleigh has several educational institutions.

St. Peter's Roman Catholic School, Whitleigh Community Primary School, Woodfield primary school, and Woodland school.

[edit] Secondary schools

Sir John Hunt Sports College (formerly Community College), which recently merged with Southway Community College due to budget cuts from the local government. There are now two campus' and a joint faculty. Administration is carried out at the primary site (the Whitleigh campus), where the principle's office is located.

This institution was previously known as Whitleigh comprehensive (or High) school.

Whitleigh also houses the Woodside education centre. This institute is aimed at children with learning or serious physical disabilities. Children are accepted from 4-16 years old.

[edit] Whitleigh Learning Campus

The building of the new Whitleigh Learning Campus is currently taking place, and will be hopefully finished by 2008. Building work is taking place on the site of Whitleigh Community Primary School, and is the site contractors is Interserve. The Plymouth City Council's aim is to bring, Whitleigh Primary, Sir John Hunt and Woodlands Community Special school together to make one big campus. Currently the head of campus is John Butcher former headmaster of Whitleigh Primary.

Whitleigh Green is the predominant shopping precinct, which hosts a small supermarket, take away, Cafe, discount store, green grocer, newsagents, Post Office, off licence and pharmacy. There is also a large area of grass and trees (perhaps lending to the name). Recycling facilities are available in the car park area.

This particularly pious suburb has a nice modern church. It's called the Bethany Evangelical Church. Other than that, it is Multi-Cultural.
