Whitefish River Valley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Whitefish River Valley is located in the Thunder Bay District, Ontario and is named for the Whitefish River that flows through it. The valley is home to several villages and hamlets that grew up along the Port Arthur, Duluth and Western Railway line in the early 20th century[1]. It also is home to Whitefish Valley Public School[2].
[edit] Communities in the valley
Communities in the valley include Flint, Harstone, Hillside, Hymers, Leeper, Nolalu, Sellers, and Silver Mountain.
Hillside is a hamlet 4 km west of Nolalu, Ontario.[3] It was settled by homesteaders from Finland in the early 1900's. There were many small dairy farms and fields in Hillside until the 1950's. Hillside also had its own train platform along the Port Arthur, Duluth and Western Railway, as well as its own school built in 1914.
